How you all stayed in the boats is a minor miracle! .Do you (your boat, your watch) or the event organisers give you any race stats or video (for each race) other than elapsed time, that you can analyse later on? So cool that you put yourself out there, vlog the whole thing as well, it just shows how committed to progression you are, it's bloody great.
Outstanding! You are living the dream! It has been a longtime since I have raced. The advice I was given with regards to choppy water was to try to keep shoulders relaxed. That is certainly tall order when your racing, but, I think it makes you more responsive to what is happening to the boat. I think your attitude is great...go for the experience, and enjoy yourself!
Big props to you for taking it on in those conditions. You were asking for any technical comments, and I thought you looked your smoothest/most relaxed when you sculled left hand over-and-ahead-of right on the early part of the recovery. Maintaining that may give you more clearance off the finish and your hands may then be in a comfier place to handle smacking a wave. Anyway - what do I know - Just staying upright in those conditions was astounding! Chapeau!
This reminds me of the conditions at the JIRR yesterday with like meter waves and 33knots of wind. Somehow it wasn’t cancelled. Keep up the good work Cameron, really enjoy the videos
Thank you Cam for capturing and sharing this experience! You must have had the GoPro super glued down - that water was so bouncy! Loved hearing all your feelings and feedback. Very cool to watch.
Can attest to just how bad the conditions were. No amount of prep can prepare anyone for that. We thought Tokyo was rough but that was a whole new level.
these conditions remind me of a place called mountain lakes I had a race last week there and it was good for 500 m then the next 1500 were super bouncy
Love your videos. Love this video. I would love to have you mount a GoPro Max to the end of a back stay that is mounted to the end of a rigger so that we can see your rowing from the side. Catch, finish, leg drive, etc. It would be Yam-O-Lishes.
Congrats! Your videos are getting better every time! Have you ever considered doing coastal rowing? It could be an interesting shock therapy for getting used to wind and choppy water
Hey Cam, always great videos that you put out there! I'm in my first year into rowing, so I watch your content pretty often to get some tips on the erg and on the water! I love your content, and keep up the fantastic work with those yams! 🍠
I’m no professional here but a tip I once got from Noel Donaldson is to hold your hands at the end of the grip to maximise the leverage you get from the oar.

That was my first thought - Loch Ness PtII🥴 - looked a nightmare off the start for the 1st 500 with you dropping to strokeside as the hand separation opened up more to bow trying to balance in the choppy conditions (I’m the last person on the planet to give any advice by the way😆). You finished strong and looked much tidier plus great to see you’re taking loads of positives from that (especially as many of the others have been coached within an inch of their lives!). 1K in a 1x at a typical UK regatta nearly killed me so big respect to anyone racing the 2K even in calm waters😎
Hello from Canada! Great fun to watch and while I can't offer anything on rowing technique, I would suggest a little Rain-X on the cameral lens will help shed the water droplets for clear video :)
Great idea! I've actually tried it before and unfortunately doesn't work as well as it works on windscreens! Must be whatever the coating they have on the lens already doesn't play as well with it 😔
I just got home from state championships at a park called Nathan Benderson Park. The conditions you had were similar to the ones I had to race in during day 1 of the regatta!
Hey Cam, do you think you could do some sort of sunglasses review or shoe off your collection sometime? I have 1 pair of oakleys and want another one but don’t really know which ones are actually nice when you wear them. Nice video by the way
I’m in my first year as a rower, and it has gotten me addicted to your content. I have my Southwest Regionals in 1 week, and I cannot wait to race my 4! Hopefully My boat can go as fast as yours 😁
How cool is that - you get to race the Olympic champ in your first international race #yamsquadgoals Shame the conditions were unpleasant but you stayed upright and didn't ship as much water onboard as Loch Ness. From my recent experience in coastal sculling you need to work on your tap down at the finish to get the spoon out of the water clean a clear of the waves. Maybe practice more taps, and roll ups as a suggestion? But still you got to race the Olympic gold medalist!!! What an exciting adventure so far #yamsqaud.
Definitely! So cool isn't it! Yes something I have to work on for sure. Little more control needed, tapping and keeping the shape all the way trough the recovery. Wouldn't have made it down the course a year ago so there is for sure improvement!
So get this, Cam. I bought some deadlifting shoes (a brand called Core) and then I compared my row to my basketball shoes (Nike’s Giannis) and wow…basketball shoes much better! Way more spring in the movement! Erg rowing definitely felt easier with the basketball shoes.
Well rowed, Cameron. Great how you relaxed after a tricky start. Have you considered rowing with a level rig and hands level? That might make it easier to handle those rough conditions due to having more clearance and setting the boat better at the finish.
Good work in the conditions. I’ve only been rowing for 4mths and would say 60% of that time the water’s been choppy. I’m convinced every stroke will tip me in the river! 😂
Cam - do you reckon Randalfoils would be a useful addition specifically in rough water, or would they just help to mask other deficiencies in your rowing stroke?
That's quite a lot of water sloshing around in your boat! Getting rid of that would give you a couple of seconds. 😀 Great to see you staying upright, I'm not sure I'd have managed that.
Perhaps when you get some flat water, try experimenting with the position of the wing fore/aft compared to the feet. Think you might have a problem hitting the wing at backstops though. I don't know how tall athletes get round that, maybe switch to a stern-mounted wing?
I've actually already tried this after this race. Tried moving it back and has given me more space and helps me not "look" for more. I could still go forward from where I was. It's a big boat! 😂
That's awesome. Think the biggest question to ask is why the gap year then go from there. Loads of clubs around the UK and other countries even as far as Australia or New Zealand. Best is to find a place that fits what you're trying to do in your gap year.
Usually at max height so unfortunately no more room to go up. Wasn't really having issues clearing though. More just a case of having control of the blades!
Hey Cam, question for you. Is there some reason that your oarlocks are undone while strapped on the trailer? I was trained to have them tightened when not on the water. Love these vids so much! Thanks!
Ultra simple comment but It looks quite grabby when the water gets super rough, particularly the right arm looks much more bent off the catch than the left, and drops very low. Maybe focus on being patient through the front to avoid snatching, with how unset boats are in these conditions, take a bit more time to place and connect before driving hard and that may keep the arms straighter and cleaner That being said holding it together in those conditions is very impressive!
If you are still in italy come to row in Genova pra, and if you want pass in the society “canottieri genovesi elpis” we are the oldest society of rowing of all the ligury. Ps. I see a Lot of your video, and all the videos have a great quality, you are a really good rower and UA-camr.
I handle bad water and swell lots better after I started paddling a surfski. I was coming from a pretty unfit base though. It’s still a reasonably stable surfski (I’ve tried a k1 and still go swimming ha ha). I also am a lot better when there is a tinny and coaches around. I did pull out of a race this season and was a bit disappointed in myself but then reminded myself that I wouldn’t have raced the first race that day at previous regattas and then looked at the times the people in my morning race did in the arvo race and decided yep I made the right call (everyone was heaps slower). I did a time trial a few months back and I almost turned around on the way up to the start ha ha. The race side of the river was calmer luckily. I pushed the first km as i knew it was calmer in that section. The second km was fun if I timed my stoke right with the waves (apparently not so fun in a double due to the waves spacing). I got my blade stuck in a wave and my mind just went ‘this is cool it’ll come out soon’ watching it. The 3rd and last km was basically just staying upright. It got too messy and inconsistent and I was stopping when I heard water hitting over the end of the boat til that wave passed. I still wasn’t panicking.....really weird compared to my usual freeze. I was soo looking forward to a 3km race instead of 1km.
