    Resident Evil (バイオハザード Baiohazādo?, literally "Biohazard") is an action, adventure, horror fiction video game based media franchise created by Shinji Mikami and owned by the video game company Capcom. The franchise focuses around a series of survival horror video games, but has since branched out into comic books, novels and novelizations, sound dramas, a series of live-action films and animated sequels to the games, and a variety of associated merchandise, such as action figures. The overarching plot of the series focuses on multiple characters and their roles in recurring outbreaks of zombies and other monsters, initially due to the release of the T-virus, a biological weapon created by the fictional Umbrella Corporation.
    The eponymous first game in the series was released in 1996 as a survival horror video game, but the franchise has since grown to encompass other video game genres. The series is a mix of action and horror film-inspired plotlines, exploration and puzzle solving, but from Resident Evil 4 onwards, the main series took a more third-person shooter approach with fewer puzzles and greater emphasis on gunplay and weapons upgrading. As of 2015, the video game series has sold 61 million units worldwide. It has become Capcom's biggest ever franchise in terms of sales and marked the start of the "survival horror" genre, which was already influenced by earlier efforts such as Sweet Home (also by Capcom) and the Alone in the Dark series.

    What I really like about RE2 was that they explained why there were puzzles if you read the correspondence between various members of the police department. People frequently complain about the chief's strange portraits, etc... Which keep being brought into the station and many start thinking the chief was going crazy.

The boy really wanted to be an astronaut when he was a kid, but they denied him his dream because he was just too big. That lead him down this really dark road and it's the reason that he is so mad. He especially hates Jill, because she embarrassed him at Space Camp when they were kids and he's NEVER let it go..He wants to destroy her for making the class laugh at him.

IMO really the only old game that has held up in terms of atmosphere and nuance is Silent Hill and its sequel Silent Hill 2. really the sound design overall isn't too good when it comes to building atmosphere.
      oh and there are so many stupid moments where you go through a door and surprise surprise zombie jumpscare. that and the amount of zombies that hide around corners that you cant see until you go around and the camera is right there is fucking laughable. hell the fucking crimson heads are enemies that are specifically designed to jumpscare. you are adorable so please keep on telling yourself that the original RE games weren't base off of jumpscares

      Then do what you want. But I want Code Veronica be remade with modern graphics, because these old graphics do not hold up today. It's the same with Doom 3. The game is good and I gladly replay it. But the graphics are old, so it won't do for a rerelease. It must be made a new, like it was the case with REmake. Same gameplay, but it looks different and sounds different. RE0's port improved the graphics to the point it almost was a remake of its own. I want CV to get the same treatement. Just because it looks good enough for you doesn't mean it looks good for todays standards. I want the change be mostly for the character models, the dialogue and new cutscenes. Decorative changes.

    Its nice to see you tackle things outside of First Person Shooters. I'm not the biggest fan of that genre but I did like your reviews of them regardless. Now that FPS games have kinda taken a bigger seat in the market, I can't help but feel like games such as Resident Evil was intimidated into the turds that RE5 and RE6 turned out to be. The RE2: Remake project is a wonderful sign of returning to the roots, but I hope you tackle more non-FPS games that really deserve a spotlight on your channel.

RE:6 just isn't a Resident evil game, end of story. its not a half bad game but they stuck the resident evil name on it and it just didn't work out. the reason i know RE:5 would have been fantastic if they set it at night time, well just look at the DLC. it's funny, I found Claire's campaign in resident evil 2 easier. the reason why, is boss battles. if you have a bunch of flame rounds, the birkin encounters are so easy. simply because you can stun lock his ass to high heaven. excellent vid btw, very entertaining.

      +funkykriz21 Not every boss. Flame rounds just work really well against Birkin. Like I said, they stun lock him, so if you have a large amount, all you have to do is aim and fire until he's dead, and you wont take any damage...as long as you are careful and know what your doing. Acid rounds do more damage against him, but they don't stun him.

      Leon gets weapon upgrades though. An upgraded shotgun is more than enough to take out Birkin phase 2 in under 10 shots. You do have to be careful because the recoil animation takes as much time as Birkin's stun animation, but with proper positioning you can end the fight in as few as 7-8 shots. Then you get the upgraded magnum, and this beast can end the first phase of the Birkin 3 fight in 3 shots. Not even joking.

    As much as I liked this very thought-out review, one main thing bugged me. You were making it seem like Mr X only ever showed up during Claire's campaign, even though you already stated about the A & B scenario. For example, through out the whole video you were making it seem like the ''B'' scenario only effected your Claire play-through, basically stating that you clearly played as Leon first, and then Claire, not the other way around. Try a new game as Claire (A) and then try the B game as Leon and you'll notice a decent amount of difference in gameplay in story. But a fantastic review, keep it up!

    P.S. Don't forget about Code Veronica...aka the last true Resident Evil. (I guess you could make this argument with Zero also)
    While RE4 was great and RE5 was descent...the originals will always be king.
    Now hopefully they don't fuck up the RE2 remake...but it's highly doubtful they'll use pre-rendered backgrounds, which is honestly a bummer.
    Because the amount of detail in these environments was staggering in RE2 & 3.
    Now if you'll excuse me I'm off to go play the RE1 remake for Halloween!

    • @caboose309
      @caboose309 8 років тому +3

      +Eric Durant while i do enjoy the first three i can honestly say that i think RE4 is vastly superior. they did away with some extremely frustrating elements and managed to keep the horror atmosphere for the majority of the game. yeah the ending was more like an action movie but to me at least it still felt good and didn't detract from the earlier parts of the game. Putting RE5 during the day was fucking stupid and really really doesn't work with the horror atmosphere they were trying to go for and RE6 just went full on action movie. Actually if you haven't tried them then you should try RE Revelations and Revelations 2 because they seriously got the atmosphere right. they are tense and while short they don't overstay their welcome.

    • @caboose309
      @caboose309 8 років тому

      +blitzstrk it had the best item management of them all IMO and btw if RE4 didn't scare you then how the hell did RE 1 scare you. Having played both pretty recently again I can see how neither are really that scary and IMO at least RE4 had the fucking terrifying regenerators. RE 1 didn't have really anything even remotely scary besides a few jumpscares. The atmosphere really wasn't there. Lol when a god damn lighter takes up the same amount of space as a fucking rocket launcher you know we got issues. Plus any dialogue immediately takes you out of it. Don't get me wrong I love the originals but I think a lot of people who thought they were scarier first played them when they were young.

    • @ablationer
      @ablationer 8 років тому +5

      The problem with RE4 is that this type of camera ruins any possible chance to get ambushed, except from dead angles like behind or something. Despite the technical improvement that comes with the shoulder cam, it absolutely shatters the atmosphere and you really need to step your game up to make up for it (Like in Dead Space for example)
      Regenerators were the only scary enemy type in RE4 whatsoever, every other kind was pretty mundane, brown, and spanish. Some of the special enemies and bosses were pretty interesting, but otherwise the vibe just wasn't there.

    A pleasantly surprising video. You gave a very good synopsis of each game. I never felt the story in the first game was that good though, and I'm pretty sure Oswell E. Spencer wasn't even introduced to the story until Code Veronica. The second game probably has the best story in the series, but the series never really makes it clear which ending is canon. It seems to be that a combination of both is the true canon.
    I sort of have a soft spot for the first game, because it was the first in the series I've played, and it offers some of the most memorable gaming moments I've experienced, but RE 2 is indeed the best out of the 3. Nemesis is the worst, but it does have the best ending in the series.
    I enjoyed your conclusion very much. The series has a lot of flaws, but they're not that relevant in the grand scheme of things.

    It's not Claire's scenario that is harder it's scenario B. There are two scenarios in Resident evil 2, scenario A and B. Scenario A is easy, scenario B is much harder. You can actually play the other way around, where Leon is getting haunted by Mr. X and Leon kills him with the bazooka, at their last confrontation.

      In fact, from what I've read, that's how the game is meant to be played. Leon gets the G-virus from Ada and that's why Mr.X is tracking him down. Sherry having the G-virus inside her pendant in scenario B was just a way to make it work, but it's not the intended canon.

    16:30 Some of the documents you find in the station actually explain the obtuse puzzles; Irons imported all of the macabre art with the bribe money he got for covering up Umbrella's nefarious doings, and then deliberately scattered resources and keys around the station to doom the rest of the police force hiding therein.
    Irons didn't seem to have any kind of contingency on how he'd get out of this predicament, but he wasn't exactly playing with a full deck as you can see.

      There's almost no ammo pickups for the Bow Gun. I think there's only 2 in the whole game for Claire. One in the Evidence Room and one later in the Weapon Storage Room. Compare that to over a dozen shotgun shell pickups. Claire may have better weapons, but she really gets shafted on ammo. And Leon gets a special flamethrower in the Lab specifically for the Ivys, while Claire has to waste grenade shells on them because nothing else does worthwhile damage.

Then the jokes and memes started as people made fun of Sheva's incompetent AI, the racist tribal stereotypes, and Chris's newfound steroid addiction. Once that ended the resentment set in, and now people shit on the game just for the sake of it.

    The Resident Evil franchise has had the most influence over my gaming experience. The first time I was introduced to a Resident Evil was when I was 8 years old and my father had bought my elder brother a bunch of PS1 titles including Resident Evil 3. Watching my elder brother play - and subsequently playing it myself was absolutely horrifying to me.
    I think having experienced the game at such a young age has skewed the way I look at RE3 in particular, as I can't imagine a more terrifying monster than Nemesis. Literally walking through a hallway and suddenly hear the words; "S.T.A.R.S" induced such dread to me as a child. Back then I wasn't running away from him due to any real good decision making, it was simply because he scared the shit out of me. It's the RE game I have the fondest memories of, and that is undoubtedly because I was stupid enough to play it at such a young age, but god damn if RE1, RE2 and RE:Remake aren't amazing, if not objectively better in some fashion.
    I think I'd go as far as to say RE:Remake is probably the best old school RE game thus far, and I'm both excited to no ends, and terrified to no ends by the announcement of a RE2:Remake. Simply because RE2 was such an amazing game, and the fact that Hideki Kamiya & Shinji Mikami are no longer with Capcom to help realize this game's full potential. God, Capcom, please make RE2:Remake as good; if not better than the RE1:Remake.

      So Outbreak, Code Veronica, Zero don't count?

      Walamonga 1313 to me Outbreak is a more real take of resident evil would you agree though and I do like it too never played zero I hear its good.

      Andon Christian El That's exactly why I like Outbreak. It's the closest RE got to an actual zombie apocalypse feeling, the locations were great and the puzzles were all much more realistic.
      And Zero is good but not nearly as good as REmake. The inventory can be really annoying and the game itself is quite hard. Plus the story doesn't tie in to the rest of the series.

      Not even 4 and 7?

    The puzzles in RE2 make sense when taking into account that a.) The police department was converted from a museum and b.) Chief Brian Irons set up a lot of the puzzles to prevent access to the sewers/Umbrella lab under the city.

    Just played RE1 for the first time as Jill and it was honestly the best of the PSone trilogy. If I start REmake for the first time, should I still start with Jill since she's a lot easier?

    how can you talk about survival horror without mentioning the original Alone in the dark? It came well before the first resident evil. Not to mention RE pretty much copied the idea and mechanics of survival horror from Alone in the dark.

    • @Gggmanlives
      @Gggmanlives  8 років тому +18

      +Dan Vincent RE is vastly superior to it and I wanted to focus on RE not other games.

      +Gggmanlives fair enough, but you should give credit where it's due. RE owes alot to the original Alone in the dark. Yeah RE is much better , but it came out four years after Alone 1. Japanese are famous for ripping off ideas and not giving credit.

      Actually Resident Evil is a spiritual successor to a game from 1989 called Sweet Home also made by Capcom. Japanese studios practically made the industry what it is today, the West needed to be shown how to make games for a long time my friend.

    • @danvincent7717

      +skippymurphy North Americans invented video games, and the very first survival horror game technically was Haunted house for the Atari 2600. So yeah, Japan owes us some credit. I was talking about the game play style and use of fixed camera angles RE copied from Alone in the Dark.

    • @skippymurphy
      @skippymurphy 8 років тому +4

      Yeah sure, no arguing RE used those camera angles and style of play but I was just pointing out to you the fact that Capcom had already set the foundations in 1989. Also yes it's true Video Games were birthed in the US, but make no mistake the Japanese showed you and others in the world how to actually take advantage of the medium.

    Sadly, RE just never clicked for me. The tank controls never let up, and I just got more enjoyment playing things like Silent Hill or Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. I'm not saying it's the game's fault, I just can't "get it", so to speak. It's a shame, too, because everyone else seems to enjoy it.

    • @EndHunter8
      @EndHunter8 8 років тому +4

      I perfectly understand you. RE never really "clicked" with me either, I mean it is not bad but Silent Hill 2 was just that more great to me. I guess it is because i like atmosferic, horror games with "simple, and weak" characters who i can relate to more than special forces dudes going against zombies... Not that those games are bad, they are just not for me.

    • @GentleHeretic

      EndHunter8 Yeah, I don't enjoy jumpy horror, which RE is full of.

      +Jacob Smith It takes time to get used to the controls. But even still you can expect to get cheesed out a fair bit.

      Haha Pretty sure Silent Hill has tank controls. I get it if you like it more then RE for other reasons but Silent Hill's 1's controls are even clunkier then RE's.

      Well you are trying to get into a game that is obviously too old to satisfy your standards. If you only tried to get into it when coc dark corners of the earth was already out then I understand why it doesn't click for you.

    Honestly, skip RE6. It was utter shit. Just play RE4, and skip to RE7. RE7 restored my faith after RE6 and Operation: Raccoon City.
