So long sword is now kind of the same thing as opening man at arms in feudal except it’s an opening for castle age. It is comparable to opening with knights except you can produce 8 to 10 on the way up and get a small power spike. They still need to be transitioned away from agin later in castle though which puts them in an interesting place IMO going to make games even more interesting!
The fact they can even have a niche in Castle Age is incredible. I hope the pros keep exploring these possibilities. Some like Hera are more skeptical towards this, he believes Gambesons will be mostly useful in Imperial with Champions.
I’m my experience I can only get out about 2-4 maa on the way up. Clicking up takes away all of the resources you would use on them and then you need to research supplies and blacksmith techs too. I tend to just go with spears on the way up then a workshop to counter archers.
There was nothing crazy about the strategy this game though. He didn't even get the Caste Inf armor. So this play could've been accomplished at any point the past few years, except he gets the techs slightly faster and paid for Gambesons instead of Inf armor.
Hmm, this was a Longsword attack that simply could not have been replicated with Knights. By building the Men-at-Arms up during Feudal Age, and then upgrading to Longswords+Gambesons in Castle Age, Viper managed to get a slaughter of the Scout+Skirm+Archer army that Hearttt was using.
I was surprised that just 6 Longswords+Gambesons so convincingly crushed the Feudal Age Army, I don't think 3x Knights would have done the same (and 3x Knights probably would have taken longer to come out).
Exactly, many times the horse player gets first to Castle but is under immense pressure and can't pump Knights fast enough. This adds a layer of strategy no doubt.
I really appreciate that the militia line is finally viable in this game
This update has brought me more joy than entire games I have paid 70 dollars for lol
I love the teuton towers, in castle age they're like little immobile monks, heal your troops like crazy and counter archers beisdes!
"hErA sAiD hOrSeCoLlAr IsNt WoRtH iT" bro is literally questioning the goat. What viper says is law.
I've found that one set of sheep is always near the deer and the other is on their own. This hold true for about 80% of the arabia games I've played
Teutons feel amazing after this patch. good eco with strong units and siege. you can pretty much answer anything at all ages
The cheap farms are so convenient.
They only get gambesons LOL. You still die to the same civs.
@@majungasaurusaaaa skill issue
@@tiestofalljays No, they still die to every single CA civ and have an awful lack of mobility.
Siege Tower Champion play could be the new push strat, now that infantry are good again
Infantry are good for the first time, not "again" lol. I remember even in Age of Kings, they were only used as a counter to trash units.
I love Teutons :D
Biggest difference Gambesons makes is vs skirms. Go from 30 to 60 spears to die, basically invincible, skirms become completely useless to repel them.
And u ain't believe it as i said teutons S Tier now 11
What if you make mangonels instead of scorpions as soon as you build the SW? Wouldn't that have done a better job against xbows with your longsword escorts?
Dangerous for the poor infantry 11
Why do they never get town watch?
Idles TC from making villagers. @10:19 when he gets housed, it was actually a mistake because he wanted more vills, but decided to research wheelbarrow because he was housed.
Teutons
Imagine your Slav Infantry push on Arena with free gambesons.
Finally my money is paid off
teutons have generic infantry right
no. they have +1 melee armor in Castle Age and +2 in Imp
And conversion resistance, and the ability to fire arrow when garrisoned after crenelations.
I still can't see the advantage of going longswords vs open 3 stable knights, for example. Knights don't need upgrade, have better mobility, perform better in every aspect against every unit except pikes. It's nice to see infantry a little bit less pointless but I think nobody will use it in any serious game, unfortunately. Let's see what happens in KOTD...
It a timing attack, You can make a lot of maa, un the way of castle age, and have a little Window for do damage early, castle age
Feels like they are a raiding unit. Like cheap but slow knights :/
I feel like you couldve achieved the exact same with full knights, but better
Knights are more expensive. The cheapness of longswords, letting you get a lot of units out while still making eco is the key.
That would not be possible while making knights.
Late castle knights are better, but in the situation where you know you're castle before them, longswords can put pressure on quicker because you can build MAA on the way up, the biggest thing though is there's no fuedal age counter, a few spears can keep knights away until the mass builds up, but feudal archers can't do much without at least ballistics so you can cause so much idle time just running around
@@PartialViewmusic upgrading to longswords costs a lot. Supplies, gambeson, man at arms upgrade, longsword upgrade etc that's a lot of knights worth of resources.
@@PartialViewmusic knights need basically no upgrades to be useful, plus they can pick and choose their fights. The extra cost of knights is also offset by the fact that you need like 7 upgrades to make longswords effective. Knights are just better plus Teutons got conversion resist bonus too
@@jeroen92 Yes, gambesons and longswords together cost about 3-4 knights which isn't too much.
Furthermore, knights also need upgrades while costing more.
And, finally. And this is honestly the most important difference. You can make m@a in feudal and on the way up to castle allowing for that power spike that will give you the peace to start your boom while your enemy is preoccupied fighting your cheap longswords.
You need some time massing knights to get the amount that would achieve the same effect.
I called it as soon as I saw the patch notes, teutons infantry OP
A bit anti climatic, but ggwp
Did Hera take the spot for number 1?
for the algorithem :)
Hearts map was terrible
woodlines whats that lol
GG? jeez. Because he had no wood closeby? Why do pros not scout far ahead and make a fortification for wood. If you plan it ahead your game lasts longer.
I honestly think this new meta that gambeson is enabling is not good. It basically makes any other unit in the game not viable in castle age because either ineffective or too costly to gain an anvantage. Not even walling works against this... There is a reason why units have counters.
Just my opinion on the new patch, not a criticism on the game itself which I think was of course well played.
Infantry were not viable at all before though, you would see knights/xbows in 95% of online games...Longswords will be played more often in the beginning as people work out were they stand.
@@chris5240 I agree that we need something in between. But I think gambeson can be justified only with a much higher cost. Right now the most effective "counter" is knights. But if you do knights you are automatically dead because you will use much more gold and food than your opponent. At least this is what I'm experiencing in my games.
LOL at thinking this even makes infantry remotely viable most of the time. Remember Malians get that for free. And they were never lsword users to begin with.
Saying that +1 pierce armor makes "ANY OTHER UNIT IN THE GAME" non-viable in castle is really hyperbolic lol.
This just makes the militia line less of a joke post-feudal.
"I WOULDN'T do this in a Tournament..." That made me laugh out loud, Sir! 🤣 Adaptability is a very important trait for AoE2 - and life! 👍🤗
Expecting a short game? Don't get HORSECOLLAR. That's the new pro way...
