Thank you for sharing! What are your fertility rates with 1 Roo to 5 hens? Right now I have 7 hens and I only have I roo in with then as I didn't want them to be over bred. I have 3 extra roos. Should I try adding another?

Hi, Leanne! You’re very welcome! I honestly don’t see a large difference percentage wise if 1 Roo is with 5 or 8 hens. I have run up to 9 hens with one Roo, and still about an 80% fertility rate. Much has to do with the age of your birds, as well as how active they are with their breeding. If you aren’t selling hatching eggs, I don’t see the need to have tight ratios. I would also much rather have my hens be comfortable and have their feathers, even if it means my fertility goes down a bit. As long as I’m at about 75% fertility, that’s more than enough for my needs (as I focus more on hatching chicks). If less of my eggs hatch, that’s ok, I just set more at one time. If your group of 1:7 is getting along well as they are, and everyone looks healthy and happy, I wouldn’t add any additional males (again, unless your main goal is to sell hatching eggs to others). 😊 ~Aly
