    I've got cast as an understudy a whopping four times in local productions last year, and this video has been extremely helpful in my preparation of the roles I understudied. I even got to go on three times - planned performances, but still very exciting! And you're right, I would love to see a different reaction to understudies other than moaning and groaning. Thanks so much for this video! Understudies ROCK!!!!!!!!!!

    THANK YOU SO MUCH - I, too, suffered a setback with my voice too. Although it was awful, it taught me so much - especially the question you raised, "Who am I without my voice?" - I managed to get to the other side of that question - even if I never sang again I'm still worthy of love and happiness.

      Great question! A 'book' in musical theater refers to your audition book-a collection of sheet music for songs that you’re ready to perform at auditions. It typically includes a variety of songs showcasing your range, style, and strengths as a performer.

    I have an interesting question for you: now that Actors Equity has phased out the EMC program and implemented the Open Access program for joining the union, what are your thoughts on that? I personally wished they would've kept the EMC program so that I didn't make the mistake of joining the union via Open Access in an area where there's more non-union houses than union houses in my community.

    Wow, this is so inspiring. I’m on a journey now that feels so relatable. I too, grew up in a church environment where my parents taught me music from birth but nothing about secular music. I was in a very very small town but I started taking voice lessons and piano/brass lessons young. I’ve always had a very strong ear. I went to music school after I graduated high school, but my only option was classical, which I didn’t love. I ended up leaving music for years because I felt so disconnected to it. I never knew that musical theatre was a career I could pursue and I truly wish I did. I found my love for music again about 6 years ago through joining a show choir. I know lead this choir and after having two babies, I’m looking to do something for myself. All I want to do is sing and perform and I am so passionate about moving forward with it. So here I am now, watching all of your videos, learning and gaining confidence to take these next steps. Feeling like an imposter stepping into this world because I haven’t gone to theatre school. Thanks so much for sharing your story.

    How long after a final call back did you hear that you’ve booked the job? Will they tell you if you didn’t?

    • @32BARCUT
      @32BARCUT 12 днів тому

      They don't normally tell you if you didn't. Mostly because they keep their options open, and it would be an enormous amount of work all the time to let everyone know. I'm not saying that it is right, but that's just what they do. Sometimes you hear same day or even in the room if you booked it, OR sometimes I have booked a job three months later after completely forgetting about it. LOL

    Number 11: “The Hater” The Hater is known for looking down their nose at everyone else in the audition room. The Hater sees themselves as above the other actors, and comes up with dehumanizing nicknames for them . The Hater is prone to judgement and cynicism. Often, The Hater is annoyed by other people existing. If you are over prepared, under prepared, breathing too loudly, stretching, or even being too friendly, you are sure to annoy The Hater.

    Do they ever do chemistry reads with other called back actors at this level?

    • @32BARCUT
      @32BARCUT 12 днів тому

      That is increasingly rare. Chemistry reads happen, but normally only when there is genuine concern that a particular lead may not vibe with a costar. I would say more in the final callback range is it possible to have a chemistry read.

    Such great recollections - thank you both! On my first West End audition I was auditioning for West Ends biggest casting director. I was asked to prepare a pop songs and I decided to sing one of my all time favorite songs 'New York State of Mind' - I knew this so well and long before I became an actor - this was was in my very core. I have just been called and as I am walking up the stairs, a friend of mine was coming down and he is a tad upset. He said to me in passing "if he picks up his phone he doesn't like you" this was said with some venom. Well, I walked in knowing I was going to do a great job. I greeted the two auditors and walked over to the accompanist and told him what I was going to sing. I had marked everything well - he said great. I gave him the tempo. I walked over to my spot and I did my slate. Just as I was finishing my slate this guy picked up his phone. The music started and I completely forgot the opening line of the song. I tried again but nothing. I haven't been asked back since. A very small part of me wants to blame him, because I feel what he did was rude and unprofessional. Ultimately, however, it is my fault for not doing what I went in to do. WE learn from these moment.
