For me, small cars (kei-hatchbacks) are the fun cars. They wasnt necessarily fast, but are very agile and fun to drive. The big 3 litres and up engines, a sedan or an suv, however are usually much better cruiser, one I'd choose to drive on long highway trips. But on a solo drive to the mountain roads, I'd choose my turbo suzuki cappucino everyday.
It's definitely a bit of both - in the British Saloon car Championship in the '60s, Minis would compete and hold their own against Mustangs and Jaguars!
you should try a fast high HP car one day, trust me you'll be impressed. My stripped down FC RX-7 is 2200lbs and pushing 430hp, it's not high HP but feels great.
There's a Nova in town that has done quite a few rolling burnouts on the highway, Im pretty sure it was doing upwards of 50 before putting the pedal down.
When ragging it my Old JCW mini would get a hint of wheel spin changing into 3rd, which was over 50mph. Pretty sure if you were trying to get them to spin up you could get that to last.
You got some of the right equations, but you are not putting them where everyone can use (and improve) them into a working model for global optimization. I think there should be prizes for weight reduction and efficiency in all things. But cars are a place to start. Make them better, faster, more efficient and effective in society and on the race track. Switch to electric rim drive, you can make your tires wider and throw away transmission, and other things. "Street legal category", "anything goes category", "fuel efficiency category", "robot driven and take out the driver category", "advanced materials category".
I owned a classic red Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI in the late 90’s while at university, very much a small light weight car purely for driving very fast with little in the way of safety to concern yourself with, but what a great car. Unfortunately as with many 205 1.9 GTI owners I ended up righting it off, but still managed to sell it for a decent price to someone who wanted it as a donor car for his own 205. I digress, it was a lot faster from a standing point than a lot of supposedly faster cars that eventually passed me at top end, once I got to around 70-80 MPH. From London, UK.
205 GTI 1.9 130 PS claimed weight (DIN) is 875 kg, 205 GTI 1.6 850kg, both under 1 ton, little rockets, my mum had two but non were sporty, 1.0 or tad under and a 1.7 diesel that was not bad and surprised a few people mum said they both fun to drive, light eight adds fun
So in other words the 1981 vw rabbit I'm building right now should be a great mix. It's got a haldex AWD swap and a 1.8t that when I'm done with it should easily be able to put out 300+hp all while weighing at most 2,000lbs if not significantly less and that'll be with a full roll cage and everything.(heaviest package offered from the factory was 1700lbs but could be as low as 1500lbs so if you account for stripping it out and adding the AWD system and roll cage it isn't unreasonable to put it less than 2000lbs.)
Like he said it depends on use case. Hp/lb is a pretty good indicator of 1/4 performance as it mitigates most advantages gained from AWD grip. If youre on a autox/track setup then low weight would be more advantageous. But if you also have to daily that car you probably want a passenger seat and some sound deadning so adding power is preferable IMO. Same for larger vehicles say if youre towing but still want something decently quick. Removing weight will make trailer sway less manageable so adding power would work better. If its just a fun track car though definitely gut it.
@@buellb0y yes eficient, in a general way it makes the car more fuel eficient and normaly less power equals to more reliability, if you live were i live fuel eficciency is a priority cause we are robed every Kilometer here in Portugal one liter costs 1.7€

Easy question to answer: Less weight. Reducing weight improves acceleration, handling, AND braking. Improving power without reducing weight does not do anything for braking or handling.
It just means you have to improve every other aspect (brakes, wider/generally grippier tires) to deal with the added weight. Also nore weight means more weight pressing on the tires which can improve grip as long as the tires aren't too overloaded. (e.g. bicycle tires on a hellcat lmao) But yeah removing weight would be the easier solution, but still
@@tomaltkruger4283 Yes, more weight puts more load on the tires, but those tires have to move more mass. It's actually a sub-linear relationship--in other words, the coefficient of friction decreases as the load on the tire increases. This is precisely why 1: small cars will have more lateral grip than large ones, all things being equal, and 2: A lower center of gravity is desirable. A lower center of gravity will reduce the load transfer to the outer tires when cornering, which splits the load more evenly across all 4 tires, yielding more overall grip. If you allow more weight transfer, what happens is the gain in grip from the outside tires is less than the loss of grip by the inside tires, and overall grip decreases. This is all from a purely mechanical grip scenario. Aerodynamic downforce changes things. The reason is because aerodynamic downforce increases the load on the tire without increasing the mass of the vehicle, leading to more potential lateral acceleration. Do note that the sublinear relationship still exists. Let's say tires generate 1.0g of lateral grip and vehicle has 1000kg of mass. If the vehicle has 1000kg of downforce, you'd think it would generate 2.0g of lateral grip, but it wouldn't. It might be 1.9 or 1.8 or so.

I've learned more about geometry, physics, and thermodynamics from donut then I ever did in school

I prefer lesser weight than more power, and it is more eficient
Like he said it depends on use case. Hp/lb is a pretty good indicator of 1/4 performance as it mitigates most advantages gained from AWD grip. If youre on a autox/track setup then low weight would be more advantageous. But if you also have to daily that car you probably want a passenger seat and some sound deadning so adding power is preferable IMO. Same for larger vehicles say if youre towing but still want something decently quick. Removing weight will make trailer sway less manageable so adding power would work better. If its just a fun track car though definitely gut it.
*efficient. 🙄

Engineering Explained should really get in on this...
Yes! He touches on this in every other video, but I think he never did a dedicated video like this...

I have a 2002 MR2 Spyder I recently turbo'd, so I'm sitting around 2200lbs and 240hp, so I'm rocking the best of both worlds, kinda. Sub 10:1 HP ratio.
