One of the best centre backs of all time. If he had been Brazilian or Italian he would’ve been acknowledged as such and easily made their national teams. God bless Paul McGrath
So glad I witnessed Mcgrath play for the villa 🙌 also Bosnich was absolutely brilliant too, I was in the trinity when he saved a shot with his legs in mid air against Coventry after a deflection and had a great view of it, still one of the most amazing saves I've ever seen
An excellent Gk,but I remember in 1995,with Klinsmann for Spurs just waiting to pounce on a through Ball, but Paul McGrath ready to take care of it& he came rushing out jumped up and cracked Yurgen right on the Jaw with his& K/O straight away..He certainly cleaned his clock!
I was eleven years old at the time. We just moved to the states a month before the World Cup. We had tickets to the Italy and Mexico match. My mother wanted to get a head start to Orlando and take us boys to Universal and Disney while my father would meet up with us after. 28 years later and I still have not forgiven her.
@@bk1147 Me too. Sat behind some clueless Italian Americans way up in the gods behind our goal, first half. Did you go the the party afterwards? Fucking brilliant, all free and everybody who was anybody from Ireland was there. The whole team, Eamon Coghlan, Dick Spring, Albert Reynolds. Chatted to Gary Kelly for ages, being a Leeds fan, and Big Jack was a gentleman. Nearly forgot, Larry Mullin bought our group a round of drinks and stayed for a chat.
@@johnny545 :) The shame is that Jones' first couple of seasons in the MU first team, and his breakthrough into the England team, really did promise much.
Back in around 1993-4, Paul McGrath used to go "walkabout", where he didn't turn up at Villa Park. On one such occasion, he'd been missing for 2 weeks. Anyway, me and 2 lady friends were on Broad Street one Wednesday night/Thursday morning around 4am, because we'd been to Snobs and were told there was an all night chippy on Broad Street . We couldn't find the chippy and everything including the clubs were now closed .Then a door opens and Mark Bosnich and Paul exit in to the street. The area is dead due to it being mid week, so we were pretty much the only people around. Paul invites my lady friends back to (wherever, Mark's probably) but they declined. So Paul and Mark crossed the road and got into Mark's Rover Sterling and drove off. I was gobsmacked, not because I met them, but that Mark had a Rover Sterling which just seemed at odds with what a footballer would own.
Correct. And this is the point i keep forgetting to make. Paul McGrath played against a lot of quality in a decent Ireland side, but one who were often outgunned! Except for him,he never looked out of his depth or outclassed,he had that ability to look in control and the opposition knew it& were fully aware..But I just don't think he was!!
'its all about getting there for us' and therein lies the irish problem, happy to make up the numbers for a few jars and some craic but not there to compete.
it’s mad that people are pretending van dijk is the best ever but don’t even kno McGrath’s name... you aren’t a football fan if van dijks in your top 20

God is love ❤

The most natural reader of a game, villa fans will forever love this man!
And derby fans he was brilliant with us
My one and only footballing hero. Simply the greatest centre half in the world. Played for my beloved Villa. Best player they ever signed
Needs to be inducted into the Premier League Hall Of Fame 😊
Good call actually....seems to be v few Players of the earlier premiership years inducted so far
@Paul Middleton good man yourself
@Paul Middleton ah fair enough. My thin skin letting me down again!

Any club should have him as their defence coach. Absolutely brilliant
Haha come on now
When Ferguson was selling Paul he made sure Liverpool wouldn't buy him
@@danhasset Is that true?
He beat Italy on his own in New York in 1994. Every ball that came into our half ... BOOM! ... back out. Paul McGrath.
One of the best days of my life was in Giants Stadium watching the best defender that I have ever seen!

As a Villa fan I love Paul McGrath but his performance v Italy in the 1994 world cup was extraordinary.
Incredible player, comfortably the best centre half I’ve seen in my time as a United fan(53yrs old).
When i first started supporting united in 85 as a child he was one of my favorite players along with robbo and mark hughes
Phenomenal player. Best of all time in his position.
He’s just a lovely human being. Who was also a class footballer!
I couldn't agree more best central defender I ever saw in a villa shirt !
As good as any Centre half you wish to name and i’ve been watching footy for nearly 50 years.
I met him yesterday, a lifetime highlight. Lovely bloke and incredible player!

Beast! Big, strong footballer. Proper player. Players player.
Bosnich great to listen to... Good football insight
Absolutely the greatest Irish players ever and such a gentleman, outstanding footballer, incredible defender.
A brilliant centre half and a class midfielder!

Wow,and it's funny the things u notice and remember! You should have been glad the ladies didn't take up his offer!😂
The best reader of a game EVER.
Rolls Royce of a player. Ooh ahh Pal McGrath!
Great great player x
One of The Best To Ever wear The Irish Jersey 💚
Knackered knees and a big a big back pocket to put a striker in⚽
Legend!
What a fantastic compliment
No doubt about it.
Headline says Marco van basten was waiting outside the dressing room. Bosnich never even mentioned him..
Part 2 to come?
Paul McGrath. God.
Mcgrath was a beast of a defender 👍
He could play in his overcoat and slippers and still put people in his pocket.
You got that right!
Best Irish player ever...
Wish we could have had players like Paul for our team northern Ireland
Definitely top 5. Have to throw in Keane, Brady, whealan, maybe Irwin
Irish Legend.
The Rolls-Royce of defenders.
Best footballer ever. Bozzy was quality too, other than those kicks ☺️
Best defender I have seen
Class act. Up there with barsei and maldin

Van Basten does no strike me as the sort of guy that would hang about waiting on other players tops 😀
@Liam Van Basten operated on a much higher level than Paul mcgrath lol
Turns out Van Basten wasn't waiting to swap shirts then??
Gullit and Rijkaard
People bang on about Virgil Van Djyk……he wasn’t a patch on big Paul
Irelands best ever player
Beashhhht of a man
Thats why i have him centre.
Played mostly centre mid for Ireland
I like the way the Irish are first

D
dude was drunk trained one day a week and still dominated.
He trained a lot more than one day a week but he didn't join in with the normal first team training. He did separate stuff because of his knees.
God.
I won't have Paul be my drinking buddy, he would overdrink me and left me in a pub to cry😂
Pity about the alcohol
Super player ..
He was crippled with social anxiety disorder, that man had a tough upbringing growing up
We still call him God
