I think a rule that I've always followed is that whatever your melody is on your right hand, it must rest on a base on your left, so as to make choosing between two chords easier. For example if your melody is a "1" on your right hand, the rule says to play a "6" chord on your left (a third lower) so that your melody can sit comfortably. @kingsleykhord please confirm
