Thanks alot! I would note that if you're backing up a CT you need to give the NAS folder specific permissions or allow EVERYONE or you'll get a permission denied error.
I have the same issue! How did you get it to work when backing up CTs? I literally approved everything and still get that "Cannot open: Permission denied"
you should add a disclaimer for backing up LXC. The backup will fail unless you login on the synology NAS as the admin-user, "sudo chmod 777 -R /volume1/proxmox" .
This fixed it for me. LXC would fail without it. I wish I saw this sooner as it was really frustrating since I only had one container built and it would not backup until I found this. :\ otherwise, thanks for the tutorial :)
This works, thank you! Though, if security (user access) on that shared drive is a concern, you can also edit the Proxmox configuration. Just run nano /etc/vzdump.conf, uncomment the tmpdir line, and set it to tmpdir: /tmp. This way, temporary files are stored locally on Proxmox instead of the shared drive, and /tmp automatically empties itself, typically on reboot.
Just a FYI, if anyone is running unprivileged LXC containers, you'll get an permission error and will have to make a change to the folders NFS Permissions. Specifically change Squash to "Map all users to admin" @ 1:11
@wundertech Can we get a tutorial on how to install Tailscale inside a LXC container to access plex, for example. Im assuming it would be more secure than enabling Remote Access inside plex?
I would say that the biggest difference is that you don't need to set up a second server. There are other differences, but that's probably the biggest.
What are the steps to backup an iso from Proxmox to Synology? I don't see any easy way to do this. Also, when backing up the vm, it places it in a folder on the Synology called "dump" in the Proxmox share. Is there a way to tell it to place it in the "images" folder (for example) in the Proxmox share instead?
Wow you really helpmed me out with this video! I have one question though. What if your whole Proxmox server crasht (bad SSD for example) and you would have to restore from the automated backups from the synology nas; would you first have to create the VM's manually before restoring from the backup, or is it possible to restore VM's from snapshots without having to create the empty VM's itself first? Edit: I found out you can just go to your NFS share from proxmox, click the backup, choose Restore, and then start from scratch with the backup. This is awesome!
Mostly because for backups that run overnight, I don't really need the absolute peak performance (it's also a lot easier to set up than iSCSI), but you're absolutely right - I should have pointed out that you can use both.
I think that Proxmox Backup Server would do that. www.proxmox.com/en/proxmox-backup-server However, with this option, you can't. The next best option would be to run an rsync from Proxmox to the NFS storage on your NAS (off the top of my head).
Thanks for this video. I got this all working. But I notice every time Proxmox backs up on the Synology it does a full backup each time, no incremental backups. Isn't there a way to setup deduplication on the Synology NAS so all the duplicated is redudantly stored? I've done just two days of backups and it has already eaten up 67gb. AT this rate it will fill up hte NAS storage in no time lol. I wonder if I should try Proxmox Backup Server, I heard that does incremental backups. Would be cool if there was a way to run Proxmox Backup Server in a VM on the Synology NAS and use the NAS storage.
@@WunderTechTutorials I've read here and there, via google search, that people have managed to get the Proxmox Backup Server running in a VM on Synology. What about setting up Proxmox Backup Server as a VM within the Proxmox Cluster with iSCSI storage (or w/e) to the Synology NAS?

Hi Frank! I'm new to Proxmox and Nas environment, and Proxmox can't back up due to the problem that is called "no space left on nas". I have 16 tb of space on my nas but proxmox already used like 14.25 tb of the space that I have. How can I solve this, any idea?
Do you know exactly what is in the Proxmox folder on the NAS? If it's mostly backups (you can see the backups by clicking the node name, then backups, then changing it from local to the NAS in the top right), did you set a retention policy? If you didn't, it could be saving all backups which could be the problem.
@@WunderTechTutorials First of all thank you for replying. I've just figured out that proxmox does not backup to nas but it backs up to pbs which is running out of storage. And I checked the proxmox file in nas and there is nothing that can keep that much storage. And for the backup which uses pbs storage, I checked the retention policy.
