I just got my wife (not a Ham but is GMRS) a KG-Q10H and opened up the freaks to GMRS and HAM. I put a mag mount antenna in her trunk and gave her a laminated card on how to use the radio including when she is allowed to use the Ham bands
I bought mine for EDC. I work as a radio technician for remote mountain top repeaters and wanted a ham HT that I could take with me that wouldn't die if it got wet, dropped, etc. It survived the summer season and seems to be handling the winter season well. Next spring marks one year of ownership
I want to see radios that not only use USB-C, but the USB-3.0 charging standard. Meaning they can use 5/9/12/15/20 volt 3 amp smart chargers. Most my Chinese radios won’t charge unless it’s USB-2.0 5v, 2.4a max. It just won’t charge if I plug it in to any USB-C multi-volt charger. You can always get a cigarette lighter that attaches to battery posts.
Still love my FT1DR. I saw a video from the Tech Prepper a couple of years back where he talked about the VX6R’s 12v capability, and I stumbled across the FT1DR’s, but didn’t know those other FTs could charge on 12v as well. Good to know! As for USB-C…I’d love to see more manufacturers add it as a charging option. Down with proprietary connectors!
I snipped all of my radio power cords and put powerpoles on them. That way I can charge from a battery or from the wall wart. I also buy Ethernet routers that will run off of 12V and put powerpoles on them, too. My computer monitor takes 19V in, so I installed a 19V power supply on the back that takes 12V in. Let's me run a monitor in the sticks if I need to. However, everything else I use like my phone and laptop is USB PD. CoolGear makes USB power supplies that will run off 12-24VDC including a 100W PD power supply. So I install those in my truck, camper, and battery boxes. I learned a lesson back in 2019 in the aftermath of a tornado that power is everything. Have as many options as possible.
Yaesu Batteries, the VX5, VX6, VX7 all use the same battery, this is a very good battery from Yaesu! The VX8Dr, VX8G, FT1, FT2, FT3, and FT5 use the same series of batteries, BUT be aware that with this last group that changing the batteries often WILL weaken the clips on the batteries, to the point that they could break off and render the battery almost useless, same with using the belt clip attached to the battery will weaken the battery mounting clips at the top of the battery. The clips are flexible plastic and will fatigue over time with frequent changing of the batteries. Avoid dropping the radio as well, this can cause the battery to come off and break the clips, again a 7.4 volt paper weight! I have held a broken battery on with a rubber band and this works but it's not ideal. So there you have it, good radios with less than optimal battery clips, this is with the VX8D-G, and FT1, 2, 3, 5, and any other Yaesu that uses this series of batteries. As for charging, I'm all for the 12 volt standard, in an emergency you should be able to find 12 volt batteries in wrecked or abandoned cars, and all you need is a is the power plug that fits the Yaesu Handhelds on a lead with clips on it and you are ready to charge all the radios listed above, and no doubt others as well, you can make a handful of these cables and have them handy in case the S H T F! What do you need with USB charging? In fact there should be portable AM, FM radios that can run off 12 volts, most of our Ham radio gear already is 12 volt compliant, a great standard that should have more support! This is important! 7 3 de VE7PGE
The W0AEZ 5AH USB-C Battery uses 21700 cells, not 18650 cells. The 21700 are larger and have more mAh in them. FYI for 12V charging, the Yaesu SDD-13 12VDC Cigarette Lighter Adapter Cable has a Noise Filter: on it. That will reduce noise from a vehicle's cig port when t it is running. HRO has the best price I've found for the SDD-13.
I still use my FT1D. love the radio! APRS battery consumption sucks, but stand alone battery packs help while backpacking. The only other issue I have with the radio is at times the battery pack on the radio will shift/move and the radio powers off. Its never been dropped, I have no clue. Maybe a new W0AEZ battery pack will fix this issue.
If you want to be able to use a USB powerbank to charge your 12v batteries, look at USB PD charging. There are a lot of USB cable chargers that do low power 5v stuff, but USB Power Distribution allows for 9v/12v/15v/20v output so you could output and charge at 12v with a USB C cable battery bank. PD requires negotiation of what power source to send (i.e. it asks the device what volage to supply) so 'dumb' devices dont usually work, but there are cables and adapters that can do this automatically. Adafruit make a USB C to DC barreljack cable thar autonegotiates 12V. You just need to make sure that the powerbank you use supports PD and 12V PD (some don't). All of the Ugreen models of powerbank do.
Usb c have this days different voltages even over 20 volts. So it Chan charge also with a adapter or module 12v devices. You can buy modules wher you can switch micro switches to your desired voltage, I think it was 5v- 9v- 12v and 20(12volt).
I have the VX8, FT1, FT3, and FT5. I was hard pressed to move to the touch screen because I preferred the tactile response of the FT1 for All-Star dtmf codes. I have no plans to sell any of these.
Not just usb C but USBC PD capable why because the battery can request the voltage it needs. Now if we could get a cable with the USB C charge controller built in and 12v out we could plug this into any vehicle or home charger to charge your radios.
Yes I have an FT1, and it gets primarily used as an external GPS unit for my FT-991a, also of note, the Battery for the FT1 FT2 FT3 FT5 is the same battery for the VX8, and yes I feel like a hoarder now, but I do have all of those HTs I mentioned for the battery.
12V chargeable/powerable everything is awesome for solar chargeable/powerable everything electronic! I've been trying to find everything from computers to TVs with that capability for a long time now, especially when I was living in my RV...
I carry a USB-C PD cable that negotiates 12V, and put a powerpole on the other end. I can use a PD powerbank or supply to run all my 12v ham gear now (as long as it'll negotiate enough current).
I have the FT1 myself, good radio, good channel management so good as a scanning radio, the FT5 looks like it is not able to scan banks. The VX6, 7, 8, FT1, 2, and 3 have banks to break up the memories into banks as needed.
I just did the USB-C swap on my IC-705 just because. It still only supports 5v 1a charging but at least now I don’t keep trying to put the cable in the wrong way.
I have a FT-1D in regular use and I charge it from the cigarette lighter plug on my car/truck, no need for a battery box. Almost all HTs could be charged from 12 volts in the past. Then the chicom radios arrived with drop in charging only (looking at you Anytone, TYT, Retvis). I'd rather have 12 volt charging than USB-C
Just an FYI FT-60R will not charge the battery through the external DC power plug, but it will operate the radio. In order to charge the battery, you'll need the cradle, which will operate off the same plug.
Every radio could easily be updated with a USBC battery. Preferably a high capacity battery. Like if my FT-65R had a high cap USBC battery offering, it would be the only radio I recommend for new hams. Want to buy a VX6R next, but am hesitant about two things - it seems to have the topple over problem that I don’t love about thin radios that I can’t add a thicker battery to, and then I’m kinda hopeful we see a replacement/update this year. Probably not, but hopeful!
For emergency use I prefer the 12v chargeable radios. I don't have a USB-C chargeable radio yet. I have a few USB micro FRS radios that work well. One question. Can you use the USB-C charge function while using the radio? I know you can operate the Yaesu radios from 12v while charging. Does noise from the USB-C controller cause any issues for receiving while charging? My shortwave receiver is totally unusable while charging from USB.
Yes if you're up in the Backwoods is there a power bank you still charge it or solar panel r s h if happens they don't have usb-c charge they going to be left behind
Thanks for the heads-up. I've had my eye on one of W0AEZ's batteries. Just placed my order while watching this video! Do you get a commission, Jason? LOL

USB C should be standard on most things. I haven't been able to get my Kenwood TH-D74a to charge on the micro USB. Manual says it's for data only. I would like to know how you got it to work. I can't wait for the TH-D75 and USB C to charge. However a battery bank and a PD cable with an adapter makes it handy to charge on the go and in the field. This will go to my wife when the TH-D75 comes out. The USB-C and added features are things I will use, My wife is still learning as she's a new ticket.
Most of the Chinese DMR radios are starting to release usb-c batteries I believe in order to sell in Europe they have to now & there standardizing on that so they have lest SKU
I like that larger battery for the FT5DR. Do you know of anyone who makes a mount for that radio? I have a FT5DR that I want to mount to the handlebars of my motorcycle and use the bluetooth communicator (Sena) in my helmet with a PTT button on the handlebars. I think it would be fun to explore trails that way.
I’m looking on Amazon at the Yaesu adapter. Trying to determine which wire is positive and which is negative. Maybe it will be evident when it arrives. Or stick a meter to it.
I would prefer USB-C over 12v for prepping reasons (btw your prepping stream yesterday was good.) I carry multiple USB battery banks with me as my EDC and it's more convenient than an actual 12v battery. Everything electronic in my EDC are USB rechargable so it is good to have anything standardized from one source if needed. I would prefer USB-C so I could only carry two USB-C cables instead of the many outdated USB versions. There is a VX-5R. The main difference between the 6R and 5R is the bands: 5R works with 6m instead of 220. I have it over the 6R since there are 6m repeaters in my area, but not any 220.
How do you keep your USB battery banks charged when they run down? There is a flood or earth quake, a storm, power is out for days, maybe weeks, lots of wrecked cars with 12 volt batteries, and many of the newer ones have USB outlets in them, but the outlets won't work because the car is damaged, but I'll bet you the 12 volt battery still has a charge in it! A simple plug, cable with clips in you pocket could charge your Yaesu Handheld!
@@PGE564If you are referring to when I'm at home, I have 12v backups since I have my entire ham shack running off of a 12v LiFePO4 battery bank. Many I have solar recharge since they have panels on top of them. I put them in the window and allow the sun to recharge them. I also rotate each out each time I'm recharging them. If you are referring when I'm away, I can recharge them while I'm at work. However, I'm not going to be away that long unless I'm on a trip. I could get a buck converter, which wouldn't be a bad idea to put in my EDC.
If you plan on using a 5 volt standard, just make sure you have plenty of adapters for unplanned use, so you can get your hands on one or more quickly. You know the type of adapters you need, make a few and keep them in accessible locations. 7 3 @@ke8mattj
On the battery or the radio? I picked up a battery with USB-C for my Anytone a while back, but it was still only about 1800mah, not the 5AH like the one in this video
@@Josh-KJ7OEP Just the battery for now, no usb in the radio. Still using the Kenwood style connector. However new Anytone is supposed to be released soon, wouldn't be surprised if it had USB-C for programming
USB-C is certainly convenient, but most of the time I see it being utilized, it is either via AC or 12v anyway, so it clearly isn't necessary if you already have an AC or 12v charger. Again, convenient to power up your radio from a powerbank or something similar, but I've never been unable to charge a radio due to it NOT having USB-C.
About Yaesu and 12V ht charging, the Yaesu chargers do not supply 12V, maybe 11.5V. Everybody says 12V is ok, but does that mean 13.8 is ok? The W0AEZ batteries just went back in stock. I was waiting, so I snagged one.
Yes Kevin added stock in-line with this video - we coordinated that, like I mentioned in the video. Glad you got one. I charge my Yaesu HTs with 13.8 volts and have never had an issue. Most LiFePO4 batteries are nominla at 12.8V though.
USB C. USBC charging and programming from 1 port. Convince, accessibility, availability, and compatibility. I think the Bluetooth may be a bit much. Unless you reprogram dayly.
@@HamRadio2 I was just curious if you had. I have 2 of those new USB-C batteries for each of my D878UVII+ radios. Can't complain other than I wish they came with rubber USB-C caps.
i do not buy any radio that can't charge USB-C or 12V . 12V and USB is the easiest way to power/charge when on the go or during a emergency or camping/POTA . with my camping LED lantern has a 12V charge cord. I put power poles on it. even the Baofeng UV-5R has USB C or 12V charge . new battery has USB C on it. the charging stand has 12V adapter or USB A cord for it. China got a jump on USB C and 12V charging from the start of the UV-5R radios. nice to see Japan going USB C .small USB solar panels are common now. power bank's USB all over. and best part about USB C. just plug in. no up side down . no flipping. 73's
The EU is making the phone industry change, lets just go and make it a full all industry standard. Just like the EU said, make it were there is one type of charging cable and not dozens.
Suggest you are VERY careful with USB-C chargers/devices, as the permutations and combinations are many. And if you use the wrong charger/cable, you could fry your device.

Agreed
Love your videos. What is that antenna on your D74? Thanks in advance.

@@HamRadio2 thank you. Merry Christmas
Still using my FT1XDR, KG5MJB.
12 volt charging is a very good idea
How do you charge your D-74 over usb?? Nothing in the manual and couldn't get mine to work
Hi Jason, what antenna is that you are using on your Kenwood D74? Thanks!

Thank you!@@HamRadio2
I have two ft5 have a ft2 buyong another one love the ft2 the best.
Is USB-C a standard of 12 VDC?
Power poles on a 12 volt car plug to charge in transit.
I thought I'd be able to dock the battery too, but just use of usb c is OK. What's best is the expanded life.
Let's forget about USB-C and go for wireless charging. Now that's next level. 🙂
USB C. USBC charging and programming from 1 port. Convince, accessibility, availability, and compatibility. I think the Bluetooth may be a bit much. Unless you reprogram dayly.
WHEN IN MY TRUCK I PLUG IN TO THE CIGARETTE LIGHTER. AT MY PFFICE AND HOME THE CRADLE PLUGS IN TO 110V/AC I NEVER SAW A WALL OUTLET WITH A USB-C.
Have you bought the new Anytone USB-C battery yet?
Yes, it works well
@@HamRadio2 I was just curious if you had. I have 2 of those new USB-C batteries for each of my D878UVII+ radios. Can't complain other than I wish they came with rubber USB-C caps.
Yaesu ft252 also can 12v
I'm not familiar with that one, but if it is an older unit - lots of the older ones will charge via 12V
My Cobra GMRS hand held charges using USB C
I still have an FT1D de Mike, WA9PIE
Me too
i do not buy any radio that can't charge USB-C or 12V . 73's
I’d love to grab an ft-1, but no one is selling theirs.
USB would,take over the whole VX1 😂
USB-C or no purchase policy here.
Some people are like that. I don't get it. But to each his own.
👍
You know that Kenwood Cable will also charge your Icom ID-50, 51, & 52. Just sayin…
Not possible, I don't own an ID-50 or ID-51, lol.
I will look at the ID-52. It too is MicroUSB chargeable so that is usually how I charge it.
The new USB- D would be much better
The EU is making the phone industry change, lets just go and make it a full all industry standard. Just like the EU said, make it were there is one type of charging cable and not dozens.
Suggest you are VERY careful with USB-C chargers/devices, as the permutations and combinations are many. And if you use the wrong charger/cable, you could fry your device.
If any electronic handheld device is to be sold in the EU, USB-C charging will be mandatory.... the US can thank us later.
USB -C is always needed. What kinda question is that?
It's a question that I answer in the video.
Like so many other things in this hobby LONG overdue. Along with the horrendous software and Windows XP and any version of Windows that is not Windows 10! Lack of macOS software!
