I am a fan of the DS-1 and actually have the black BOSS 40th Anniversary edition pedal. I love the sustain it has but the with the distortion knob, you can go from cool bluesy tones to rock distortion, to metal distortion, to a mild fuzz tone, all in one pedal. Great demo Pete!!!

Marries very well with the Destroyer. Those were my favorite sounds from this pedal. I noticed that right away, listening to the song up front. When Pete takes the solo, that thing really takes off for me. and the experimenting at the end (Destroyer) yielded some great sounds. I love the attack! Really really cool!

For players who want to start getting into modifying pedals; The DS-1 is probably the best pedal to start with. There are countless different mods. I've been building amps and pedals for 15+ years now. I started modding Tube Screamers, Dyna Comps, muffs, I didn't even own a DS1 until a decade ago. I was looking at a schematic and it immediately jumped out to me how many things I could do. Various overdrive sounds, unique fuzz, colored distortions, etc.
The other Boss pedal that are great for modding are Bluesdrivers. Even though it only had a single tone control, they actually have a 3- band tone stack in the circuit, it's just that it's fixed with a resistor instead of a pot. You can swap out the tone control for a stacked pot so you can adjust the EQ, or just revoice it by using different resistor values. It's similar to the Fender Deluxe Reverb amps. They only have Treble and Bass controls, but there is a middle stack they fix with a 6.7k resistor. If you use a higher value resistor, it will increase the midrange, a lower one will scoop it. I always replace the 6.7K on the normal channel on the reissue for an 8K because it's actually what the vintage ones had, I don't know why they use the lower one, it's too scooped. On the other channel I add a trim pot to act as a Middle control, but before that I would just swap it for a 15K and it would bring it to a more of a Tweed tone. Some I would just replace the whole EQ for the Plexi tone stack.

Excellent job. I would note that the Vox Saturator, Joe Satriani's signature pedal was based on the DS-1, I believe. I bought a stock DS-1 around '06 and didn't really use it much then got the Saturator in '09 and was pretty much satisfied with it, until I started using fuzz for those particular applications. A DS-1 into a clean(ish) Marshall, along with a Strat, is what Gary Moore used during his Corridors of Power/Run For Cover era, which in turn John Norum emulated on the first three Europe albums (including The Final Countdown ofc). A little known fact: Boss designed their classic pedals using the Roland JC120 as their shop test amp. I don't know how that helps anybody except as a starting point to choose the right amp for them to sound their best. I found the perfect match with the clean channel of a Peavey Classic 50 half-stack and Marshall 2203's as well. I haven't gotten very good results through most Fender amps, too glassy and scooped. Like all pedals, it all depends on how it gels with the amp.

theres a diode you can cut in a DS1 that will give it the waza sound. They patterned the new custom sound after that mod.

Yup, the symmetric clipping diodes, snip one, you get asymmetric clipping. Tweak some biasing/feedback resistor values and there you go!

I always never really got on with the ds 1 either but the Waza craft are certainly a cut above the average boss pedals that have seemed to become more and more sterile since the early 80's when everyone absolutely had to have them. Now they're a force to be reckoned with.Im hoping for a PH 2W phaser and Waza flanger soon. I just got the DS 1w last week and already own the DM 2w,CE 2w,and DC 2w all Waza and all excellent, especially the modulation ones. I've always thought modulation sounds tons better in analogue which is probably why synths such as the OBx 8 and Prophet 5 are so desirable. Great playing by the way!

I looove the DS-1 aswell as the DS-2 (which like the Waza also has a second mode that is fuller with more mids). But I'm a sucker for Nirvana so... 😵🤪

For awhile, I was using a DS1 into the plexi channel of my Friedman Small Box. Tone knob NEVER above 9 o’clock though

I saw Satriani in 2006 (super colossal tour), and I saw him going from super clean to his classic lead tone by pressing the little orange box in front of him.

Once i discovered that the Distortion+ was my pedal it only took me a few months to buy the EQD Grey Channel pedal. I barely touch the settings on it now.
