  • So I used Windows 10 for like 5 minutes and already ran into a completely laughable usability problem with "Skype Preview." Surprisingly this isn't even the same application as Skype that I have used for the last million years for no good reason.

This is why I keep Windows strictly for gaming and my Mac for everything else. OS X (or rather, macOS) is years ahead at usability and good design practices. At least when I'm gaming I don't have to deal with Windows itself -- well, except for it asking to install endless amounts of updates every time the system is restarted. As for Skype, I ditched it years ago. Discord is my primary platform for gaming chat. The main reason is that it's very flexible (like Slack) and it works with just a browser.

I'm amazed you could even login to something called Skype Preview, let alone change devices (the default audio devices for chat can actually be set in Win10 itself). Weird af that they didn't just pre-install the full Skype, but I think that may have to do with other audio software often interfering with the Skype application.

Audio worked though, I was playing Civ 6 and listening to 8Tracks and my speakers were outputting the sound just fine. So it doesn't make much sense for the setting to be wrong on a windows level does it?
I also have no other software except Steam. It's literally the only thing I did. But what does make sense anymore.

    More tech rants!

Let's not kid ourselves. This is a Skype rant, not a Windows 10 rant. From what I understand, Skype is operated mostly independently from the rest of Microsoft, anyway, so this is only tangentially the Windows department's problem. Also, it's entirely possible this problem arose from using Boot Camp. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Skype Preview came preconfigured to work with Windows computers out of the box, with the option to change the audio settings left out intentionally to keep Preview simple for people who are less tech savvy.

Nice defense! You are correct this is a skype rant. But in reflects on windows as a whole.
Skype is a windows integrated product, especially from the description of Skype Preview. It seems to have specifically designed to integrate with Windows 10. Also Microsoft owns skype and made the intentional choice to ship Preview instead of the already functional Skype app. So I don't really buy this "blame the skype team" excuse.
You think this incredibly specific problem which is shared by many people on the internet is caused by bootcamp? I mean I suppose it's possible that the molecules in my body will randomly assemble in such a way that I can physically phase through a door but it's pretty unlikely.
Your third point is probably right on though! Some fucking genius on the Windows 10 launch team probably decided to "keep it simple" by removing a core piece of functionality. Which would mostly be fine, if skype didn't have such a bad habit of choosing the wrong output device.

Alex Krasny Well of course the other side of all the other people having the same problem is likely people who upgraded from Windows 7 or 8, which yeah makes it a Microsoft problem, but I would think the Skype team would be in charge of ensuring a smoother transition to 10.
I'd also like to emphasize my point that the configuration settings probably do exist embedded in the program somewhere, and those settings are set by the manufacturer on a by-computer basis. Since your computer wasn't explicitly made for Windows 10 and configured as such, Skype Preview probably just picked the first audio port it came across. Again, not saying that was a good choice, but it's pretty clear Skype Preview wasn't really made with advanced users in mind to begin with. I would guess that it works better (not gonna say "perfectly") on computers that came preinstalled with Windows 10.
As a final anecdote, I had a Skype problem in the past with my Microsoft account. I contacted the Microsoft team, and while they were fairly professional, they stressed that they don't really have control over Skype-related problems and redirected me to Skype customer support, which turned out to be total dogshit. Skype isn't nearly as well-integrated with the rest of Microsoft as you would think. It seems that part of the company is held on with duct tape and zip ties.

I could imagine the reason for Skype light might be of legal nature. Pretty sure there are anti cartell rights involved that prevent forcing installation of certain products. I dont know about USA law, but in EU they are currently on the verge of banning Edge/IE pre-Installations, arguing that the customer should have a choice whether to use or discard it.
About win10 itself: The whole thing is sketchy at best. I only got it because I got sick of Win7 and its suicidal tendencies regarding hardware management and networking. The basic fact that you have to uncheck 20 boxes of things that you dont want to send to microsoft upon installation is mad. Also that you have to do custom installation first in order to even access said list is like taking a massive dump on customer rights let alone privacy violation.

It was only a matter of time before some know-it-all rat "got to me." Well the joke's on you. That is what "literally" means.
