the last bit with Joe reflecting on the band and what they achieved ( or tried to achieve) bought tears to my eyes..12 years since his death and still miss him..RIP Joe Strummer..Punk Warlord
That interview is from "The Clash: Westway To The World" and at the very end that one while Joe is reflecting on his regrets (they all have a few) about their break up and how he shouldn't have messed with the chemistry of the band by firing Mick he turns away like he's about to cry because talking about it starts to upset him. He definitely felt bad about how it all ended and that was many years later too that it still bothered him. Paul ends the film saying "If I could do it all over again,I wouldn't change anything,I think it's fine as it is.We did our job and that's the story,we were together and now we're gone and that's it and that suits me fine" Mick and Joe played together on stage 3 weeks before he passed away. It was their first time on stage together since The US Festival in 1983 so who knows maybe they'd have reunited for a concert or album. It's good to see Mick,Paul & Topper in this sitting together talking,smiling and I think if Joe were alive for this he'd be sitting right their with them doing the same.

@@markyncole I could care less if any other band reformed. Even possibly the Pistols. But the Clash deserved a second crack of the whip. A second coming. They were the Four Horsemen. Joe turning away speak volumes. Clash Live Matters.

The Clash are still my favourite punk band of all time, never afraid to experiment or do something different, way ahead of their time on so many levels. truly original in every sense of the word. Joe's death was such a loss to the world of music, so many people miss him, myself included.
Man, they were just a rock band...a damn good rock band.

God, I miss Joe Strummer. What an inspirational person he was?
You can see the passion and the seriousness in Joe's words and expressions. It's so impressing and inspiring.
There is such sadness and regret in Joe's voice and in his body language when he talks about The Clash.
I really think he always wanted to get back together with Mick, Paul and Topper. It just never happened...

Yeah, it probably would have happened some time in '03, if not for Joe's sudden passing just before Christmas in '02.

I was fortunate enough to see The Clash on Oct. 15th 1982 at Kent State University, of all places! A life changing event for me! Then in the 80's, I saw BAD twice. Once in LA in The Roxy ( I think... ) and then again in NYC at the Roseland Ballroom in '89. Both were great shows, but nothing like seeing The Clash!
George Klein lucky person , I honestly believe I was born in the wrong generation as a "90s kid" I hate modern music and modern trends when really I should be enjoying them but one day I wish to see the sex pistols live or carbon silicon (mick joneses band) just too get a feel for what the atmosphere was like ! It makes me sad too see modern musicians walk off stage when they get a water bottle thrown at them because back in the 70s bands the clash just played through it I even saw a video where joe and mick where helping fans sneak in too one of their gigs .
Came here for insight on the album, left with a philosophical lesson.

Really glad that Topper picked out 'Car Jamming', I always though that was a really underrated song and always one of my favourites.
It's certainly the best song on CR .
I always get so sad when I watch these interviews. My hero is gone. I'm so glad he found his second wind with the Mescaleros at least, if not a reformation of The Clash.
Can you imagine if they had reformed. The Pistols comeback was something but the Clash would have been something to behold. The first performance would be them stood on stage waiting for 4 hours while half the crowd had their jaws on the floor and th the rest just cheered until the whole venue collapsed into a black hole. The first beat and first note everyone would just pass out. Children would look on as grown men cried. The Clash were successful but they also got short changed in many ways especially Joe himself. Paul is always a steady rock. Clash Live Matters.
It's a good job that Joe was asked about all that stuff back in 2000, isn't it? Not only was it used in Westway to the World, but also the Julien Temple documentary and now this.
Agree with you Joe.... Straight to Hell is one of the best you ever wrote and sang. Great prose, great irony, great imagery, haunting sound. And I am blessed to have heard it live, twice...
that is good one. i always liked "bank robber" too as far as lesser known hits for the clash. ..........and "charlie don't surf" - damn, almost forgot that one....... and "train in vain" - love that one too!

That was INCREDIBLE. For those who grew up on these albums our destiny was changed forever as a result.
Maybe this is sacrilege but if the Clash had stayed or gotten back together then they would just be one more group of old farts like The Stones, or U2 that have been on the stage too long, the thing that makes them special is a fantastic body of work made in a compressed period of time that is now (especially since Joe died) ageless.
+omfug - I am so afraid that I would agree with you if not for the ideal that this band got together for uniquely different reasons, I think. Look at the projects that followed - not so far removed from what they were, during those prolific years - that were progressively still in their own lane, don't you think? I never stopped liking them and even found songs on "Cut The Crap" that I liked, LOL!

On Cut the Crap album the only original members tha participated where Joe and Paul,Mick was kicked out from the band and so was Topper due to his smack addiction,so it's fair that they didn't include it in this documentary

Only Joe appears on the album. It was entirely produced by Bernie Rhodes with synthesizers, samples and a drum machine.
@@beavis4play I’ve heard Joe talk about it twice. Once about how when it came out he didn’t even know it was in stores yet but he saw it in a record shop. One listen and I knew we were finished, he remarked. Years later he was asked about it and if he liked any of the songs, he said both North and South and This is England turned out well.

Lucky enough to see them live at Deeside Leisure Center North Wales U.K.
, excellent guess it's a bit sad they didn't take time out and continue but then the spirit of their music came from urgency and would they suit longevity ? They gave out so much all quality in that short time it's a shame they weren't rewarded more and continue or not they're work will be historic and call to every generation to come ! !

If you guys want more of Joe Strummer and the clash, The clash mark 2 is also very good. Songs i recommend are 'In The Pouring Rain', 'Sex Mad War',' Are you ready' , 'Ammunition' and 'We Are The Clash.'
Ammunition is ok tbh, i'll give you that, We Are The Clash is about the only other one thats half decent that you mentioned there, You forgot This Is England, their last masterpiece

the idea that it is somehow good the clash dissolved after Combat Rock is....absurd. their demise was tragic. Mick and Joe made some great music solo, but nothing like together.

As much as I love 'em I'm glad they split when they did! Once Topper had gone they lost it and, for the first time, even began to look crap (Shea Stadium anyone?). Combat Rock is a great album though although some of the production (not all) dates it a little where none of their other recordings sound dated at all. I'm not counting the post Jonesy dregs of course; to Clash fans Cut the Crap etc is a bit like cancer was years ago: you try to pretend it doesn't exist but, if you're absolutely forced to aknowledge it, you use a subdued voice or whisper! Shocking. Post Clash (is: post Topper and Jonesy), BAD were good (Tighten Up Vol 88 and Kool Aid in particular), Topper's solo album in part and Strummer on Walker in particular and the second Mescalaroes album but, as Topper says elsewhere, none of it equaled the achievements of the Clash. That's no embarrassment though: it would be a hard bar to top!
Topper was absolutely unique as a drummer, every single beat is carefully considered an absolute master. Irreplacable
Agree w/ every word you wrote Beefheart; could a been me writing that. Even Joe (who pretty much tried putting the Clash back together) knows that it was probably best the way it went down. Maybe it was his guilt trying to get them back together; maybe it was just wanting to get back with Jonesy. Either way in the end he got a great band happening again before passing on. Clash was one of those magnificent meetings of individuals ,artists, where the combo is awesome. Like Beatles, Mick & Keith, Dean and Gene Ween,.

Luckily for Clash fans you can listen to their albums without feeling inundated by that quixotic, fanciful, liet motif.

In practice its always oppression. Collectivism removes the individual and individual rights. History is littered with examples. The Clash would not exist in that world yet they enjoy the proceeds of capitalism. Still a great band if we just analyze it at that simple level.
