How F-35 Fighter Jets Land In A Big Storm On An Aircraft Carrier

  • Navy pilots will tell you that not the takeoff from an aircraft carrier but the landing on a flight deck is one of the most difficult things they have ever done. Especially in a big storm or a hurricane. The runway space available for landing planes on the flight deck is only around 150 meters in length, which is not even close to being sufficient for the heavy and high-speed jets used by U.S. carriers. Even with such a little landing area, we had witnessed combat aircraft like the F-35 land safely on an aircraft carrier while a severe storm was occurring. How is it that the F-35 fighter jets can land safely during severe weather conditions?
    #sailors #aircraftcarrier #usnavy
Before beginning their final "glide slope" landing approach, fighter planes will typically do a sharp bank turn over the water to position themselves directly with the deck of the carrier. The process of landing an aircraft on a carrier is difficult, complicated, and fraught with risk, particularly when there are strong winds, rough sea conditions, or when it is nighttime; however, it is routinely accomplished with a high degree of accuracy thanks to the training and precision of the pilots and advanced technology that new fighter jet now possess.
Pilots follow a light on the carrier deck referred to as the Fresnel lens to gain proper alignment as they reduce speed, align the nose of the jet and lower onto the carrier deck. This helps the pilots achieve proper alignment. When the lens is "centered" appropriately, pilots know they are getting in the proper position for the approach. Should it be found to be out of alignment, they will likely need to correct it before continuing.

The logistics of an aircraft carrier are so impressive. What do you think is the most amazing thing about an aircraft carrier? 🤩👍

You are comparing apples to oranges, STOL seldom land on
Catapult assisted arrested landing aircraft carriers! They land on smaller carriers originally designed for helicopters Landing Assault Ships or LHA designed to transport Marines into combat while using the STOL fighters to protect the troop landing from the well deck boats or troop transport helicopters.
There is no comparison between an Aircraft Carrier “CV” and a LHA

I remember hearing a RN pilot saying that landing on an aircraft carrier was like a controlled crash ( he flew Buccaneers), this would be the same for the F-35C US Navy and Marine pilots. Not much has changed, super stealthy aircraft with an arrestor hook, how the F35-B handles a rolling deck i have not heard. I hear it's easier to land than a Harrier as those pilots wish they had more arms and hands at the time of landing, the F-35-B apparently goes to the hover with a push of one button. Then i assume a deck hand tells you are level and touch down, squeaky bum time and i tip my hat to the pilots that do that.

It doesn't matter how well they can land if they are blown out of the sky before they get there. Another concern is EMP. Just how well are these high tech ships and planes shielded?
I have seen reports saying the F-35c could be defeated by a F14d on a regular basis and that's just sad. F-14s are over 40 years old.
In my experience, two of the best things about aircraft carriers are the ride and the food. Not many ships are as fast and none ride as smooth. Food on carriers is some of the best you'll ever get in any military force.

Why the FUCK are they showing VSTOL Operations on a LHA when talking about typical aircraft traps on super carriers? Two entirely separate kinds of operations

What's to stop the plane from sliding off after landing in rough seas before it's tethered down?

Before it is tethered or tied down.......
That is why you tie down the plane.....
So it does not slide off..
If you can not tie it down....
      Everythjng is gone.
Make sure everything is tied down
      That's important thruout the navy.

Wheel brakes. Also if a plane starts to slide the blue shirts or deck crew will attempt to put chocks on wheels to stop it. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. If the seas are extremely rough the planes will bingo to an alternate airfield but if you are flying blue water ops (no bingo) you roll the dice and hope for the best

Aircraft carriers are to big to get at an angle where a plane will fall off or to where it will skid off even under braking....they're over 1000ft long 250ft wide and the flight deck is 60 ft above the water line.
