- Fertilizer Supplements: Is Epsom Salt Good for Orchids?
Epsom salt is extremely beneficial for your orchid’s maintenance and nutrition. Not only does it help with the production of chlorophyll, but it also aids in cell construction, proper hydration, and flushes out the orchid from salt residue. Epsom Salt will make the blooms larger and the leaves more vivid, causing no harm to your orchid.
Orchid fertilization is not a complicated subject, and the more you immerse yourself in the different possibilities, the more fascinating it gets. Well, at least for me…I once thought that fertilizing with a balanced fertilizer, 20-20-20 year-round was sufficient. Then I read about not using an orchid fertilizer with urea nitrogen in it. Then the question came up about using Epsom Salt for fertilization.
With the use of Epsom salt, there have been many questions about its use and exactly what it does.

I also use tap water but I always leave mine out for 24-48 hours so that most of the chlorine evaporates! I have several plants such as Spider plants, Orchids and Palms that hate chlorine and my plants have been doing great since doing this!❤️🥰

Epsom salts, great pH down for soil/growing medium and water. I use along side vinegar and gypsum for great pH down combo. Dilute into 1quart water a table spoon vinegar, 1/8 cup Epsom and 1/4 -1/2cup of gypsum for adjusting a few plants quickly

I have used Epsom Salts to fertilise my other plants (mostly houseplants, ferns, cacti, succulents, etc) - the times I have used it - BOOM!! Stand Back!! They've done so well! @@nicolemiller7022 My rain water comes down directly from my roof (the side which has no guttering), as well as overflow from really heavy rains from where there is guttering. I have two 5 gallon buckets to collect the rain water, and also a 2 gallon watering can. No special "contraption"! Of course, the buckets need to have a cover (to prevent mosquitoes from breeding), but I use the water from the watering can first. I hope my explanation helps.

I have 1 phalaenopsis that had leaves turn yellowish, the beautiful spike full of blossoms went limp and the plant looks like it is dying. I’m seeking help to know what went wrong. I start with Epsom salt soaks right about March. As I grow in leca, I dont want it in my reservoir too long, but I soak them and then flush the pot out. I dont do any Epsom salt supplementation during the winter

Hi Michele, I don't usually go by measurements because everyone's potting medium and water is different. I usually use a teaspoon for every 2 gallons, so I'd add a little more for 3 gallons, around 1.5 teaspoons. I pour it on the roots and over the potting medium, too. I use a lot of sphagnum moss that absorbs more elements than just bark would, so if your media is not one that absorbs a lot, you might want to use more.
Hi Amanda. I'm a newbie with Orchids since 2019, so do not have a good idea what I'm doing. I've seen some interesting videos on the use of MSG, MonoSodium Glutamate. I've got hold of some and used it as a mist spray on my orchids. I'd like to hear your take on it. Here in South Africa, Pretoria, it is summer and growing season, so I cannot really say that the sudden new air root development I see is because of that, but it does seem like my random lot of orchids do look more lively and happy. Even some Cattleyas that I have given up on suddenly develop roots and new growth. I did replant them and just placed them on top of some rock chips with a bit of bark mixed in, and placed some sphagnum moss soaked in a 4 teaspoon to a gallon mix of MSG next to them. They had NO roots, and it seems like they may just be saved. I kept the moss damp with water alone, and once a week some MSG water. I've stopped the MSG now and just observe. My plants are watered with bore hole (well) water (Ph7) with a auto sprayer system. Our environment is high temperature, up to 36 deg C (97 F) and higher and low humidity Winter just above 0 deg C(32 F) I do then use frost netting to protect against wind in winter. Because of the non tap water , my fertilizing regime is basically something like, "when I feel like it, get a chance or remember". Obviously some types of Orchids will do better than others...... but some do better than what experts expect, and then the "easy growers" for beginners just don't make it with me. I'm NOT friends with Phalaenopsis, they hate me.

I like watching your instructional video due to it being short but providing scientific information that i need for my orchid care. I soak my orchid pot medium once every 6 weeks with a solution [1TBS of Epsom salt + 1/2 TSP of NPK (19-8-16)/gallon tap water] (Otherwise, I soak tap water once a week due to well-draining medium pots). I have monitored and noticed green and healthy leaves along with a few yellow old ones at the orchid trunk bottom now and then. I wonder if this soaking is too much or adequate or else? If one plant had fungus and bacteria in it and the water absorbs that then you soak a healthy plant in the same water, you are likely spreading disease.

Hi again Amanda. I enjoyed this one and found it useful. I tried a flush with Epsom a couple of months ago. I've since had a problem with some of them developing what looked like chlorosis to me, yellowing leaves, spots and cicles and some leaves falling off. It has happened on several different types of orchids, particularly Den Phals. Perhaps it's just the time of season where old leaves are dying but it put me off using it. The tds value was about 150ppm, was that too strong? Perhaps I should try again or even foliar feed with it? If I do foliar feed what dilution is best please? Do you think it might have reacted badly with other feed which would have been given a week previously?
Hi Carole, Thanks for the comment. The tds at 150 shouldn't have been the problem since most orchids do well with up to 175. The reaction they had seems like a very typical one to overfertilizing. Depending on what you already use as fertilizer, you may not need to add any Epsom Salt whatsoever. If you decide to go ahead and use it as a foliar feed, you can use the same concentration as a soak, which would be a teaspoon per gallon. Except since they reacted like this even to the soak, I wouldn't attempt the foliar feed. It seems like they have what they need already with your fertilization regime.

Shes a Phragmipedium memoria Estelle getty (longifolium fma album x fischerii). She usually only gives me one bloom, but recently the second will form right before the older one drops. So for a few days only, I have 2 blooms. Then I whip out my camera... LOL

Hi I'm on my 3rd phalaenopsis. I bought my first used that fertalize with two measurements by miracle grow no flowers since had to remove bad roots dropped three leaves one is now growing at the top. Very upset. 2nd was given had black spots all over it I got rid of that but it died. Now my fiance bought me a big one from target in a week my flowers are drooping. That I attributed to heat. It was nice out than got really cold out so I had to change my heat to hotter and it's dry in here. So I realized that gallon of water And bought the spray I sprayed under and on the tops of leaves I see signs of rot on my first leaves not drooping anymore. I'm so frustrated so I'm learning now what to do bc I'm usually a saver of plants I have tons in my garden and I bring my tropicals in bc I'm in CT. Humidity is best in June to Sept here. Help lol I am so worried! I am going to be composting and I bought one that allows the tea to pour out so I'm hoping to help boost all of my plants. Can I get some advice on the best orchid mix for the pots the best fertalize method and how to correctly care for them. I'm sorry to be a pain. I'm not into killing plants though. Hi Rozanne, I would just stay with the roots. Even though orchids absorb water and nutirents through their leaves, for the most part, the leaves are hydrorepellent. Water will trickle down the leaf and not have any effect at all. Some might get absorbed, but through the roots are the best method.
How about just giving it orchid fertilizer??

I have used --- no more to 1/ month with distilled H20. Check PH -6.0
Giving approximate amounts of supplements would be helpful, ie, tsp per amount of water.
How much Epsom salt in how much water?
Epsom Salt is magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) - the 4 should actually be a subscript meaning that there are 4 oxygens to every 1 magnesium and 1 sulfur. There is NO iron or calcium in epsom salt.

I would use orchid fertilizer! Michigan State University orchid fertilizer. MSU fertilizer you can find it under any brand

Hi Muhhamed, Epsom salt does not contain any calcium or iron. It is magnesium sulfate (MgSO4), which is magnesium and sulfur. Orchids will need extra calcium and iron, so be sure to fertilize with a fertilizer that contains both those, along with Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium. I am not sure about the grams per liter, so I had to do some math. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I use 1 tablespoon per gallon, which is 4 L. 1 Tablespoon has around 14 grams, so 14/4? Is that right? It's not much at all. Start with a little and gradually add more with time.

To answer you, I'd have to know the exact NPK ratio and what else is in your fertilizer. Some fertilizers do a great job at including all the extra micro-nutrients, but others only have the main three: Nitrogen, Potassium, and Phosphorous. In that case, you'd have to supplement the feeding with another type of fertilizer to make sure that the orchid is receiving all the other nutrients: calcium, magnesium, boron, sulfur, and so many more.
In that case, I'd listen to the other growers around your area because they'll have a better idea. Since they add it, I would too. :)

Hi Yulia, Whatever you do, don't add 2 fertilizer supplement together in the same watering day. Since you added eggshells, I'd wait 2 weeks and then use Epsom Salt. It won't hurt if you water with Epsom salt earlier, as in 1 week, since the eggshells will remain in the pot a long time. They will eventually react with each other, but if you can give them the 2 weeks, it's better.

How to bring down ph from 8.8 to 5.5?
Hi Satya, I'm not the best person to answer this since my background isn't chemistry, but it's almost impossible to bring it down that much without tons of interventions. That's a lot of chemical treatment, and that's bad for the orchids. Maybe someone else could answer you better.

What’s a good PH in tap water for orchids?
Anywhere from 5.5 to 6.5 for Phalaenopsis. You can use water up to 7 but that's the upper limit

I didn't give an exact amount because that will depend on a lot of things, like the size of your pot, the potting media, etc. I usually do 1 teaspoon per gallon for mine, but test yours out with a little less and work up from there depending on the orchid's reaction.

Hi Paula, I didn't mention the quantities because that will depend on a lot of factors. You can start out with a teaspoon per gallon and work up (or down) from there depending on how your orchid reacts.
Does the addition of epsom salt increase or decrease the pH of the orchid fertilizer.
Hi Robert, Excellent question. When I made this video I stated that it decreased the pH, making the potting medium more acidic. Since then, which hasn't been that long ago, I've read a couple articles saying that has been disproven. I'm still checking into that answer and the validityof the authors who wrote it, so for now, I still stand by my answer. If I read some more and get a convincing article or proof that this is in fact a myth, I will go back and change my answer.
Oh, and one more thing... Use Espom salt by itself, on a non-fertilizing day. Some fertilizers interact badly with Epsom Salt and the outcome isn't as good as expected.

Hi Rhonda, I mix one teaspoon in for a gallon of water, and adjust from there. It will depend a lot on your potting medium. If you use sphagnum moss you might use less, if you have bark, you might want to add more.

how would you use Epsom salt on semi water culture orchids ?
Hi Josh, For semi water culture, you don't want to let the orchid sit in the water that has the Epsom Salt (or any other fertilizer) for a long period of time. So the idea is to use epsom salt, let it soak for 20-30 min then change the water to distilled, rain, RO, or any other water source that doesn't have minerals. That way the orchid can still hydrate but without the risk of overfertilizing.

I didn't include a fixed amount of Epsom Salt because this will depend a lot on your type of potting media, how big your orchid pot is, how often you water and a whole bunch of other stuff. So I didn't add that part. You can start with 1 to 2 teaspoons per gallon of water and move up from there (if your orchid reacts well).

Hi Willem, You need to find a product that has calcium carbonate that is plant soluble. Some products that say they have calcium can't be absorbed by the roots.

Hi Chad, I have never used lavender epsom salt, so I don't know how to answer your question honestly. My guess would be that it wouldn't be good just because of the other ingredients in the mix that may (or may not) be harmful to the orchid's roots. Again, this is my guess. Maybe someone else can chime in and leave an answer. If you can, try to use the regular epsom salt.

Hi , I’m sorry it took so long for me to write you back about your comment. I was on vacation and didn’t log onto my UA-cam. Thanks for commenting on my video. I appreciate it and was glad it helped. About Epsom salt, I didn’t include the measurements because that will depend on a lot of different factors. For example, how much water you use, what kind of potting media your orchid is in, how fast your media dries out, how big of a pot your orchid is in…and so on. There isn’t one easy answer for measurements, so that’s why I left them out of the video. To start off, you can use one tablespoon per gallon (4L) of water. If you have orchids that are sensitive to minerals, then start with a teaspoon. That is usually too little, and I must use more in time. From this starting point, if your orchid adjusts well and the leaves don’t turn yellow or have brown tips, then use a little more.

Hi Donna, Thanks for asking. I mix mine with 1 tablespoon to a gallon of distilled water. Some articles say to use 2 tablespoons, but everytime I've done that, the results weren't so great.

Hi Anna, Is it mulch that you're asking about? Unfortunately its not the same as orchid bark because mulch is manufactured to degrade in 6 months. Bark has to stay firm for over 2 years. There are also other materials used in mulch that do not help the orchid, such as chemical weed killer.
Oh wait... Sorry, I answered the wrong question. The video today was about orchid bark and I just noticed that you asked this about epsom salt. But yes, you can use the garden kind. It should have the same magnesium content in it that the orchid needs, but to be sure, always check the label. With so many brands, its always better to check.

Hi E E, That depends a lot on the type of orchid, potting media, climate, etc... I usually add 1/4 teaspoon up to a a full teaspoon per gallon of water. I don't really measure... I just take a pinch. It's not exact... Start with 1/4 and see how your orchid reacts. You can increase the dose up to a full teaspoon if it reacts well.

Hi Steve, This will depend a lot on the type of substrate/potting media you use. Start with a super tiny quantity, about one teaspoon per gallon. If your orchid react well, then increase this upto 1 tablespoon per gallon. That is usually way too much for most orchids, but it all depends on the way you care fornyour orchids. Most people usually use 2 teaspoons per gallon in bark with sphagnum moss.

Hmmm. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate heptahydrate, MgSO4. It's fun to try supplements and it shouldn't so shouldn't be necessary if you are using good orchid fertilizer.

Hi Sherman, You are absolutely right. If the fertilizer is a good one, it will have all the nutrients that the orchids need. I've found out that, unfortunately, the most common fertilizers on the market only have NPK and a tiny bit of calcium, if that. But if you can get hold of a good quality fertilizer, that's awesome! No need for the supplements.

I have grown a (non-orchid) flower for years that really needs calcium supplementation for hydroponics here where our water is very soft. I should have thought of that. Thanks again for your help. (I had a cattleya that grew on my kitchen windowsill for years but never bloomed. This time I'm hoping the two withered Phalaenopsis I rescued from a busy friend's windowsill will do better.)

See how the orchid reacts and adapt the quantities from there. You can also soak the orchid in this for a few minutes.
