Overplaying isn't really a thing when your jamming by yourself... although I do agree that the song itself did not break the cymbal, I think you may forget Dave Grohl was not "properly trained" or much taught how to play any instrument and thus using "proper techniques" wouldn't really recreate Dave's playing.
@@danny4081 but there are good ways and bad ways to treat gear, as well as your body. Improper technique will cause serious issues down the line. No doubt he is having a good time, but the lack of technique just cost him upwards of $200-$500, potentially even more. For the sake of the gear, it’s important to treat it with respect and truly learn how to make it work for you rather than playing in ways that can damage it, or your arms, wrist, back or any other potential spot you could hurt permanently.

Each cymbal and drum has a ton of different sounds depending on how hard you hit it, and the little accents and variations and even mistakes are how you sound more like a drummer and less like a robot.

A trained ear would be able to spot that over strained cymbal in half a bar. Taylor Hawkins wasn't especially known for breaking kit. I wonder why that is? ;)
Take a second to think about the greatest drummers ever, guys like Dave Lombardo, Terry Bozzio, John Bonham, Mike Portnoy, Neil Peart, even modern drummers like Baard Kolstad and Tomas Haake all hit really goddamn hard. Of course they only play that way when it's tasteful, but it's imo ridiculous to say that in the video the playing wasn't tasteful or fitting for the song.
I've played in a number of rock bands since my early 20s, and gig regularly in a rock covers band playing bars, weddings etc. Nothing incredible but I have worked with some proper musos over the years. The amount of grief I've had and continue to get for playing too loud is the bane of my playing career. I can still confidently say I do not hit anyway near as hard as this and if I did play this song, pretty sure I could achieve the power dynamics of it without doing this. You're really good dude. In my old band, our drummer used to use those titanium sticks (they're hollow in the middle, but there's a pretty thick layer of titanium) and he'd break them all the time. He broke cymbals all the time too. He was a good drummer, but he really only had one volume. And during the more quiet sections of our songs, when there wasn't supposed to be any drumming at all, he always hit his cymbals. It's like he couldn't not play. lol
I'm amazed at the fact that he broke with brute force a sheet of steel and somehow not break two pieces of thin wood, tho you should prolly hold back a bit, just an itty-bitty tiny bit with the strength to prevent the same for all the other cymbals
Wooden sticks are made to take the shock through the natural flexibility of the fibrous structure. Cymbals are made of a mix of copper based alloys. They vary from cymbal to cymbal. Cymbals are flexible too, but as they don’t have a fibrous structure, they become vulnerable from the stress created when vibrating. Proper technique would be to avoid over-stressing, which could be done by following the movement of the cymbal when hitting (kinda like pushing a swing when it moves away from you rather than before it makes its turn) or hitting it with lesser force. That being said, the thicker the cymbal, the stronger it is, and the more prone you are to breaking your stick instead. A guy I work for used to chew through drumsticks in a matter of days. So he kept getting thicker sticks. As he reached the thickest stick you could buy without luck he tried some non-wooden sticks with a reinforced aluminium core (might have been carbon fiber, I don’t remember exactly). He started playing and IT WORKED! THEY DIDN’T BREAK! But the drums and cymbals did. He ended up realizing that breaking sticks is a lot cheaper than breaking drumheads and cymbals.

As he reached the thickest stick you could buy without luck he tried some non-wooden sticks with a reinforced aluminium core (might have been carbon fiber, I don’t remember exactly). He started playing and IT WORKED! THEY DIDN’T BREAK! But the drums and cymbals did.
He ended up realizing that breaking sticks is a lot cheaper than breaking drumheads and cymbals.
