Thanks bobby awesome greatly appreciate your help and response
Thanks so much i think the 500 sp is 2505 lbs
Just got my little Fiat set up for towing. I have towed a vehicle on a tow dolly but never flat tow. My owners manual says to leave the key in the ignition when towing. There is no steering wheel lock so why leave the key in the ignition? Is that necessary?
To be precise it’s fiat 500 sp with blue ox 2800 base plate and 4330 tow bar . Do we need braking mechanism for this little vehicles in Canada
Good morning bobby , thanks for your help . We don’t require in canada as well braking system for vehicle under 3000lbs .i have one more question for connecting your 7 pin cable to fiat what kind of wiring harness kit do i need .my car is 2012 fiat sport (manual ) non turbo .thanks
Again, eTrailer would be a good resource, but also available on Amazon. Don’t know if you watched the videos on the flat towing set-up on my 2012 POP, but those would be very helpful for you. Part 1 shows the electrical install. I chose not to tap into the Fiat’s lighting system, which allows me to tow with the ignition turned off and no battery drain. Part 2 shows the complete baseplate install.

Good.morning bobby , what wiring kit do I need for towing fiat behind my Rv i am getting my base plate and blu ox tow bar soon . Very new to this topic . Also ne more question do i need brake kit for it ( the car is manual )
Hello. You will need Canadian regulations for requirements for a supplemental braking system. This may vary by province. In the US it varies by state. In the states that I travel, you don’t need it if the car is less than 2,500 lbs (Fiat POP is @2,200lbs). If you need supplemental braking, it will affect the wiring kit required. eTrailer.com is the best source for this info. Good luck!
Thanks for doing this video. I just ran into a guy in an RV park who has an orange fiat that he flat tows and loves . It looks like a fun car. I went to fiat website and all listed are automatics. Isn’t yours a standard transmission? What year is it? How easy/ difficult is it to get service on your fiat? And finally, how much did it cost you to get it set up to fiat tow or did you do it all yourself?
Yes, it is a fun car to drive! You will need a stick shift to flat tow. Mine is a 2012. Not difficult to get serviced, although I haven’t needed much on this one yet. I put on my base plate myself, and put in a wiring kit that bypasses your car wiring, so you don’t have to modify that. Everything came from etrailer.com and total cost was @$1,700 if I recall. UA-cam showed you how to do everything. I put links below the video for all this which you should see if you pull up this video on a computer. Good luck!
@@bobbycandtherv Thank you!
Do you have to turn your key on when you tow your Fiat 500? The manual says it's required but I've heard that most don't. Thanks
No you do not on my 2012. And you don’t leave the key in the ignition because the steering wheel does not lock. Mine is a stick.
I may have missed it, but what brand of tow bar, base plate, and wiring system did you use for your Fiat? We recently purchased a Fiat 500 to tow. Thank you for sharing this video, very informative!
I bought a Blue Ox Alpha tow bar, and a Blue Ox baseplate (there are different ones for a Sport, Pop or Abarth models- Check eTrailer for specifics, but order from a Blue Ox dealer). Additionally, I used a Blue Ox build and socket wiring kit. I am shooting another video on a complete flat tow installation in a 2012 Fiat 500 Pop, but it is delayed because I am waiting for a baseplate. They are currently out of stock due to pandemic issues. Stay tuned!
Sorry “Bulb and Socket” wiring kit.
Thank you for the video. I should be receiving my class A motorhome this month, and I have been looking for a toad. The 500 is one of the cars I'm considering. What do you think of the reliability of a Fiat? When you "flat tow", does it accumulate miles on the odometer? Thanks again.
Glad you enjoyed it! The Fiat 500 makes a perfect Toad. No, it does not accumulate miles because the key is off and the steering wheel does not lock. Make sure it is in neutral with the brake off and just hook it up and go! If you use the Blue Ox bulb and socket kit for your tail lights, they are powered by your motor homes wiring connection. In terms of reliability, I had mine for @3years with no issues. Unfortunately, I recently was in an accident and had to replace it. I found another one, and my next video will show the complete process on how to set up a Fiat 500 to flat tow. I’m just waiting on the baseplate now. Stay tuned!
@@bobbycandtherv Thank you, I hope you were OK in the collision. I'm shopping for a 500, but the prices have gone up on all cars.
@@agm6095 Thank you. Actually. I totaled it, but walked away a little sore but ok. The responsive steering helped me to avoid a collision with another vehicle. I ran it into a ditch. It was totaled b/c it was a 2012.
Does it rack up the miles on the Fiat?
Nope. That’s because the ignition is off, and the steering wheel does not lock. Also means it won’t drain your battery. Some Ford Focus models operate the same way.
When I got my Fiat 500 I spoke to Fiat thru their site. They said absolutely do not flat tow my 500. I could irreparably damage the car. So I don’t. I carry it on a car trailer.
Is it a manual transmission? You can’t tow automatics. What year is your Fiat 500?

Hi, do you notice a difference in the time it takes to stop (hit the brakes) while you are flat towing with the additional weight? I will be flat towing a 2600 lb car and do not have a braking system, wondering if it is absolutely necessary in a car that weights so little.
Allison, I believe 2,500 lbs is the maximum in some states to tow a car without a brake controller. It is regulated state by state. In my case, with my Mercedes Sprinter I am able to use the gears in my transmission to slow down, which minimizes brake wear. I haven’t noticed any great difficulty pulling the car or stopping the car. Mine weighs about 2,200 lbs.
@@bobbycandtherv Ok I see, here in Texas the max towed vehicle weight is 4500 lbs. Quick search and I found a website with laws for flat towing by state. Some have 1500 lbs max, I guess I will avoid those states.
