Had me screaming with laughter and delight. (And I, with James Ivory, wrote the original screenplay.) For one thing, 'Maurice' has at last won a place (thanks largely to Ivory's Call Me By Your Name) in the consciousness of your generation. But for another, more important thing: that the subject of this movie (which we defiantly made in the teeth of the AIDS anti-gay persecution; which Forster could not publish in his own lifetime because the love it portrayed was punishable by imprisonment; which lay dormant for so fucking long because audiences were too embarrassed to acknowledge its beauty) seems now so ludicrously remote, so seen for the injustice of what it truly is, that you, inheritors of the liberation in which it played a part, can make brilliant comedy of it. Thank you, but as you enjoy the comedy, remember to thank us. James Ivory is still, thank God, with us: but he is 93. He did you all a favour.
