    I hate the word drone, frigging media have turned it into a dirty word. when I'm flying I always say to the public it's an rc model aircraft or helicopter multi rotor. lol its amazing how that seems to De escalate the negative attention.

    • @NightRunner417
      @NightRunner417 6 років тому +8

      Absolutely agree. I refused to call my aircraft "drones" for the longest time, till I realized that the only word people understand now is "drone" when referring to an RC aircraft. So, I do dislike the word, but I dislike infinitely greater how anything RC that flies is looked at as somehow vile and awful. I want my hobby back, I want people to understand how beautiful and amazing it is to fly these things.

      I agree...though it definitely sucked being around the ‘real’ drones when they were working. They may have been our side but you still had this terrible sense of unease when a drone rocked up and you could hear it but not see it. And then BOOM. From out of the blue. It was terrifying at night and that’s not even being the target...

      Yep. I was in a park the other day and someone asked, dirty like "is that a DRONE??" and I said "well, its a quad copter" and they went "oh, OK. Wow that thing is neat!" It's so strange how hot button words change people's attitudes....same device.....but different word for it evokes different feelings.

    I think it's for fun but its also for a unique cinematic aspect as well. Have you ever watched glider footage, the beautiful arcing turns over places like the Grand Canyon or Hawaiian cliffs? I think that's what fixed wing mode brings to the table.

    • @NightRunner417
      @NightRunner417 6 років тому

      I get that sentiment but... watching that footage, something about it doesn't feel right. It looks like an arcade jet fighter game, too snappy back to level or something. I've flown so much fixed wing FPV that it's just in my gut now.... That mode on the Mav is just... not graceful. That's the beauty of fixed wings - that dreamy, glidey, "I'm a bird of prey" feel. Whatever, I mean this is the modern age and all. I just think that if all I'd ever known was quads and this "fixed wing mode" thing, I'd have missed out on something really special.

      I learned on fixed wings and I have way more experience with them than I do on quads... but... I have to say... quads with minimal babysitting are enormous fun to fly. There's this whole feel to them like the difference between say a regular race car and a drift racer... It's hilarious fun to knock the ass end out and snap into an orbit around an object or into a tight curve. Good fixed wings miss out on that because they are so locked into their path. Both are fantastic fun in FPV, especially in goggles, just very different in flying style. I'll always do both.

    It was nice to see you out and about again with the Magic. This fixed-wing mode definitely seems like something for folks who want to experience an R/C plane or have had one in the past. I also agree that this is most certainly for fun and not for shooting video. Unless that video is supposed to mimic video from a plane.

  • @michaelkaplan604

    Thank you very much! I was setting it in GPS mode first getting up to 14.5 mph. And then switching it to sport mode.
    Now I see, if you switch it to sport mode first then bring up to max speed (40 mph) and then press the C1 key that will allow you to cruise at maximum speed. Thank you again.

    From what I see in your video, fixed wing refers to a "fixed wing simulation" meaning that instead of flying a drone you are flying an airplane (fixed wing). Going down and up is like a nose-dip and nose-rise and banking when you turn
    In fact it's pretty cool , it's like a plane cockpit view

    With how easy these drones are to fly and the fact that they basically are self-correcting having fixed Wing mode might be a good training tool for learning to fly regular RC planes.

    In a real plane (fixed wing) the left stick would be throttle and rudder (yaw) and the right would be left/right and up/down. Can you yaw (craw sideways) like a fixed wing?

    • @aholatom
      @aholatom 7 років тому +2

      In a real plane there is only one stick, pedals and throttle lever. :) But yes, a RC plane controller in Mode 2, which I use, the sticks are as you explain. But with the Mavic you can set other stick modes, and custom too. I wonder if Ed uses mode 1 as the sticks are swapped.

    Thanks (as usual) for the very instructive video! I do wish the controls were configurable so you could make the drone nose down when pushing the stick forward and nose up when pulling back (that's how most RC planes work). Also would prefer to swap the sticks...

    Thanks for the comprehensive review. From a DP perspective though, I think you're overlooking some of the options for getting good shots in this mode. The descending zoom you get from pitching the craft forward is a really cool look and pretty dramatic if you had a stationary subject. Also, as someone else mentioned, there could be projects where you do want that slight left-right pitch to give more of a sense of flying. I think of the Star wars chase scenes from either ROTJ on those speeders. Obviously nothing extreme where you're holding the pitch too long or off center, but a slight back and forth as it goes around obstacles would be cool. Just my 2 cents.

    • @EdRickerVlogs
      @EdRickerVlogs  7 років тому

      Hi Carlos, I think you're totally right! Only issue I found was that the movement of the drone was very sensitive and jerky, so a very smooth or controlled and planned motion in Fixed Wing mode would be rather difficult to achieve. But I'm sure with practice you could do it. Thanks for watching!

    Heyas Ed! I just updated to the latest firmware yesterday, so other than a quick little test flight, fixed wing seems to act kinda like "FPV Mode" in the camera settings. Only difference is you do not have to maintain a specific speed and with the camera in fpv mode you still have full default controls of the craft. I find fixed wing mode a little odd unless they plan on incorporating the FPV goggles soon.
    However prior to the fixed wing update I have been using litchi and my VR goggles to fly my Mavic in FPV mode anyway..It does look exactly like "Fixed Wing"
    On another note.... As always your footage from the Mavic looks stellar even when you are not even showcasing the footage, dang how do you do it! Looks like you have been doing awesome with your channel!

    I've been looking for a way to attach a good 3-axis gimbal to an electric glider or fixed wing RC aircraft to provide stable, high quality FPV video. I just haven't found a gimbal that will attach easily. It appears DJI just provided the perfect solution with a software/firmware upgrade for the Mavic. Fixed Wing Mode is for the stabilized HD and UHD footage we can't currently get from a racing drone. We are going to start seeing some amazing footage from low level flying with the Mavic. A higher altitude test like yours would not yield the kind of result this feature is meant for. Do you know if the Fixed Wing Mode is available for the P4 and the P4P?

    Ed.. Great video as your others. Quick question...if I have my C1 & C2 buttons programmed to other uses and I'm flying in "fixed wing mode" does the C1 & C2 buttons automatically switch to on/off in fixed wing mode? When I start flying my GREAT Mavic again will the C1 &C2 buttons revert to my original settings? Keep up the good work on your videos.

  • @sanatkumarasharma3627

    Hello Ed, I'm not into drone flying (yet!) but I did notice something and I'm not sure it has been commented: on your first test you were flying at about > 20mph while on your last segment using again the C1 the notice panel was at 19mph. Since you can activate this mode only when flying forward I suspect the fixed wing mode will lock your speed to the the current one. To check this out you may fly normally at maximum forward speed and then switch on the C1: I believe it will maintain that speed. Maybe it's worth a try... ;)
    Cheers

    I see lots of photographic benefits because I have often tried to mimic fix wing style photography w/o the use of fixed wing mode and it takes very careful and skilled use of the joy sticks. Also, isnt it true that the horizon is always level in normal flight mode? The gimbal always tries to hide attitude changes in the drone. Fixed wing mode is the only way to dispense with that aspect of normal gimbal operation. So I see FWM as a useful tool, not just a toy or gaming mode.

    • @EdRickerVlogs
      @EdRickerVlogs  7 років тому +1

      Hey Edixon, customizing C1 and C2 doesn't matter. When you turn Fixed Wing Mode on, they automatically map to turning on and off the mode and cannot be reassigned to anything else while the mode is active. Not sure about RTH, but I do know that the process of RTH stops the craft to orient itself.That would deactivate the Fixed Wing mode anyway.

    Fixed wing is a term for AIRPLANES. Rotary is a helicopter. This is simulating a fixed wing aircraft flying through the air. I love it as I am a traditional RC pilot getting in to copters.

    Seems like you missed the whole point. Getting footage like what you would get flying a fixed wing plane gives you an awesome point of view. I can see all kinds of applications for this.

    Is there any way to control pitch with the right stick forward and back? This is like mode 2 in RC. Pitch on the left stick is like the much hated (by me) mode 1.

    • @EdRickerVlogs
      @EdRickerVlogs  7 років тому

      Yes you can switch the Modes. The GO App has the ability to switch to Mode 1.

    Thanks for showing us. Seems great fun. DJI needs to put some more work to the gimbal movement in this mode.

    Interesting. I can see some use if you're looking to create that "real flying" feel in your footage whether a dream scene or re-creating a aircraft flight scene. I like it, well for the "right" feel.

      I was using Filmic color profile in the DJI GO App, but I was also using the PolarPro ND/PL filter.

    You cannot slow down in fixed wing mode. Doing so with the right stick disables the fixed wing mode. You can speed up, but not slow down with the right stick and stay in fixed wing mode. It's described in the manual.

    which iPad is that? how does it compare to your HTC regarding visibility and glitchiness?

    • @EdRickerVlogs
      @EdRickerVlogs  7 років тому

      I use the iPad Mini 4. My HTC 626 Desire is an absolutely POS in comparison...like, there really is no comparison lol. iPad Mini 4 is a rocket engine compared to the HTC tricycle.

    Hi Ed. is it better for you to use the iPad holder instead of using it attached to the controller? thanks!

    • @EdRickerVlogs
      @EdRickerVlogs  7 років тому +5

      Hey Pablo, sometimes it is. I actually found that inserting the iPad into the controller arms was slowly damaging the screen protector on the iPad and scuffing things up, plus Sport Mode was difficult to activate. Using the tablet holder is much better in those respects, but it's also another thing to carry and doesn't really fit that well into the Fly More Combo bag. Of course if you're using an iPad, you're probably using a larger bag anyway to carry it along with the Mavic, so perhaps that's not a big deal.

    Sounds like more of a racing drone mode maybe? Probably for the up coming google release. It seems more like s "video game" version of a fixed wing RC airplane. I get that. Franny Oh, thanks for the review! f

    Had my magic a month and a half . Every time I want to fly it has a firm ware update that takes a half hour . Is this going to happen all the time ?

    • @EdRickerVlogs

      It shouldn't happen every time, no. But sometimes there are multiple firmware updates or new firmware releases back to back. Just make sure it goes through its full update process and you should be ok!

  • @Bill14886

    I can relate to how it handles just by watching your video and knowing how R/C planes fly with my many years of experience . Im sure I'll be trying that mode out and enjoying how it handles when I buy mine. I bet you can even crab crawl it if youd like, mixing both cyclics {sticks} can really add a true Plane like feel. Pulling back on the Right stick will just level you out by the looks of it with out worring about stalling . but still Im sure many of us will enjoy this mode even when recording to give viewers a cool effect when flying under and through things. very cool.
