    Good point about updating the DHCP reservation with the new MAC address for the new unit. I probably would have overlooked that and got stuck until I figured it out LOL. Great video.

    Great video, especially showing how to use Migration Assistant. I actually found your channel when looking for the best way to move a client from an old QNAP NAS to a new Synology NAS, and I followed a video about using HyperBackup to do it. It wasn't NASty. (Sorry, couldn't resist!🤣)

    The first scenario you mentioned is what I had to do. My DS920+ died after running continuously since I purchased it at launch, so just under 4 years. At first, I thought it was the power supply, but the unit was completely dead. I purchased a replacement DS923+ and it was great how seamless the migration process was. I just inserted my drives into the bays and booted it up. It asked if I wanted to keep my settings. After that and a reboot, I was able to login like nothing happened. For a while I was so worried about recovering my data. This time I will be purchasing the extended warranty.

      So it's that simple. Transfer the hard drives and it will pick up all the settings etc from your old setup? That's pretty epic.

    personally, anyone with any quantity of data to transfer and is thinking of using Hyper Backup. I'd suggest using USB Copy instead as Hyper backup is incredibly slow. I've run Hyper Backups to external HDD's and seen as slow as 6Mb/sec transfer rates. USB Copy, on the other hand, was used to restore some 7Tb onto my new NAS and that was transferring at over 200Mb/sec from a fast WD Elements 14Tb external drive.

    A few notes… a) try be certain your RAID/SHR is in good health when doing an HDD migration (failing to put all drives in and/or putting one in backwards in the bracket happens more often than you think) and the last thing you want is your new NAS not to find at least your minimum number of drives at boot as recovering from that, or just immediately needing to rebuild a RAID/SHR set, can be really painful b) I have had HDD migrations start straight up (like it was still the old NAS) when going to the same model NAS (like with a service replacement) - for this to happen be certain you are running the latest version of DSM possible on both NAS so you should dry run your new NAS with a spare drive to do that update - I received a service replacement with DSM6.2 on it and it refuse to migrate in total c) I don't know about anyone else but I like to be giving my new drives a bit of a workout before committing all of my data to them - when going to new drives I typically take the manual route, at least initially, to be sure everything will work out first and then will maybe take another migration route as you don't want to find out something is awry in the middle of a migration d) be mindful of licenses, such as camera or MailPlus, and be ready to transition them manually if they don't come over on their own.

      Do the HDD's need to go back in order or can they go into any slot and it doesn't matter?

    • @IntoxicatedVortex
      @IntoxicatedVortex 11 місяців тому

      @jeremyyounger5442 Functionally it doesn't matter but one should always endeavour to keep them in order as there might always be that rare circumstance where it actually does matter and you happen to fall in to that.

    I'd add another way, rsync using the file services for those wanting to change from ext4 to btrfs but don't want the app info carried over. Just make sure to do the processes in the old NAS and don't bother making new shared folders if you go this route or else you'll make duplicates.

    Migration assistant supports migrating from btrfs HD (1st nas) to btrfs SSD (2nd nas) ?
    Harddrive migration : does the order or the place of the disks in the nas matters ? Do we have to keep the same order in the new nas ?

    At 14:57 you glossed over the two "installation method" options. I guess you think it is self explanatory but for this beginner it isn't. If I select the second option "Reset system configurations", yes it keeps the files, but what exactly do I risk losing when the system settings are reset to default?

    5:04 - "at least" - doesn't work for me at the moment. I have an old DS418play with 4x8tb HDDs and want to use Migration Assistant on my new ds923+ with also 4x8tb HDDs. Using SHR volume on the old system I get the error that the volume on my ds923+ is too small and I need to make it about 1tb larger - which is not possible. Apparently it is also not possible to shrink the volume on my DS418play to make it fit. So I'm a bit mad about this and not sure how to proceed.

    Hello, another great video. Ive learned lots from watching your videos on UA-cam. Have just set up Synology photos on my DS423+ which has 6GB of Synology ram.
    When I was transferring the photos and videos from my Mac, I've got them all backed up from iCloud I kept hitting a problem where my Mac mini would run out of ram and safari would have to close then reload stopping the process. After checking Activity monitor it was the Safari web page linked to synology that was consuming all the ram. I have a M1 Mac mini with 16GB of ram, eventually I had to close safari reboot my Mac and copy them over in lesser amount before the same thing happened again. Any thoughts.

    I'm seriously considering about upgrading my Synology DS220J to a new one. One main reason is because my current DS220J does not support MailPlus, amongst other things.
    Another reason is because it appears that my DS220J is running really slow especially when I try to connect on my Mac via SMB and opening up libraries on my Plex server.

Can I use my 5 Drobo DAS 8TB Barracuda drives with the Synology NAS? I’ve read yes….and no. How do I actually get my 12 TB transferred over without causing a delay in my work streams? How long should I expect it to take? If I buy new drives, can I back up my data from the NAS to my old Drobo in an offsite location?

    Know this is not the best way to get it done, but I’m thinking about moving from a 918+ with 4x 12tb ironwolfs to a 6bay, but also ext4 > btrfs… and don’t have enough external HDs for my 22tb of data. My thoughts are to back up the most important things, start with new 2x 12tb in new NAS in SHR, pull over what I can fit, and the remove one drive at a time (delete transferred items and rebuild after each), and the add to new unit and expand the volume… overly complicated, but wouldn’t have to buy a complete new set of drives. Would that work? Is there a better way?

Ok for me with the performance and I have 3-2-1 backup (external on Amazon Glacier), my rough plan is to run it for maybe 2-3 more years as long as it’s working fine. Does that sound reasonable? When drives are 7-8 years, I guess it’s time to change.

      @BoraHorzaGobuchul 11 місяців тому

      @@christerwiberg1 You replace the drives if they fail or have bad smart, or you need larger capacity.
      You replace the unit if it dies, or ceases to satisfy your requirements, as in not supporting new applications you definitely need, not having enough drive bays, or performance.
      In any case I suggest you make a backup e.g. to an external drive prior to that (you should have it anyhow if you value your data).
      Alternatively, if you have extra cash and want to have fun, you can get new unit/drives even if you don't really need them. Whatever floats your boat.
