Squats are harder than leg press because there is less emphasis on the legs due to the contributions of the upper body and core. Leg press takes all of that out of the equation to make the legs the limiting factor as much as possible. As a shotput and discus thrower, myself and my teammates do a lot of bodybuilding work and absolute strength training. Throwing both of these, as well as hammer throwing and javelin throwing, require such training to improve vastly. By building the body, we gain more endurance as well as size/mass to put behind the throw. With absolute strength training, it makes the threshold of athletic strength that much higher, while also teaching your body how to operate at near maximum potential and stay safe. This is mainly done in the off season, of course, while we train athletic movements and such during the pre and on seasons.

If you are in your 40s of course there is no harm in using a belt as it helps preventing injuries that are more common in that age, while this is true i also think that someone in their twenties shouldn’t necessarily use a belt for every exercise since its pretty useless if you aren’t doing exceptionally heavy weights (as he already said). The result of using a belt when not needed will probably be a lack of stability when you finally decide to train without the help of a belt.
