    Watch this video before you take your Porsche out for a drive again. If you ever find yourself stranded with a Porsche Carrera, Boxster or Cayman that won't start, this video will help you figure out the issue and maybe even get you back on the road to home or the shop to get it fixed.

    If you Porsche won't start it could be the ignition switch, or it could be just a bad battery. Your Porsche Carrera Boxster Cayman could have a bad clutch safety switch, or it could be a bad starter motor relay that is stopping you from getting your car running. The problem could even be a bad Crank Position Sensor CPS or a failed starter motor itself. These are all things that could be an issue in your Porsche if you are not able to start it.
    Step 1: Wiggle the key in the ignition switch a little bit and then try and start the car. If this works, then you need to replace your plastic switch about a $10 USD part.
    Step 2: Move the steering wheel back and forth to make sure it's not causing an issue.
    Step 3: Test your car battery upfront, you should have 12.5 volts or there about to start the car. If you find that your battery doesn't have a full 12 volts then you will need to replace it. Plan on spending $150 plus USD.
    Step 4: If you have a TIP or Auto transmission try moving the gear shifter back and forth, even be a bit aggressive with pushing it into PARK and DOWN into DRIVE.
    If you have a manual transmission, make sure you're depressing the clutch peddle before you try and turn the key.
    Step 5: Check your fuses, look at ROW B Fuse 8 then in ROW C Fuse 1 and 2 then 4.
    Step 6: If you have a manual transmission car, jump your clutch safety switch under the dash and see if this gets you going. If it does, you need to replace the little plastic switch, or just use and leave the jumper wire in there. With the jumper left in you will no longer have to push down the clutch to start your Porsche Boxster 986 Cayman 987 or Porsche Carrera 911 996 997.
    Step 7: Next check the starter motor relay in the back of the Porsche, it's the first one by the long fuse. Pull the relay and use the jumper wire you made and connect it to pins 30 and 87. If you car now starts you will need a new relay which is cheap about $15 USD or so. You can drive the car home or to the shop with he relay jumper. If you still can't get the car started it could be you have a dead starter which could cost you $250 to $500 USD.
    Step 8: Get into the car and watch the tach needle as you try and start the car. It should lift off the 0 mark on the tach just a little bit when you turn the key. If it doesn't move while turning the key then the issue of your Porsche Boxster 986 or Porsche Cayman 987 or Porsche Carrera 911 996 997 no start is the Crank Position Sensor which is located between the engine and transmission halfway up. If it does move, then keep looking for the issue. Normally this happens when in the morning you can start the car just fine, but after the car gets warmed up it won't start. Let the car cool off and if it's the CPS the car will start back up.
    Step 9: If none of this help get your car started, then you have an issue with the alarm or immobilizer under the seat. This means sending in the alarm box, the ECU box, and your key to have them fixed and repaired.

    You can bypass the clutch pedal switch by using a fuse

    Great info! This exact same thing happened to me with my boxster years ago and was in fact the clutch safety switch. I ended up just leaving the jumper, it was kind of nice not having to depress the clutch when starting. Not as safe, I know, but I liked it that way.

      I agree my 1967 Porsche doesn't have the clutch safety switch and it was a big change driving the Boxster to always push in the clutch to start it up. Thanks for watching, let me know if you have ideas for future videos.

    Do not assume that just because your battery reads 12.5-ish volts that it's good. I can tie two 9v batteries together into one 18V battery and it couldn't hope to turn any car over but would more than pass this test. Cranking amps matter too. In my experience, 99% of the time a battery has reached end of life, it will still take a charge and read north of 12V... it isn't until you *put a load on it* that it shows its health.
    Your average brick and mortar auto parts store has a proper automotive battery charger/tester with proper load testing that you can use for free.

    Great Job with the steps to follow, if stranded. I am New to owning a Porsche, Boxster 986. I could not refuse the selling price from the previous owner. Always wanted to have a Porsche growing up. The problem I am having for the first time is, I turn the key and the car turns over but does not start. In this video, your car does not turnover, it just clicks. Should I follow your steps and do you have other steps I should follow? I await your reply, appreciate all you do with your instructionals. I plan to follow you closely and most definitely will support the 986 Brotherhood.

    Hi Brian, that was very helpful and I wonder you would please give me some advise please,
    I have a 986/2.5/1998 manual.......having problem started with remote fob stopped communicating with the car, however I did tried all sort of trial and error copied from the forums but unfortunately I am not getting in the right direction.
    First of all, I am a DIY enthusiastic person who is been struggling with the remote control is not communicating with the car, suddenly stopped, so I am using the key to open/close and start,
    problem as I open I have to start under 20 seconds, otherwise is a panic for everyone!!blasting Alarm.
    My question, recently we did a Durometric;
    1. 14 RIGHT DOOR SECURED, BUT NOT LOCKED
    2. 42 WRONG KEY OR WRONG TRANSPONDER PILL
    3. 33 PASSENGER COMPARTMENT MONITORING DENSOR, LONG-TEST FAULT
    I also noticed, when I lock with the key, the inner security (central locking) button RED light on
    also the wing mirror heater light (orange) is working 24/7 it also kills the battery.
    * So temporarily, I have dis-connected the alarm siren.
    * I have got the second Fob, but the PILL is out of programme and the key does not start engine only open doors.
    * Radio/Becker CDR21 also stop working.
    Is the fault connected to No.3, code 33?
    Will I able to programme the PILL my self? because it is going to be very expensive to do,
    The car is a right hand drive.
    I greatly appreciate your help.......please please.

    Just installed a new IMS bearing in my 2000 Boxster S. Also replaced expansion tank, water pump and thermostat while I had it all open. Put it back together and it cranks but won't start! Had the battery disconnected the whole time. Alarm system is working, radio code needs resetting. OBDII says P0343 Camshaft position (CMP-) sensor A, bank 1 - high input. Any suggestions?

      @@ArrowheadGarage Hi Brian, Thanks for responding, none of these steps were successful unfortunately. Checked all the fuses as well. Switched the relays for fuel pump. The engine cranks and cranks but won't fire. Although it did give a very weak firing twice, but so weak I'm not even sure. I had the entire exhaust system out and then put back in while doing the IMS bearing, also I forgot to mention new clutch and RMS. Passenger side is seeping a little fuel from the manifold, buy not from the gasket, from 2 of the pipes right where they join the mounting plate. Huh, weird right? I'm guessing the fuel pump is working just no spark. When cranking the tach moves up slightly. Any thoughts?

    That's going to be very painful! I just tried with the second key (not in use due to same problem)
    removed the PILL from the working Flashing Fob, and no circuit in the plastic casing I inserted this PILL, but the engine starts and work, in other way the circuit has nothing to do with the immobiliser, Am I correct? or it has connected with the passenger side movement sensor up on the roof? as mentioned before there was a Durometric code obtained last week;
    **Code 42 Wrong key or Wrong Transponder PILL?
    **Code 33 Passenger Compartment Monitoring Sensor, long -test Fault.
    I am absolutely confused......

    Hi guys im Tony from the uk this is a very useful video i had this issue in my 2001 996 tiptronic cabriolet and it turned out to be my alarm ecu that had got wet from blocked roof drains that had flooded the rear passenger floor and soaked the ecu underneath the passenger seat a common issue apparently so i dried the carpets took out the ecu and found green corrosion so i cleaned the circuit board and plugs with wd40 took it in the house and put it on the radiator over night to try and dry it off the next day put it back on and the car started fine and drives as normal so far so good so give that try before spending a fortune on a new alarm and immobiliser ecu it mite save you a fortune i did notice that when i unlocked the car the door curtesy lights did not come on until the ecu was working correctly so that might be sign that your issue might be the ecu so check and see if your carpet is wet if so check your ecu it only seems to be on the cabriolets though as the roof drains get blocked and need cleaning they are behind the rear wheel arch cover and will be full of mud so clean them out regular if the ecu works put your ecu in zip lock plastic bag it will help keep the ecu dry and the issue returning a bit ugly but better than the cost of a new ecu as you will need to buy an ecu and key alarm fob and have to pay them to be reprogrammed in the uk costs around £450 for ecu £180 for key fob and around £100 for a Porsche engineer to program not sure about US prices hope this helps anyone

      I believe some aftermarket companies sell a watertight case/cover for the ECU which would be worth the investment over replacing the whole unit.

      Most likely the cable from the alternator / starter.
      99660701903 or 99660701901 is what you need to replace. The 03 is for newer 996, the 01 for 98-02 models.
      Very common and often misdiagnosed as faulty starter motor

I replace the relay with a new one and everything is still the same way no crank no....... My friend checked power to the switch which we have.... Power to the starter you hear the fuel pump kick on when you turn switch.... So all that seems good I know the starter is not jammed up cuz the the car did crank...... Update today.... I got to the immobilizer under the driver seat and I checked the fuse in it. the fuse looked good BUY I replaced it anyways and the car still won't start BUT I noticed that the immobilizer was changed before there is a company name on there and writing that it was replaced or rebuilt in 2017... I'm trying to get ahold of those people on the number for info..ALSO I check fuses on the driver side kick panel... And the E1 fuse in the fifth column is popped ... I replaced it with another 7.5 and it popped again then I replaced it with a number 10 fuse and that also popped everytime I try to start the car or maybe every time I reconnect the battery plus I keep taking off the negative terminal before I replace the fuse...... So I guess something in the E1 fuse box is the problem ?
      Because the fuse keeps popping ?
