- Tilapia correction: The ideal temperature should be
21-29 °C (70 to 85 °F)
Thankyou to those that pointed this out.

1. Environmental Conditions
First consider your your environment, is it hot, cold or tropical? Choose a fish that suits your environmental conditions.
2. Feed Sources
What food to you have access to feed your fish? Will you grow duckweed? Will you breed black soldier fly larvae?
3. Purpose
Are you wanting fish to eat or just for producing waste to feed your plants?
4. Size
How big will your fish tank be and how many fish will you stock? Is it a small desktop system, that is great for a siamese fighting fish(betta) or a big system, that would be great for delicious Murray cod.
5. Is it legal?
The fish you want, could be classified as an invasive species. So remember to check with the local fishery department.
I love tilapia. They've got so much personality, are *SUPER* smart, and are really interactive.
dizzxy Yes, it's really sad to kill and eat living beings when we don't need to. We can happily live on a plant-based diet. I've been vegan for years now. Very healthy. Might consider ornamental fish for aquaponics, but basically I just want the plants for food.
They taste super smart too.
@@sarahvegangarden4822 cool story bruz, me personally I like eating more meat then plants, sure veggies and fruit are good but you need a balanced diet, and Vegans need a shit ton of Vitamins to keep up
@@dantemadden1533 Hi there! What vitamins do you get from dead animals? Vitamins A, B, C, D, E, K can all be obtained from plants. D3 is the one most people (of whatever diet) lack, and it's fed deliberately to farmed animals so meat-eaters get it from the meat. Might as well eat it directly without passing it through another digestive system first!
Many athletes are vegan, including Ironman and other endurance athletes. We're all good and healthy, no worries on that score. 😊💚
@@sarahvegangarden4822 D3 is also found in fatty fish like Wild Salmon, Sardines and Halibut. You're typically not going to get that from muscle meat but rather fish and eggs. Plants also lack preformed Vitamin A retinol, Vitamin K2 MK4, omega-3s DHA and EPA and heme iron which is much better absorbed than non heme iron. (Plants also have less favorable amino acid profiles usually lacking BCAAs, methionine, glycine and taurine in meaningful amounts) The minerals and protein in plants are also lower quality due to poor absorption via anti nutrient content.
"If you're not wanting to eat your fis-"
*me fishing invasive species in the south*
Goldfish can catch these dinner plates too.
Also something interesting to note. Cold water dosent kill fish. So when big fish farms move there fish from the pond to a trucks they have a tank that’s set to a colder temperature so fish can survive if it’s hotter it can kill the fish. That’s why when you buy pet goldfish they tell you to set the bag in the aquarium so the water in the bag will gently level out to the temp in the aquarium that’s extremely important fish are more sensitive than you may believe
Cold water definitely kills fish what are you talking about. It's just as harmful as water that's too hot
I had a couple dozen gold fish in a small outside pond 350 gal in Missouri. Most lived 10 plus years with water temps from ice to 90f. Stopped feeding them at 55f or lower. Would go 5-6 months without food.
This is true....100%
I remember putting flathead catfish in one of my aquaponic systems... it was a horrible idea because they are difficult to handle... 6 of them died and i still have no idea why... the ratio of fish to bio filtration was perfect and there was no solid waste buildup, food was protein rich.... it may have been an infection or disease... i replaced them with goldfish after some big adjustments
Blue gills are native to my area so I was thinking of capturing them then fating them up while leaving a sandy bed to see if my best fish would breed. I have a worm farm that became a black solider fly farm though I still have a decent amount of red wigglers.
My question is how much do they need to eat and how big does the tank need to be to allow them to grow to eating size?
I'm hoping to create an inexpensive system.
Samuel Epicurus Bluegill get around 10+ inches. at least the ones in my aunts pond. they are kinda like a more aggressive goldfish. they will kill ornamental fish though. they eat alot.
Tilapia 11-17C...... Hmmmm I think they are GTG in alot warmer temps...
They are grown in some of the very warmest places in Asia and Africa - and they thrive.
thanks for the great video.
I don't know about the rest of the fish, but the temperature range for tilapia are way off. I keep mine at 80-85F. Never below 55F
the catfish one was weird to.he mentions you can eat catfish then list off a bunch of non edible catfish and one that would cost a few hundred dollars to get which is the zebra pleco.
Eric Mastenbrook can tapulia live above 100 deg f
I don't know the answer to that. I would really doubt it. I can't picture a situation in nature where the water temps would ever get that high
hey ,if anyone else needs to find out about aquaponics book try Aqua Recovery Tactics (aqua.RecoveryTactics.com ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my mate got excellent results with it.
What is a correct fish for a 100x55x60 tank, thinking about gold fishes but i think the tank might be a bit too small
Could I use crappie or bass I plan on using my pond and making a bridge across with my plants hooked on the side
Excellent video!
betta can live together I have done it before. once the alpha was established all the fish where find 2 males and a few females in a 10 gallon tank
Very informative!
I hope you also have a video about best plants for Aquaponics.
Your video is very very nice. it Helps alot.
I have koi fish tank, I arrange it aquaponics tanks. Can I mix some Fertilizer (albert solution) or use clear water ?
i haven't seen information on how many fish it would take to grow how many plants
Im I'm California , I'm wondering if a fish called Ptenia Splendida(schnook) would work , fast growth i think would be cool too.... datnoides grow slow but cool ...so probably not a good choice
northern cal ...Trout/// if warmer then perch , talapia , bass
what about crestations like freshwater lobster.
what are your thoughts about using eel tail catfish
Thank you, just the video I was looking for.
Anyone know why to order some Murray cod to receive in the USA?
It’s not a fact that all catfish are bottom feeders either you can train them from birth to eat on the surface. This is good so you can see them, you wanna know how there doing so having them come to you is good
hi.... temperature you are talking is environmental or water temperature?.... please answer
Thank you this helped me so much👌
Staggering video. Well done for publicising it. Sootyzoe
Can we use ell in aquaponic????
Wow nice
Ty
any thoughts on Sturgeon? I saw a video where a guy was using them. They look badass.
Sturgeon needs more space is probably more usual in pay fishing lakes.
What about carp fish?
Should have included minimum tank size for each fish
Cheesus goldfish need 29 gallons for 2 goldfish then an extra 10 gallons per extra fish.
Alexis was a dick about it, but it depends on the amount of fish, i would have also liked a standard "for 10, XX tank size recommended" but you can find that information once you select the fish, this is a great start
+Cheesus There are several factors in books on . One place I discovered that succeeds in merging these is the Fast track grower (check it out on google) without a doubt the no.1 plan i've seen. Check out all the awesome information .
ilovefunnyamv2nd how the hell was I a dick? That's my old channel you called a dick.
ilovefunnyamv2nd all I stated was a rule of thumb. I have been keeping fish for years. It's a general rule of thumb, but now 1 in a 29 gallons +10 gallons per extra is more so accepted within the goldfish community, and that's just for fancies. Single tails require more, starting at 55 gallons.
Can we culture zebra fish, molly ?
So, which fish can you house together?
Good question
Gold fish, a couple small cats, and some plecos
Catfish and bluegill are a good combo, catfish are bottom feeders you can eat, while bluegill are top feeders you can’t really eat, but make a lot of fertilizer. I’d bet in a bigger tank you could house catfish and tilapia as well
@@jovanmcintyre7334 thats a load of bollocks mate. Bluegill are very much so edible and will eat at everything in the water column. Also, catfish are very predatory towards bluegill, especially channel cats.
@@Irishcream216 I know catfish can be predatory but even in a tank with a good supply of food? And yeah that guy doesn't know anything bluegill are delicious. Grew up catching and eating them.
is milk fish is fine in aquaponics?
I'm a bit confused why you would suggest a Beta for aquaponics, with 1 fish per tank, it's very inefficient
ilovefunnyamv2nd if you raise an entire nest of them they can stay together and won't be aggressive to each other. so its possible
You know there's such thing as a divider. And also check for Betta tank used as aquaponics, it's a thing.
If you paid attention he clearly said NOT to put males together. He said do females but not LESS THAN 4.
It's tough to comprehend. English is confusing.
I put 600 plus betta male and female in an IBC for my aquaponic tank together.
What a amazing video!
tilapia 11 to 17C? Where did you get your information?
Various Curious I live and the tropics and we don't keep tilapia at that temperature.....they're usually at room temperature which is like between 26-28°C
tilapia are in the salton sea here in the California desert, so I think they can handle higher temps than that too
That's exactly what I came here to ask. I live in Florida, where talapia thrive, and our water can get up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
Tilapia like 70-80°F or slightly higher. Your aquaponics system will shut down at 50 F
0:56 "cichlid fall under the tilapia species...."
First off, tilapia is a genus & there a plenty of species that fall into that genus. Secondly, cichlid is a family, of which, tilapia is one of many genus that fall into that family.
That misinformation is within the fist minute of your presentation, invalidating *EVERYTHING* else you have to say afterwards
thx m8 ;)
i want to build a system so i can grow australian fish and release them like growing bass, perch and cod
Considering you're ozian why not metion silver perch or jungle perch both excellent for aquaponics from my experiences. Silver perch are hard to find in the wild these days due to carp so the per kg price is good when harvest comes along, better than barra most times. I have 200 in my inground pool with hydroponics set up every winter here in qld when not in use which i get about 500 kg of fillets out of over a 2 week harvest. $24 per kg, not bad for doing bugger all, and lots of veggies too. Cost to feed, well covered by sale of fillets i kid you not.
why not koi, herd the ones with certain coloring are worth allot
Wtf is Ozian, think you mean Aussie mate
I mean a great video but do You know the catfish You named?
What about Oscars and plecos?
Would it be possible to use crustations? I really, really hate fish but I love shrimp, but I've always wondered how efficient it would be to use crustations or other things like snails and such
crawdads would work.
interesting idea, sir.
I suppose it all depends on how the organism breaks down it food and whats the nutrient content of the waste product
Fresh water prawns, they taste very similar to shrimp. There’s giant varieties that can get up to a foot long!!!
Ive seen aquaponic rigs (videos) with mussels and oysters in the tank. But that's the final purifying tank before the water cycles back into the fish's tank. OR a self-contained fish/clam tank where the fish waste is filtered out by mussels and oysters in there with them. But that wouldn't let the waste cycle to the plants...
What about trout??
you can also use turtles , frogs , ducks etc
What about salmon. Too big? Not good for aquaponics system? Why?
no idea why you mentioned siamese fighting fish , small temp range , low stock densities ...
When I was able to keep Betta's, I kept one per fish bowl and they took care of one plant. They were great, except for occasionally nibbling on the roots.
Siamese fighting fish are small yet territorial. Too small for aquaponic considerations.
Most fish will eat earthworms as well and raising worms is east. All you got to do is make sure there’s water on the soil not everyday depending on what climate your in but when there new it’s important to satisfy there needs. I bought 1000 worms 5 years ago and there still alive and producing o yea keep the chickens away from the soil there in cause chickens are savages lol had to fight them one day haha
Which fish is best for haryana.
Zebra plecos are expensive
Wow he does not have a clue, I have been feeding catfish floating food in broad daylight for years.
Years ago I used crayfish because they eat algae and vegi waste. If I were in Australia I would use yabbies high value item.
Tilapia!
What about Crayfish? If any die, the live ones will eat the dead. Easy to maintain.
your range of water temp for Tilapia is incorrect. They wont even spawn until the water is above 75 degrees F
Wouldn't it be easier breeding edible small fish?
Technically not a fish but what about crawfish?
howcome with other fish: flakes, pellets, an assortment of greens, worms, insects, you know, critter food.
and then it gets to the koi and it's like: . . watermelon. peas.
I have a question if one fish dies in the tank. Do you need to replace all the water?
I think the Tilapia eat their dead and cannabilize if there is overpopulation. Not 100 percent sure
Absolutely. You should also add lots of gravel on the bottom of the tank so their mates can give it a proper burial.
Can you use Black Sea Bass and Red Snapper?
If you're growing a seaweed garden maybe. Saltwater fish have to live in salt water. Terrestrial food plants can't live in salt water.
What about crayfish? You would use a betta over a crayfish? Bettas are not a good fish for this.
DashSpud I agree with your statement but the title states "fish" not crustaceans
Catfish are also top feeders when they know food is floating.
6:32 "FOOD!"
How about crayfish ?
Depends on the species. I would look at where they're from.
african catfish dead in 3 to 20 °C ?
I treat people have sometimes it's a female and a female with them siblings are seen it and it's very hard to but you can but yes you can put more than just one but it's kind of iffy
Can't trust these temperatures since you're suggesting talipia & goldfish/koi/carp are in the same range. Tilapia are tropical, carps are not....
There are many components to studying aquaponics. One place I found which successfully combines these is the Keiths Ponics Site (google it if you're interested) without a doubt the best info that I've heard of. look at this super resource.
I have seen ponds were beta raised together from fry have lived together happily without fighting if they have plenty of room. If you have a large pond and put multiple beta fry together in there they will live happily. It's such a myth. The fighting comes when you try to put multiple mature adults together.... then they fight. And your temperatures and food suggestions are off on many breeds and types. I suggest you do more research.
Are you sure tilapia temperature range 11 to 17 degrees celcius?? Wow. Why you even make this video with wrong information. Amazing.
Edit: your video stop there at 1:04 end.
Catfish also eat snails.
Catfish eat their kin and even pop. They are like bacteria but in bigger form becouse they anything
I have spent months studying home aquaponics and found a great resource at Keiths Ponics Site (google it if you're interested)
I thought the Tilapia was a noxious fish under the Biosecurity Act in Australia.
JC Studios - they did say to check to make sure the fish are legal in your area.
You clearly aren’t from anywhere along the Murray darling basin because if you were you’d know silver perch thrive in temperatures cooler than you mentioned
Not one species of trout can survive in anywhere hotter than 18 degrees Celsius
Agreed. Trout need colder even, to avoid illnesses and breed properly. They also need currents. Difficult.
We catch them year around in Georgia. I know for fact that I have caught them in rivers and streams above 72 degrees Fahrenheit in the heat of the summer.
Some trout in Arizona have been bred to survive 88 F water....
😍😘
can you use crappies or white perch???
You could, but they grow slowly so are not practical
but they are absolutely delicious
Brady Gross 😂😂 yes they are👍
5:30 Goldfish will survive the winter as long as the water doesn't freeze.
Water can freeze, just not solid.
@@hiilbillybackwoods (eyeroll) yes, I should have said as long as the water they are actually in doesn't freeze. The water at the top of the lake where they aren't swimming can freeze, the water in the lake in the next county can freeze, the water on mars can freeze. As long as the water they are physically in doesn't freeze they will be fine.
Bettas are a ridiculous suggestion.
why?
if you raise an entire nest of them together they won't attack each other and it will be fine.
Idk, if you've got a small tank (2.5 gallons to 5 gallons) and want to do aquaponics on a small scale, you can use bettas.
Jim ive bred bettas as well. mine don't fight. but if I separate the nest and reintroduced them. all hell breaks loose
For small systems, for lets say a science project they would be ok BUT they produce little waste
Catfish will eat at any level.
Tilapia won't live long at 52F.
Tilapia can live in warmer than that….
I use my own waste.

Tilapia are happy up to 90 degrees or even more. Your info is wrong.
Murray Cod are on the critically endangered list.
No shit sherlock
@@dantemadden1533 Do you feel better now cursing out an old woman? Not everyone may be aware of the endangered status of the Murray Cod. My comment was for them...SHERLOCK.

Cichlids are not a type of tilapia. Tilapia are a type of Cichlid. And beta really? Omfg
Honestly I don't get why people love the taste of tilapia. I can't stand it. Trout, though, is delicious.
are you just naming fish? some are just stupid to use
