      Yes, it is so hard to say goodbye. I have had to do it many times and it never gets easier. The pain of having to put a dog down is tempered by the joy of a new puppy.

    Being a lover of Labs I have watched numerous You Tube videos of Lab litters but this one is without question my favourite. Your love for what you do and your love for your dogs/puppies comes across so strongly. I teared up when you talked about Tidge having brain damage and having to put him down :( A dear friend of mine who lives in England has 5 Labs, two of whom are show dogs and I love hearing about and seeing pics of all their activities. Thank you for sharing this with us :)

      Thank you Veronica for your kind words. Yes, puppies are a real labour of love and one spends a lot of time just adoring them!

      Oh how I feel for you, Susan. We lost our black lab Ruby on Christmas eve. She was on her morning walk (her second most favorite thing after food!) when she stopped for a bit then lay down, quietly went to sleep and didn't wake up.

    Lovely video. So sad to lose Twitch! He had hydrocephalus, I’m fairly sure of. He lived for a good, long time, and he was very loved by you! I’m sure they all made their owner homes a pleasure to inhabit. It was remarkable to see the yellow pup snuggling-in to your wife, when they were being weighed. You took your work so much more seriously than with so many breeders...kind regards.

      It was obvious that poor old Titch had problems but we were really saddened by Tyson who looked just perfect but was suffering and we had to say goodbye. We met a few of the pups when they were grown and they all had wonderful personalities. I'm sure it reflected their happy and loving early days.

      Hi Melanie,
      It amazed me how much time we spent just looking at them sleeping in a pile! :) I hope it all goes well with your New Year pups.

    I had a mother daughter pair of labs give birth in the same week and they shared the feeding of the resulting 14 puppies one feeding all of them at a time always with a very martyd expression on her face but no one made her get in the box with the pups

    • @smacksman1
      @smacksman1  7 років тому

      haha! The 'martyd expression' is absolutely spot on. So funny. You must have had your hands full at feeding time when they went onto solids.

    My Labrador called holly is 8 weeks pregnant

    • @smacksman1
      @smacksman1  8 років тому +1

      Congratulations!
      In the last week I would definitly make a whelping box with a 1"x3" rail inside as shown in the video. It saved many of our puppies from being crushed/suffocated by the mother trapping them against the side of the box.
      The birthing took several hours so we had carboard boxes with a hot water bottle in the bottom covered by a towel for the new borns to go in while the mother furiously raked the paper bedding during contractions. Otherwise, I think many of the pups would have been injured. In between contractions we put the pups to her to feed.
      I hope Holly comes through her ordeal well.

    Love how no one addresses how we called the female pups bitches, like I know gurl dogs are called that but kids could be watching this too, it’s unlikely but they could learn that word. Plus its kinda rude in my opinion, to me it’s better to just call it a girl dog.

    • @smacksman1
      @smacksman1  6 років тому

      I'm sorry if I offended you Mia. Not my intention I assure you. I am 76 years 'old school' and the correct word used in context doesn't offend me at all. I used to date a lovely girl called Gay and she was as happy as her name means. I also find it more insulting to liken the lady head of a committee to a chair rather than chairman. Lately I was confused when my post on a forum about cooking was deleted. Must I use 'chicken chest' in stead of my chicken breast'? Methinks things have got a bit silly!

    • @AmieNotHere
      @AmieNotHere 6 років тому

      smacksman1 Don’t worry about it, and you didn’t offend me at all, I was just saying that it’s kinda rude to call a girl dog that, but then again it is my opinion, and we all have our own opinions and our own ways of taking care of our pets. Its also unlikely that kids would watch this, but sometimes teachers at school like to show this kind of stuck to kids and sometimes teachers don’t check if it has any bad words or not, so that’s why I think it’s bad to use that kind of language in a video, it’s pretty rare that teachers don’t check the video so it’s all cool. It is for educational purposes since girl dogs are actually called that, but I really don’t get why they decided to put that as there other “Name”, anyway sorry for being a little mean, I was just in a bad mood and when I saw this video it kinda made me a bit mad but then I realized people actually call dogs that and since I’m studying to become a veterinarian I should really learn to accept this kind of stuff, sorry again!

    • @smacksman1
      @smacksman1  6 років тому

      Good luck with being a vet. It's a tough job. Sad that proper words are not being taught in schools today. I used to giggle at naughty words and phrases in the Bible as horrible little boys would do so I expect that the modern Bible has been sanitised too. Oh well, I'm old and can't change so don't mind what I say.

    • @smacksman1
      @smacksman1  6 років тому

      A female canine is called a bitch. A male canine is called a dog. Look it up. Strange as it may seem to many, I find wtf (what the f**k) offensive but then I am 'old school' and not 'with it'. Sorry!
