  • This ABC soap opera premiered in 1963 and is the longest running American soap opera in production, which certainly attests to it's popularity. This episode has Tony Dow of Leave It To Beaver fame as a detective seeking a paper weight used as a murder weapon. Also stars John Beradino, Emily McLaughlin, and Peter Hansen. Transferred from 16mm b-w kinescope film.

Having come into my love of GH around the time of Luke and Laura, I never realized that Nurse Jesse was so much more than just "the- nurse-always-at-the-desk..." And Dr. Hardy was actually a heart throb back in the day as well.
    Very cool to see!

Actually the ratings were so bad during this time that "ABC" decided to cancel GH in late 1978, but they had nothing to replace it yet. So they called Gloria Monty (A famous theater director) and asked her if she would come in for just a year. They wanted the ratings to be up at least a lil, so GH would not go out in disgrace. Of course as we all know now, Gloria Monty would completely change the course of history with L&L. I got sucked in by the Laura, Scotty, & Bobbie triangle. Then when Luke showed up we pretty quickly wanted to see Laura with Luke ( Viewers felt this way BEFORE "Night at the Disco"). The chemistry was so damn intense, we knew it would come to a boil, but how and when? Clearly you were a loyal viewer, so I wish you had been able to see through til at least 1984. It blows me away how different the show looked less then 18 months later!! Went from Blk&Wht to color, and they changed out almost all the actors. I have NEVER understood replacing actors to play the same parts? The woman playing "Jane" sounds & looks sooo much like Monica.

This was before soaps and other daytime shows were preserved. Before the mid to late 70s, soaps were done live, and if they were taped, they would be erased, a practice called "wiping" because videotape was expensive at the time. One of the reasons why kinescopes existed because it was cheaper, and could be easily shown on smaller network affiliates that did not have videotape capabilities. ABC always had kinescopes of soaps GH, All My Children, One Life to Live, and programs such as American Bandstand until the mid-70s.

Part of the “Who Killed Phil Brewer?” storyline. He got bumped off in December 1974 (bludgeoned with a rock paperweight). At first Jessie was accused but then Diana confessed and produced the missing paperweight covered with blood. She thought that her estranged husband Dr. Peter Taylor had killed Phil to protect their marriage. Meanwhile Nurse Augusta McLeod was pregnant by Peter and decided to keep the baby. DA Ross Jeanelle (Tony Dow) was determined to find the killer! Meanwhile Lesley was torn between Dr. Joel Stratton and millionaire businessman Cameron Faulkner. But Joel had a secret- he suspected he had the same heart disease that claimed the life of his older brother Owen a few months earlier (and Owen had fallen in love with Diana). And how did things turn out? SPOILER ALERT: the killer was none other than Augusta, who killed Phil in self defense because he was attacking her and she had to defend her unborn baby. She ultimately went to prison for a short time, gave her child up for adoption and left town. Joel Stratton also left town because of his health, leaving the field open for Cam Faulkner to marry Lesley. But shortly afterwards Lesley was called to the bedside of Doris Roach, a former GH nurse who was dying. She confessed that years ago she helped Lesley’s father Dr. Walter Williams switch her newborn daughter with the dead daughter of Jason and Barbara Vining. Dr. Williams didn’t want his daughter’s predicament ruin her chances as a medical student (yet she became pregnant by one of her instructors Gordon Gray!). Nurse Roach informed Lesley that her daughter was still alive, starting Dr. Faulkner to search for a little girl she did find- and her name was LAURA…..

@@trewestbrook7404 I really don't understand why it is still in black and white by '75.
A mere four or five years from this would be Luke and Laura. I know you can watch scenes and characters from just six months apart and there'll be an entirely different focus and storyline going on.
Again, Dark Shadows, which aired right with General Hospital, was in color, and GH was still black and white? I've watched early seventies clips from other soap operas and they'd be in color.
Wonder why this one held out for so long? Must have thought the color was going to be a fad.

So many people commenting on this and other episodes at how different GH is today. Hello? This is a complete different time and audience. I began to watch GH in 1980, The Monty years and found the show fascinating. This of course is different writing and a whole different narrative to what the show was after Monty came on. I guess if I had watched the show prior to the Luke and Laura and the whole different direction the show went, I may would have thought otherwise. Also, had Monty now showed up, and put the series in #1 place, it was on the verge of cancellation. So, had she not done her magic, we would not even be having this conversation or even comparing the then and now

Every time the camera pans to show someone else enter the scene around that hospital counter or somebody walks off or again, they enter, that blonde nurse crosses in the shot. She's obviously supposed to make it look "bustling" or busy, but she really does stand out doing it a bit too much.
I can't believe this is '75. I wondered why Dark Shadows didn't affect other soap operas when DS was getting all the high ratings. DS had gone color about a decade before this.
I guess the feeling was this was being more realistic.

I started watching GH in college in around 1978. The background music in this clip is SO CHEESEY, lol, as is the opening theme. I was quite surprised, however, to discover the conversation about an abortion on daytime TV in 1975. Pretty treacherous, shocking storyline and material back in those days. Very interesting, to say the least.

In the 70's, maybe your Parents will remember, interracial marriage and homosexuality weren't even ALLUDED to, not even during nighttime programming. I remember when Alex on "Taxi" was ACTING gay in a gay bar ( 1978 or so ), and before that, Jody ( hilariously played overboard by Billy Crystal ), the first gay character on network TV, on "Soap". But neither of those characters were taken seriously. My, my, how things have changed, y'know?

If you remember, All My Children had an abortion storyline in 1973 when Erica Kane underwent one. She was modeling at the time and just gotten married. Her new husband wanted kids, but she wasn't ready to be a mother because of her career, which at the time, it was still a no-no for a model to be pregnant, let alone be a mother. So by that time, it was legal, and soaps began to follow AMC's lead.
