  • As a GI doctor, I think Will Smith did an amazing thing by vlogging his colonoscopy! I watched it for the first time and reacted to it here! A great learning opportunity and I'm grateful he's spreading awareness about colon cancer prevention to millions

    Isn't it wonderful when celebrities actually promote health and wellness properly for a change? It's like a breath of fresh air!!!!

      Doctor Dan absolutely! But there are some discrepancies in what’s actually recommended by some guidelines and what was promoted in his vlog! So always important to take that into consideration!

    Just a note: colonoscopy is not the only form of colon cancer screening, BUT it’s the best at detecting EARLY lesions and the ONLY method that allows for removal of polyps at the same time! 🙏

    This is by far one of the best done and entertaining "I'm gonna get scoped!" vlogs I've seen.
    I really liked your review as well...It's also nice to see you back in the saddle again.
    My colon decided it wanted to have a polyp garden,so from 2016 to August 2019 I've had 4 unsedated colonoscopies, three water,one gas.
    I'm one of those people who enjoys watching and talking with my Dr. during them. Do you ever give unsedated colonoscopies?

    • @AustinChiangMD
      @AustinChiangMD  4 роки тому

      Daci Sky oh my a polyp garden! we do not do unsedated in general unless there’s a contraindication to anesthesia.

    • @dacisky
      @dacisky 4 роки тому +1

      @@AustinChiangMD There wasn't,that was my choice for all of them. In fact,for the 4th. one,I had a EGD/colonoscopy and arranged with the anesthetist for me to be awake for the colonoscopy,so I woke up from the EGD with my glasses on starting at my colon on the monitor. :) It was so cool!

      @@AustinChiangMD Sad to say,most people I've talked to do not want to see that! The nurse who assisted was so impressed,she said when it's time for her to have one,she's doing it unsedated. :) A convert!

    Let me just register my envy of people getting their 1st colonoscopy at 50 when I am preparing for my 3rd and I'm in my 30s. And my hospital still uses the 4L PEG prep. Shout out to my GI tract of mysteries.

    • @AustinChiangMD

      pygmywombat Wow. Thanks for sharing. Various conditions require earlier screening/surveillance and other symptoms may prompt colonoscopy as well!

    In the video, you refer to the appendix as something that "really serves no purpose". I was under the impression that the purpose of the appendix HAS been determined (albeit not until around 2007). That it is comprised almost entirely of immune tissue and serves as a storehouse for good bacteria, allowing the gut to replenish itself if it is flushed out by a particularly bad bout of diarrhea, for example.
    Thank you for your highly entertaining & informative video, please make more!

    I'm a 41 year old woman with a diagnosis of diverticula and have two bouts of diverticulitis and I also have ibs symptoms I think. So I'm curious if 50 is still the age for a colonoscopy? I have gas and bloating often and other issues in my intestines so I'm wondering. Pain in the stomach is common for me

    Hey Doc! Like Will, I had my age 50 scope last Dec. They found 3 precancerous adenomas. They recommended that I come back in 3 years. Would i be obsessing if I try and get scheduled at the 2 year mark? They didn't say that they were huge or anything. The quantity and being precancerous does concern me.
    Thanks

    If a blind person work to get a colonoscopy, how would they know when their stool is clear enough if they live independently? Would they like have to FaceTime somebody?

    Had one of these today and it wassn't fun. Ide recommend anyone getting this to get knocked out completely. The drug they used propofol i think its called waasnt powerful enough and they gave me the highest dose they could without needing an anestioliogist. Im a big guy (280 lbs) who loves to drink so the drugs did nothing and i was totally aware and could feel everything. I was chatting with the staff the whole time and they seemed kinda amazed that i was still functioning and unfazed by all the drugs the injected me with. pain was at least an 8 maybe 9 out of 10 in some parts of the procedure. But result came back great doc said im totally healthy so its worth it. Ide just get put out next time lol i dont want to discourage anyone from gettin one done. Does it suck? Yes. But cancer sucks alot more and most people will have a far better expierence then i did.

    I wish this video had at least 10% of the views Will Smith's video garnered. Less than 10,000 views after 3 years (only 9,409 views as of October 6, 2022!)? While Will Smith's video numbered in the millions? I really enjoyed the information you provided in addition to the real life experience video posted by Will Smith.
