About Counterpunching with the Outside Parry
I'm going to present here a defence to an incoming jab that is not used very often. I'm not sure why this rarity of use is the case as I have always found it a wonderful method for punishing a 'telegraphed' or lazy jab coming your way. When performed correctly (usually only by the most skilled of pugilists) this parry not only opens the door to counterpunching with your big right cross but also has a psychological impact on an opponent. This parry is so intricate that if your opponent has their jab parried and then they eat a big right hand, they are going to be reluctant to throw another jab! Once an opponent stops throwing their jab, it's a big step on the way to victory. Because of the way this parry prises open a defence, you could even parry and strike with the same hand in the same move! How 'Mayweather-Cool' would that be!!!!
All of this said, this is a more intricate defence than for instance the conventional counterpunching block of a jab or the counterpunching inside parry of a jab and consequently carries more risk. It should only be used when the opponent's jab is slow or inadequate enough to deserve to be punished! The way I like to think of it is that this defence is more of a 'passive' type of defence. The block and parry links above are much more assertive defences in that they are best used on the attack. In order to reduce the risks slightly on this method of parrying an incoming jab, then combining the move with a lay back may be a sensible option.

Hey there. There is a video on the site about the boxing stance. For boxing, the boxing stance is better (that is not square on') Kick boxers I think go more square on because it helps them both kick better and defends kicks better. I'm no kick boxing expert so I stand to be corrected on that. Cheers.

@Benan66 :-) Believe it or not, having your fingers form a 'crook' in the glove does help, honest!

Great video. Watching boxing matches I don't think I've ever seen anyone do this, but I'm probably not that observant. But I have noticed boxers using the outside parry to deflect the jab to the BODY. Is this perhaps a more common use of the outside parry? Thanks

Yes Bernard, used for that too. Quite common for southpaw vs orthodox.

@cdpardue Hey there. If you are talking about almost a half 'crazy monkey' defense, then I would probably advise against. I often see MMA guys using that defense, the problem is that in boxing I believe that we hit much harder, especially to the body. Bringing the elbow up high will leave a big gap and this gap can be exploited by the opponent turning the jab into a left hook to the body.

@bradleytough Sorry for delay. Yeah, you could do that. It would be an inside slip and works well. There is a video on that on the channel. Cheers

You need to be prepared to push back with a jab so that you can maintain the range to suit you.

Yo man, love your videos. On the a.b.a. level 1 boxing course we're being taught the outside parry as a subtle slip inside and then a small back-hand from the rearhand to deflect the jab outwards but while drilling I find myself naturally pulling off your style. I know they are both variations of an outside parry, but will I be failed in the assessment if I use your style? Also, I know you're busy but could you possibly make some videos displaying techniques on the a.b.a. coaching courses like the wedge block, the stop, outside parrying right hands aimed at the body etc. They are all very alien techniques to me, and though it will be too late for me, I'm sure it'll help all aspiring coaches who are unfamiliar with such techniques.

+hollowbullet Cheers. Will see what I can do. Try to follow the instruction given really, sounds like a bit of a slight variation with a counter. Stick with what they are showing.

My trainer is telling us to outside parry the jab with the lead hand. Kinda like a small pat away. What do you think of that?

Hey guys , I'm no professional boxer , I've just picked up the sport . I have a question which I'm dying to know the answer to .. I'm a tall guy . And when I'm box , I do not get on the inside of the opponent at all . I just move around , throw jabs and combos . My question is , how do I fight a shorter boxer , who is also stronger then me , who manages to slip his way inside almost all the time ??

This is not at all a discredit to your technique or experience and I understand that every practiced technique has it's application: If parrying/counter jabbing the opponent's left hand straight, is it feasible to slightly raise your right elbow while sending out a left straight? What do you think, coach?

Would it not be better to just turn in more with your back leg, so that the shot goes past your forearm, then you rotate back and throw a left hook?
    Cheers man

Imo,both of those come with practice, back when I started practicing boxing I used to be really bad and couldn't dodge things and all,one thing I can tell you is look at how the arm is moving so you can predict the punch.

What if my opponents arms is longer than mine? You said that if we block/parry we are in rage, so how do we parry/block and throw the jab to actually hit him? ( step in in some way)?

+Ricardo Bribiescas Without being too simplistic Ricardo, have better skills! It's also key to push forward with any counter. The reach advantage of the opponent is not going to be huge...3 or 4 inches at most. Check out this vid ua-cam.com/video/BnbkWvgUDrg/v-deo.html

I have a reach advantage but when he ducks , he goes too low for me to land a solid shot . He always ducks before he charges in with the left hook .

Acually, it depends, it's a diffrent story if you are a skilled hooker. If you're as skilled hooker as Jack Dempsey, or Mike Tyson, then it's a diffrent story. If you can punch faster and harder than the opponent, it's easier. But adddeding the skill too, it just shows how it just depends.

NEVER lead with a hook if the fighter was throwing hands like this coach is his right hand would be waiting to counter the easily catchable left hook if you throw a straight shot at the right angle you would connect either to the head or the body with less margin for missing vs lead hooks which are set up punches not lead punches, the happy hooker you see is when the opponent is stunned and covers his face with the left side of the cranium exposed, hook will land MORE OFTEN WHEN BEHIND JAB STRAIGT
