I know you going to love having a wrist pin cushion for your sewing and hope you enjoy my version. If you make one, be sure to tag me on social media so I can see! 🤩🤩
So happy you’re coming back to see us!! We’re dusting off our sewing machines, getting our pins nice and straight and eagerly sitting next to our computers. Glad you’re back!
My mom (Evelyn) used to make her own pin cushions too. She used felted wool ( usually a shrunken wool sweater) and a pad of plain steel wool (which will help keep pins sharp). I think I’m going to combine both of your ideas. Your cuff bracelet and her wool and steel wool. Glad to see you back and can’t wait for more of your videos.
Since I was a teenager ... over 60 years ago ... I have saved my hair as it was cut off at the hairdresser's salons. No, not the 1" pieces, but when I have had more drastic cuts. I use this hair for pincushion stuffing. I have also made two old-fashioned 8" pillows that I place on my dresser to keep broaches and other pins. The hair is perfect for all pins, and it doesn't dull the sharp ends like polyester would. This is an old-fashioned and historic use for hair.
When I started sewing againd during lockdowns, I tried making pincushions stuffed with many different things and to be honest, my own hair has been the best, I'm not stuffing pincushions with anything else anymore. I use what I clean out of my hairbrush, washed well with dish soap, rinsed and dried... I tried linen and cotton scraps and my crappy pin set just bounces off, even some of the good pins do... I tried cotton batting, same thing even though I was careful not to compress it too much. I need to remake my travel pincushion with hair. It's the cardboard equivalent of a mason jar snap lid that's been padded on one side and has an elastic wristband on the other so I can flip it with the pins down into a jar along with thimble and thread for travelling, or wear it as a wristband, or have it with the jar as a base so it doesn't slide around (I don't like it on my wrist for when I'm taking them out of something at the sewing machine).
Just watched this with my soon to be 90 year old Mother whose name is Evelyn, and who has sewed for most of her life. She said this is the first time she has seen anyone make something like this, and she really enjoyed it.❤❤
That's lovely! Evelyn is wonderful viewing, the pleasantest way to be educated. Enjoy more of her videos with your dear Mum. There's no age limit on learning...!
Evelyn, fellow Australian here, and so very delighted to hear that you have recovered. I love the passion that you relay for your craft. Keep up the good work!

So happy to see you back Evelyn! You have been very missed! I'm 69 and have been sewing all my life (when I was 6 I put my mother's sewing machine needle through my thumb...) Your knowledge is extensive and a great gift to our community. May there be many more happy years ahead of you!
After wanting to do this for a long time, I finally did it today. Thank you for the instructions. I’m so happy to see you happy and healthy again. I also embroidered my first initial on my pin cushion as an honor to you. I discovered you during Covid as I started my sewing and embroidery journey.
So glad to see you back, Ms. Evelyn. And what a wonderful way to start your new adventure. Well done. I learned sewing through the lockdowns. My first project was to sew a housewife/husef to hold all of the needles from the sewing needle & machine needle packs I'd accidently collected over the years. Bonus points for freeing up space. My second project was to make a wrist cushion that could slide on and off of an old wide leather cuff bracelet. I made a rectangular box with some thick velvet fabric, and then made a second box to slide inside of the first out of some cotton. Attached to the bottom of the cotton box were two loops to slide the bracelet through. The top velvet and the cotton interior are sewn together at the edge of the rectangle. The finished stuffed rectangle can slide on and off the bracelet.. That way I can throw it into the wash from time to time. And, agreed, porcupine pinning is a hazard. I've learned the hard way... - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
So Pleased to see You Are Back!!! A Joyous Event & certainly needed… No Pins in Mouth or Floor…. I know so well. In 1970s my Mother was cutting out a pattern on floor & got a pin in her ankle… it broke off ( Glass head - so she wouldn’t loose!) She had to have Major Ankle Surgery remove!!! Be warned!!! LPin Cushions are so essential & also a Strong Magnet to find any strays on the floor. Regards from UK.x
I'm so happy to see you back. Congratulations on beating cancer. I had surgery for cancer in February and passed my 6mo f/u so hopefully I am cured. I have been wanting a wrist pin cushion. Now I can make one! Thank you for the tutorial.
Oh, Evelyn, I LOVE the thought of filching a handful of stuffing from someone else's pillow! Maybe we could go over to the Ritz and sneak a little wad of stuffing from their lobby pillow! Or the Palace! What at hoot of an idea!!! The next wad might be filched from the county slammer!!! :).
Congrats on ringing the bell, Evelyn. It's definitely the best part of treatment. I have several wrist pincushions, my favourite is filled with crushed walnut shells to keep the pins sharp.
You look marvelous! I made mine using wide elastic. I covered a piece of plastic from a take-out food container. About 1.5" by 2". Sewed the wide elastic to the ends to fit my wrist, and hand stitched a regular hexi pin cushion on top. After you first posted your tutorial ages ago, I looked for cuffs in thrift stores. They were pricey, so mine is "plan B". Best thing is I've quit putting pins in my mouth! Thank you sew much!
Soooooo happy you are back! MUCH LOVE! Several years ago I made my working pin cushion. I made it from canvas, shaping a circular cup/bowl base to put the cushion into snuggly. On the bottom I have sewn a square piece of fabric, sewn down on two sides, that allows me to put through my silver bracelet, that I always wear. Around the sides of the “bowl”, I attached a wide band of beaded loom work. I wish I could share it here. It turned out really great for my sewing projects!
So excited to see you again!! I actually shouted out for joy when I saw this and my husband thought I had hurt myself!! Lol. So happy to hear of your victory over cancer and I’m looking forward to seeing what sewing adventures you have in store for us!! ❤️🙏
I made mine out of a circle of cardboard the size of a mason jar snap lid, it's got the padded cushion on one side and an elastic wristband on the other so I can either have it as a stable pincushion screwed to a jar with a mason jar lid, on my wrist when I need it there, or screwed to the jar with the pin side down inside the jar for safe travel, I usually use a 125 ml jar to fit a small spool of thread and my thimble but recently swapped the small jar for a bigger one that I can fit my whole small project in. I used batting and my cheap pins bounce off it a lot so I will probably remake it with the stuffing that works best for me, my own hair salvaged from my hairbrush, washed with dish detergent, and dried.
As a fellow cancer survivor, I congratulate you on winning through the battles! Good to see you. Xxx😊🎉💕 I've always wanted a wrist pincushion but never took the time to make one. I have a little red tomato with sawdust that's disintegrating, but I have to admit my lazy solution. During the 80s when shoulder pads were in everything, I took them out because I have square shoulders naturally. I've been using one of those shoulder pads as a pincushion for years. I'm going to make myself a wrist one at last. Thank you! 😊 (Edited a LOT because of darn typos.🫣)
I’ve just made one from a vintage fabric scrap sourced from my hubby’s Nanna. I used polyester wadding. It was so easy to roll and hold into shape. I wished that there was a photo upload feature here so I could show you a pic. Thanks for the inspiration 💗
OMG I have been waiting for this day forever. Welcome back. I am so HAPPY to see you back and healthy. I have been checking to see if you have returned. the whole time you were away. The first thing I checked was the date of this, to see if it was new. I love watching you and just listening. I think of you every time I don't take my foot of my foot peddle and accidentally sew a few unexpected stitches. That, for me, is the best advise you have given me. Best wishes and happy thoughts from Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
So good to see you again, Evelyn. (and BTW, your hairstyle is incredibly flattering to you.) I need to make a wearable pincushion, definitely...once my sewing room is unpacked after the renovation!
You are an inspiration for not only those who sew but those with cancer (I don’t have it just to be clear) You are a brave, strong woman to go through this and still help those who need it.
Wonderful to see you back and making a new sewing friend (your pin cushion). I made one of these after the first time you did one only I used WIDE elastic instead of a metal wrist band and I'm still using it till this day. Looking forward to what ever you get up to next 🥰
Sew nice to see a happy you! You are talented and provide a refreshing learning opportunity for sewists 'round the world. God saved you for the rest of us to be inspired....
Nice to see you back Evelyn, I'm so happy to see you again, we have been praying for your well-being. I made mine with an elastic wristband instead of metal because I'm allergic to metal strange I know, I'm looking forward to seeing many posts at whatever you get up. Hope to see you next time keep up and may God bless you and your family ❤
I'm so happy to see you back! Your looking well, everyone has been praying for your healing, take good care of yourself and don't push yourself too hard.
Welcome back as our official content creator. You have been missed, and you look fabulous! Even though I don't sew a lot (my machine is finally accessible), I do a lot of crochet as well. I have made my little necessity by crochet. It has an echinacea bloom and a black-eyed Susan bloom. They are both cone flowers with large raised centers. The stem is the part that goes around my rest and secured with velcro. I was so excited to use it the first time. The cone parts make a fantastic pin cushion.☺ I love yours made with scrap fabric. Isn't it wonderful to put that to use?!
Welcome back! The last time I made a pincushion, I filled it with "pincushion filling" which is available online. It is composed of ground up walnut shells, and I found it was the perfect texture.
So pleased to have you back, congrats on beating cancer. I made two of these years ago when I saw your first video on making them, best pin cushion ever.
This pin cushion is now on my bucket list. I just have to find a bracelet that will work.
