How I Turned a Tree Into a Whale Tail! (Bike Jump)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 31 тра 2024
- Whale tails are mountain bike features that mimic the back of a whale. They're super fun to ride... but they take a long time to build, even with help. It took 8 days to build this one at Everstoke and it wasn't without a wrench or two thrown into the works.

Huckback Whale 🐳
This has got to be the winner! I've run it past both Brian and Aaron and they're on board! Thanks for the suggestion Peter!
@@BCpov Glad I could help! Keep up the good work and be safe out there
@Peter Dy Sweet name dude congrats 👍👊
Creekback (or creakback, if the feature creaks when a rider is on it) came to mind first for me. Well, now we know where the rest of creature is that goes with Huckfin at Stone Starlet.
I think “Moby Dig” would be a great name. It sure took a lot of digging to create, and it’s always good to reference classic literature!
You have my vote
Top tier
Ha! My first thought was “Moby Deck”
Oh yeah, that's perfect!
A little obvious but I like it.
Humphrey! This was a humpback whale that swam up the Sacramento River in Northern California, a few hours from Graeagle, not once but twice, in 1985 and 1990. He got lost and swam almost 70 miles upstream in a freshwater river! The media named him "Humphrey the Wayward Whale."
second this one
That is a winner!!!
I was going to suggest the same one! Locals will know the story.
@@nwahs yeah I remember that very clearly because we used to waterski in that river.
@@ericmonty me too, as a kid! Kinda nasty water, now that I know better.
If its size really is somewhat fitting I'd name it "Whale for scale" 🐋
Love your building episodes btw!
Such a good video (as always) Eric - those gaps looked gnarly and I have so much respect for making it rideable for all ! For a name - my vote is call it the "Bridgeback Whale"!
Thanks Josh, and I like the name🙂
Love the name
dang i was about to suggest that name
I love that you decided to put the bridges in. I wish more people would say "no, thats to scary, specialy for less experienced riders. Let's make it a table top." My fear of the gap is much worth than the jump...
all the dead branches falling off the cedar when it hit the ground was perfect lol
Everstoke… such a good name for a bike park!🤙🏻
It really is!
the story telling combined with the drone shots is insane. good job!
Glad you liked it!!
Yes, these videos are extremely well produced!
@@BCpov Yes, you've come a long way from pure POV, LOL! You might have to change the channel name from BCpov to WWpev for World Wide professionally edited videos!
Loved this video! It was so therapeutic to watch. I think a good name to name this would be “Free Woody”
I just want to say how much I've appreciated your cinematic approach to making videos over the past year. Your pacing, techniques, and editing have become such a strong focus of your videos. As a current game developer, it's really cool seeing your approach to creative decisions for your channel. Love it man, keep it up! Y'all are doing something incredible.
Thanks for noticing Max, trying hard here! Unfortunately it hasn't been translating in to views in 2022 :(
I agree. The fotage of the first snow was breathtaking
@@BCpov I know that everybody in UA-cam comments acts like they're an expert on making UA-cam videos, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I've a lot of UA-camrs say that upload frequency plays a huge part in how the algorithm handles your uploads. Maybe a mix of more cinematic videos and "basic" riding videos would be a decent approach?
Also, although it might be cringe, asking viewers to rate the video might really push engagement. The name suggestion-thing is a great idea already though!
Anyway, I couldn't agree with Max more, your videos are amazing and always make my day a little sweeter.
That's the kind of features I like to see. It's great to have bridges instead of gaps, so pretty much everybody can enjoy the feature. Experience raiders will simply gap the bridge, less experiences riders can give the gaps a try without high consequences if something goes wrong and newbies can simply enjoy riding the bridges and the whale tale without having to get to tires off the ground. Excellent work!
My suggestion for the name is somewhat difficult to pronounce - DUANFAWT - it stands for 'Don't use Amazon Nails for a Whale Tail.' Loved the video!
I think that’s a GREAT idea
this is stupid
Okay this one is epic.
pronounced Doo-on-fot
That closing shot was amazing.
Can't wait to see the trails at Everstoke all come together. Those bridges definitely opened it up to be used as an advancement feature as opposed to only advanced riders which IMO was a great decision.
"Faith Tail" that's my name for it... Congrats Eric!! Very nice build
The sound design from camera shake to actual Rokon idling is editing mastery. You always keep it fresh and entertaining, Eric. I'm never let down!
Thanks Rich :)
I appreciate the bridges, I'm a 51 year old "all mountain" downhiller. You can test that and learn into it without full commitment. "No Fail Tail"
Great job making the feature rideable for almost anyone. No real downside to this approach and allows a lot of progression to occur on a single feature.
Moby's Trick and great rethink on your feature to make it hittable by all 😎
Great vid. I'm going to put "Blubber Bridge" into the mix.
You're so honest in your editing and show what can happen and how you overcome it, call it 'Fortitude' 👍
Man, that is a gorgeous, perfect dead tree you found, like trail gold.
Jesus... it's just so satisfying to watch him nailing the jump perfectly...
snow makes everything look beutiful
The feature looks a lot like the slope of a Beluga. So, I would name it "The Blasting Belgua" because it launches the rider out with such force. Love the vids recently!!! Keep them coming 🤟
“A Tall Tale”, “Jumpback”, or “WTF”(Whale Tail Feature).
Awesome video BTW!
The closing Shot was absolutely epic!
props Eric for you to look at something, realize a) you aren't up to it and b) a lot of others wouldn't be able to enjoy it either and making the necessary changes
Loved the build you could name it the humpback hucker
I love how much falling and milling you personally did. Well done!
Such amazing cinematic quality. Love your videos. that drone shot of the endless snow was breathtaking
Such an awesome feature .
It's now usable for everyone.
Great build video
One of my favorite videos of yours in a while. The tree falling followed by that snowy campfire… love it!
Name it "Monstro", after the whale that ate Pinocchio.
On a side note, I ended up with the exact same scenario. I built a whale tale, and then had to add some tables before we could try it out. I made a video of us trying out that whole trail for the first time too. Love capturing that excitement and anxiety that comes with riding something not just for our first time, but the first time anyone has ridden untested features. Because at that point, you really don't even know it its possible.
Oh, I like this! The whale that ate the wooden boy....made from wood!
you really got me on the edge of my seat when the tree fell over
I had the same problem 😅😅
Wow Eric what and effort, you really put in the hard work. I love how the tree's curve worked so well for the stringers.
Some of this cinematography is beautiful
Can’t get over how well made your videos are. I always look forward to watching them. Nice work on the feature! How about Moby Deck?
That's a fantastic name.
Were you an arborist at one point in your life Eric? That tree you cut down wow, looked professional! Love your build episodes! Thanks for sharing!
Haha, defnitely not! If you know what to look for, I messed up that undercut pretty badly! It's a tricky cut!
Na he's just Canadian
@@BCpov yeah searingly
As always, I gotta say I could watch you build trails all day! Love this feature! Thanks for the great vid! Also I second “Moby Deck”.
When you first started building Stone Starlet, I wasn't the biggest fan, but since then I've grown to love your trail-building videos, possibly even more than your biking ones! Your skill, craftsmanship, and attention to detail is fantastic and very entertaining to watch. Looking forward to seeing you continue to hone in your skills!
Incredible video! From production and quality to the actual build of the tail. Incredible job! I’m gonna go with a name to tie into it’s home: Sierra Whaler
Amazing build. Thanks for taking mortals like me into consideration. 😁
It looks even better with the additional bridges!
Awesome! That looks super fun! When you were testing it after making the bridges I was "mind jumping" it with you!
Way to go putting the bridges on. Gonna be a super fun feature for all skill levels
I'd call it "A Whale of a Time" as it looks super fun to ride!
Awesome video Eric, probably one of the best edited ones you have ever made!!!
You even got a bit Steezy at the end of the jump! Nice work!!
the quality of this video is amazing! The drone shots and the music nice work!
In the past you said you would release less videos, but improve the quality. Nailed it. The the detail in the video is A grade.
As for adding the bridges, prefect. you to took a trail that we (me and little one could ride) Added a feature that is 'almost anyone can ride' , like the first bit of trail, and yet made a it a huge progression and confidence building feature. something I'd want to ride. great stuff
I, for one, am stoked you put in those bridges! Looks amazing, too! I definitely was skeptical before the bridges, as it was shaping up to be more challenging than I could handle. But I think making it so any and all skill levels can experience it was the right call in this case, and you did it SUPER well! 🤘
Thanks for the help!
I call the bridges "chicken bridge" on my trail. And sometimes they are removable which really helps for progression.
One heck of a build,Eric!
The use of the curved tree was fantastic. The editing on this one is phenomenal
Hey Dude this whale tail is sick i have never seen one with "bridges" now i really want to find one or maybe even build. Always loved the idea of whale tails but would never have the courage to jump a normal one so this is perfect👌👌👌👌
I get excited every time you release a new trail building video, you and berm peak and mark matthews are my favorites!!! Keep up the good work!
No way lol this can’t be real
Been trying to buy a ps5 for 3 years now lol
Can’t wait to see. AZ 🤘🏽
Always excited when you post a new video. That excitement doubled when it’s a trail build video. Love it
the music synced on the hammer hits Hahahahah perfect
What a beautiful video and masterful work, Eric. You put your heart and soul in everything you build. You are right, the feature is more complete with the bridges on.
Name wise, keeping it simple might be the way to go : Humpback tail.
Haha I totally thought the wale clip at the beginning was an ad 😂💀
Came home just in time from a bike ride, to watch this video
Great video as always! Name it Moby Bridge!!
Love the “BC” style of building 😎
“Hump Jump”
These videos make me so happy, thanks for your world class storytelling Eric; man of many talents.
My god that looks so fun! Those are your best kind of video where you build new trail features. Keep up the amazing work you are doing for this community!!!! Thank you!
nice and intune with the music at 5:20
That looks like soooo much fun to ride!!!
You build some very nice features. Good job. I’m sure ever stoke will love your whale tail.
6:52 to 7:06 Omg those drone shots with that music feel like a real movie and have a very calm vibe to them, Eric your drone filming talent in through the roof.
Hey Eric, love your videos. A name suggestion for the whale tail is “Big Bluey”. I think this is a good name because there are blue whales and down here in Australia when you swear a bit we call it ‘blue’ words. You might have sworn a bit building it and people riding it might swear because it’s gnarly!
Great name 👍 I like the Aussie part of it.
WOW. That is great work.
Eric, this video was a wonderful way to express the journey, thank you!
Eric, your feature building skills are awesome!
It probably would have been easier and more secure to just use a drill with long screws the same size as the nails you were trying to use. But I respect you for trying to do it the more "analog" way. Great job
The Cedar Whale for my name entry !
This is so smooth as it , awesome !!
Erik you made it look easy once you finally did it
beautiful video again Eric! And excellent work on that Huckback whale!
Can’t wait
Well, of you ever get sick of riding there is a lot of work for capable carpenters out there! 👍
Your build is awesome. Makes me wanna ride🤙🏻
This is such an awesome video, knocked it out of the park
Amazing job guys!
Love your videos and I love all that you do. Learn so much from all your hard work. Someday would love to ride with you!
Also I thought a good name for this whale tail should be “GRUNT” for all the grunt work you put into building this.
Keep up the great work and will be watching your channel as long as you keep making videos.
The bridges are a really good idea, I've how that makes it a feature most folks can ride and can use to progress their skill.
super cool man. well done. looks like it rides mint
That turned out unreal, so much better with the bridges 👍 Great video
Love this video! Great content and super well made! Beautiful!
Rokon Tail seems an obvious choice for a name, after the machine which gave you so much help.
WOW this looks like soo much fun! Nice video
Great video. That feature looks so fun at the end when bridges were added 😂 hard work for a great reward. Name it Whale of a time
Such a great video! Love all of the camera angles.
Being from the area, this makes me so excited for these trails! Great video
Predrilling can help drive larger nails in, using a smaller diameter bit than the nails.
Simple, name it Blue Namu. I think it could be rated as a blue feature since it can be rolled, and it's a reference to a type of whale. Namu for Namu the killer whale, the first captive trick performing whale. I would say it would be an appropriate name as your whale tail is one of a kind.
So sick!!!
That looks so nice
Eric that looks awesome with the brdges just means that more people are able to ride it, nice work 👍
