After hearing so many stories about Keane for years from so many of his ex team mates I’ve come to the conclusion that perhaps the greatest thing he possessed was not only his amazing talent as a player but the effect he had on his fellow team mates. They practically worshipped him. They knew he had their back and it made them better. It made them believe. It gave them confidence. The confidence you need to do great things - and great things they did. He was that player. They could really do with one of those players right now. Unfortunately they don’t come around too often.

He was the best midfielder in possibly the best midfield in premier league history and for a period of time Europe. He was the engine and catalyst for the team from around '96 onwards. He couldn't pass like Beckham or have the skills of Scholes or Beckham but was the best of all four, in fact between 97 and 2004 he was undoubtedly United's best player. He had a technique and playing style and positional awareness that was so effective, he drove the team on when needed, kept it ticking over, rarely gave away possession and so calm in such a frantic league at that time. 8 or 9 out of 10 performances every single week. Unbelievable player.

Not exactly weak. Perhaps not on the same level that it has become currently but then again the game was more physical back then which adds a different dynamic. Ferdinand, Terry, Van Nistelrooy, Rooney, Ronaldo, Henry, Pires, Bergkamp, Hasselbaink, Drogba, Makelele, Beckham, Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard, Giggs, Veron…The list goes on. Hardly weak. The Italian and Spanish leagues were also very strong during this period but there is no doubt The Premier League was a damn strong league back in late 90s early 2000s onwards.

Any top team in Europe would have gladly taken him on their books. Veron, a gift of a player couldn’t get in the centre kid because of Keane’s presence and Veron was a top performer in the Italian league when it was near its pinnacle. @@paulhornsey-pennell1931 from what I've seen of Keane, what did the other player do? Yeah he was a brawler, a hooligan if you will, and wasn't above putting someone in their place if he felt they needed it, and yes he played hard, more so than most of the ballerinas on the pitch today, but he was too much of a team player to just say 'that's a good player I'm going to break his leg' I haven't read his bio but I bet there was a 'for this action' included in that statement because he knew that red card meant he wasn't out there helping his mates. How long was he captain under Ferguson? He was good but it was this specific attitude as to why he held it for as long as he did. After bullet tooth Tony and a French karate kick I don't think Ferguson would have tolerated a thug on the pitch. Ferguson understood him.

If you lived through that era of premiership football you wouldn't question who was the best player because this guy Keane got the best of whoever he came up against and in 99 he had reached his prime and took over one of footballs greatest midfield line in Davids Zidane and dechamps in turin after going 2 0 down in 10 minutes.Best midfielder in premier league history with second in my mind the Liverpool legend gerrard and to make things better gerrard rated himself second ahead of scholes,Vieria, lampard and Macalele and simply said Keane The best.He played against keane in 05/06 season twice.Keane who nearing the end still came out on top in old traford and after 60 minutes in anfield with the score 0-0 they both were pretty even that day.He was one of the greatest leaders because he led by example and got all others around him to play better.Keane was so good at reading a game, passing through the gaps from midfield to fowards, dictating the pace, tackling,he scored 93 goals in his career also.An absolute legend that will be remembered if humans are still alive in 2000 years. He reminds me of Bill Russell in basketball whose one of the best ever and won 11 championships and once said I can't say whose the greatest basketball player ever but thr way i play our team wins.

I don’t know if Rio is saying that just to be more entertaining but that is how great leaders are. He can’t go around shouting all the time, he would be totally physically abs emotionally spent. In order to have that intensity in the game you need to have some downtime where you focus and centre yourself. People try to paint him like he was always aggressive but I think people now see that he is loud abs direct when he needs to be because he can’t let things slide but otherwise he is chilled out.

When we talk about the intangibles in sports, roy keane is what we mean. Yes, everyone has two arms and two legs and everyone can run and be competitive but he was smth else, his obsession and drive was almost autistic. He was completely devoid of skill and flair, i don't want to say he was one dimensional, he was a great passer of the ball but you could not say he was graceful on the ball. He was beyond all of that though, he had a desire to win that went beyond the skills required to win, he willed himself into victory, you can never win against someone who is willing to break his bones every single time he gets in that pitch

we can be friendly and relaxed, then seconds later if someone is pushing us or someone we care about we can be Rageing at someone then calm again seconds later after that and on good terms all within a few seconds or a minute or two depending on what's going on and how people are with us, I've seen it over and over again all my life, it's not just Mr Keane it's a lot of us Celts are like that in the way we are

But Fergie was behind him with absolute authority. Roy Keane could not find same success either in Ireland national team or as a manager by himself.
