Let's chat, I wanna know which medicinal plants or fruits are you growing or planning on putting in on your homestead this year?
Maybe you can tell me if I have a black elder. It's a volunteer plant, gifted by the birds, so I don't know what it is. This beast has bumpy canes 1.5"" dia. in year 2 that grow about 8' tall in year 1, produces opposite leaf branches in mid April and dark purple, almost black flower clusters by the start of May in zone 4b-5 and produces prolific clusters of almost black berries on red stalks by late summer, a month before the dogwood berries are ripe. Leaves are green, small toothed and spear-shaped, curling and tender at this point. This is the 3rd year for the oldest cane and it has tender suckers at the root, it's branching out from ground level to tip, which I cut down to about 3.5' and on that one cane, it has about 10 fruit clusters that are an inch dia. already. While raking up last month, I broke off what looked like a dead stump, but it had a 1" long leafing bud, so I just propped it up in the dirt. That bud is now 3" long, so I planted the stick. What is this monster?!
So...I want to plant this bush...I live in area of Canadian Rockies where terrain varies widely & quickly within short distances... so right now I'm considered "high desert" 4a...and next year will be moving 15 minutes away to zone 3b which is more prairie-like (but still beautiful view of the Rockies-lol) Anyhow... I'm not going to plant until I move...it's very frustrating for me here as I'm from the east where you can just toss seeds anywhere & anything will grow...so everything is a trial..

just pruned elderberries, have 400 cuttings, will sell 200 and plant 200. Planting 800 Moringa trees, and 50 Sweet Wormwood. I have at least 20 other herbs. Switching from veggies to herbs on my farm

I just purchased this year some different types of elderberry York Adam Samyl Samdal and Marge. And 1 Aronia. Now learning about elderberries as I have the cuts potting for this season.

I love my elderberry just for show...the flowers last a while and the berries are pretty colors and birds love them!!! I am planting more this year from cuttings!!!!
My Elderberries are now starting their third year (sambucus nigra x 2) and in mid winter are only losing leaves now (we do have mild winters) They are HUGE, over 6 ft tall and this is now times, or a bit later in winter to cut back, especially older wood and male cuttings from younger, unneeded branches of which there are plenty. I had my first flowers last summer and this summer will have my first berries and really looking forward to that harvest and making juice, syrup and tinctures. They are not well known at all in my country, South Africa and I am looking forward to gifting some trees from my cuttings to family and friends

Great information! We want to put in elderberry this year; we also have seeds for comfrey, calendula,catnip and have garlic in the ground waiting for Spring. ~Heather
So glad you found it helpful! My garlic is snug under straw and about 6 inches of snow still. Calendula is another favorite. I don't have any comfrey on our place, thankfully my neighbor s are very willing to share. ;)

Yes, most sources were sold out for much of the year last year. I only envision them growing in popularity as more and more scientific research shows they do have true medicinal properties. Because they're shallow rooted you can definitely start them in a large container for their first year too. Can't wait to hear about your new homestead and property!

I am starting Sambuca Nigra seeds this winter in the refrigerator. I ordered from Israel last summer. Wish me luck moist paper towel sprinkled with cinnamon and inside plastic wrap. I am in zone 3 and they are perennial here SW of Thunder Bay, Ontario.
I retire very soon and have a bit of land in Ireland and intend to make a fantastic garden as I love gardening but I also like making home brew and hear that elderberry makes a great wine. I was out only last week picking blackberries for my first blackberry wine. I also looked out for elderberries but only found one small bush of them. I was surprise as I always thought they were quite abundant. Not so it seems in my area so intend to grow my own. If I remember right their is a tree in a paddock of mine that is elderberry so hope to proper gate it. Your info tells me to mix different breeds of the plant so I will try that.
Over the years ive been buying a couple of pounds of dried Elderberries at a time to use for making my own syrup. Over the last month people are buying them up like mad because of the virus and had actually bought out everything the sellers had for sale on Ebay. The sellers managed to find some more stock but the prices then skyrocketed to 55-60 dollars per pound ! I imagine that it wont take long before they once again clear out the sellers stock .
In doing some research it turns out that several other berries are also highly antiviral , not quite the same as elderberries but still quite highly antiviral. Over the years ive often heard of the anti-oxydent qualities of the berries but had not heard very much about their antiviral abilities until I started to actually look specifically for that info. It turns out that blueberries, cranberries , blackberries , raspberries, cherries, strawberries, gooseberries, currants, kiwis, aronia/chokeberries, pomegranites and many more are all super antiviral !
Knowing that at this point the supply of anything might get harder and harder to find as this goes along , I decided to plant as many berry bushes as I could find locally. Was able to find some people on Craigslist selling several year old elderberry bushes that have pretty large thick root systems , so I hopefully wont have to wait years to get some berries from them . Also managed to do the same with some currant bushes, the guy had inherited a property from his parents that had the whole back yard planted in black currants that were many years old . He didnt want the yard filled with currant bushes and was selling them off. Also found some Aronia's , Honeyberries and Gooseberries. Probably got them just in time as it probably wont be long before we end up in increasing state of lockdown orders.
Most AFFORDABLE ORGANIC DRIED ELDERBERRIES I found are from Konexcel / Pristine Nutri available on Amazon.
They come in 2 pounds bag. The price per pound is at least 30% below compared to all other brands. Elderberries have long shelf as they are dried so buying 2 pounds and saving money makes more sense.

Hey Stephanie, yes, after 3 years the canes don't produce much fruit and should be removed. Cut back the 3-year-old canes to the base of the plant.

I planted 12 blueberry plants this fall--3 early bearing, 3 mid season, and 3 late season. i was afraid they all had died but i finally see small buds on each one! although i do see a few places at the end of stems that look dead like you showed on your elderberries

I'll be doing a blueberry video soon, but you'll want to prune back the dead places on them the same as the elderberries. I'll have a blueberry care and pruning video soon.

i ordered an american elderberry and a york elderberry this year. it is scheduled to be delivered here to Minnesota in May. Are these varieties ok? pretty sure they said they were used for syrup and medicine... I knew to avoid red berries... just wondering if I can do with them what I would like to.

Hello, we have several wild elderberry bushes more like trees) along the edges of our forest. They grow wonderful, but we find the wild birds eat the berries while they're still green, and don't leave us any to harvest. Should be cover some of the bushes with bird netting early in the season. Leaving some bushes for the birds. We also have wild black berries, raspberries, and grapes. There are many areas nearby for picking wild blueberries as well. There are even natural bogs where if your timing is right you can gather wild cranberries.
Love to hear this! Foraging for fruit, fruit trees like mulberry, nut trees, mushrooms,wild onion, wild garlic and medicinals that you always have a free source of food and medicine that you might not grow on your property..
Yes, when the berries are green, use some netting over the portion you want to harvest for yourself. This works great on blueberries as well. We have wild black berries and the birds tend to leave the raspberries alone and we have enough grapes I don't have to net, but the blueberries and elderberries will have to be netted because those birds don't know how to share, they'll strip it bare in a day. :)

Can you plant elderberry in a large container
We ordered a Samdal and and Samyl elderberry (both Sambucas nigra) to arrive this spring. Doing bare root plants to stretch the homesteading dollars. Very reasonable at noursefarms.com in MA

I shared your video on my FB timeline, and my mother responded that they have wild elderberry on their property and I'm welcome to a couple! So excited! I will have to keep them in pots though, because we rent and I don't want to plant them in the ground here. How big a diameter pot would you suggest? THANKS!
Also, I already grow lavender, fennel, cilantro, sage, and oregano in the boxes my beau made for our deck. I also have aloe vera and a ton of various ferns, spider plants, and a Norfolk Island Pine inside the house. Looking forward to starting calendula (which I recently found out is one of my birth month flowers {October}). We took our fig tree to overwinter at my parents. We have a difficult time with keeping eucalyptus - we have to species - and they both don't appreciate how difficult it is to keep the humidity constant in the house over the winter months! My chamomile never wants to live either, but I'm not giving up!
That's exciting! For elderberries the first few years a pot is fine, I'd go as large as possible like a whiskey barrel planter, but as it matures it will limit the size and your harvest if it's not in the ground. But if you're getting them for free I'd totally try a few!
Wait until your plants sucker out into your grassy area.. Mine were planted three years ago. three sticks in a nice straight row. Last year they went crazy coming up out in the driveway and inside the fence, out into the grass. Then last summer it got so hot, no matter how much I watered, they wilted down, New growth in early morning was crispy by mid afternoon. My husband said it I continued my watering ( I was also watering grape vines and 17 crepe myrtles) I could drain our shallow well. So I prayed and prayed. About three weeks later it rained for almost two weeks. We had over 12" during that time. ..believe it or not Spring/Autumn came all at once. Fruit trees were confused, and my autumn jungle of perennial red salvia and little yellow sunflowers did not disappoint! Now my elderberries are coming up, not as many,,,yet.I Am thinking of moving some of them to full sun.
We'll mow around them to keep the suckers down, it works well with our raspberries and the blackberries. Glad you got your rain. We've had grapes for 12+ years and I've never had to water them thank goodness.
We have black elderberry that grows wild here in our town. I really want to take a clipping and see if it will grow. I am just not sure if it needs to be Dormant or not.
I live in zone 5 my wild elderberries are black..the time to take cutting here are between January and March..I took 11-cuttings from my own plants cut them into 9-inch intervals at a angle and stick them in a quart jar filling half way with fresh water out of direct sunlight.l now waiting to see if they root..I do have green on the nodules so the leaf is growing..it will take up to 8-weeks for roots to grow..Good Luck! I will never be without my elderberry which is our cold and flu medicine..
I recently purchased elderberry but discovered they are Sambucus canendesis, (Bob Gordon variety)not sambucus nigra. Will I still be able to get medicinal value from this variety?

Yes, Sambucus canadensis is considered American elderberry and it has medicinal values too, so you're good to go!

I had read that elderberry bushes grow over where water is in the ground. So, I was going to plant them in a soggy place on my property. Now I have to come up with a new spot. I hope deer don't like them!
Hi Patty, they're pretty shallow rooted but too much water and the roots may rot. Netting works really great on berry bushes to keep the deer (and especially the birds) away from the ripe berries so we can get them first.
Is there somewhere I can find information on growing elderberries in Arizona in the valley? I’m in Gilbert. Last time I tried growing them it was just too hot even tho I planted in a spot that had shade in the hottest part of the day. Any suggestions?
Diane Knickerbocker there’s an excellent YT channel called Weed ‘em & Reap they live in Arizona and do everything on their property.
You might want to look for the varieties from California as they are already acclimated to hot weather.

Yes, especially the first few years. Make sure it's a large container (they're shallow rooted) and the Sambucus Nigra is usually smaller and less apt to send out as many shoots.
I'd love to start elderberries, but I'd have to do them in a container or raised bed, as we rent our home currently. I'm not sure if the whole process is the same or what to watch out for that's different than planting in the ground?
For the first two years they'll be fine in a large container but after that, they'd need to be in the ground to really grow. Blueberries are better suited to containers long term than elderberries.

I have 5 Elderberry plants and last year (year 4) I got another variety grow next to the mother plant. It seems like it is the wild variety, not the dark purple fruit variety. Do you know why this happened? I have cut the wild plant down to the ground once knew it wasn't the same as the mother plant.
Perhaps they used a different root stock and grafted the purple varieties, so any shoots it sends off from the root stock could be another variety. With fruit trees they'll often graft onto hardy root stock and you need to remove those shoots. I'm not positive that's what's happened with yours but my best guess.
Know a good store to order seedlings or seeds from for medicinal elderberry bushes? My nutritionist has had great success with it with his diabetes clients, and I'm one of them. So this video and topic is so very timely!

Are they different varieties? They won't cross pollinate if they're the same variety. They can be planted together but if they're not different varieties within the same species they won't pollinate one another

I had 6 bushes that I had grow very tall, then out of nowhere they just wilted and died! Im so SAD!! any advice for next time... like as soon as my snow melts!!!

I’m interested in planting elderberries, but I heard that they’re dangerous to dogs until the fruit is ripe. How often does unripe fruit fall? Is it better to avoid this plant if you have dogs or have to plant it where’s dogs may come into contact with it?
Most of the time unripe berries don't fall, ripe fruit falls when it's nearing more overripe. Unripe elderberries aren't recommended for humans either. It grows wild in many parts of the country and I've not heard of many reports with issues. If you think your dog will eat it you can net it or plant it away from where they'll be. You could ask your vet, I haven't really studied up on this with dogs.
