      I drive my prado lj95 1998 model daily too. I come from a fuel mileage conscious country where 90% of the diesel passenger cars are 1500cc and below so my prado with the 3L naturally aspirate idi diesel engine can keep up with highway traffic😅.
      Its a very capable vehicle in bad roads where i mostly drive on.

    I will never forgive the cash for clunkers initiative.
    Edit: fun fact- Land Cruisers could last about 12min before the engine would seize, when most cars would average 30sec-3min..

      Thankfully, barely any Toyotas got destroyed in the cash for clunkers scheme if you look at the totals.

    Great video. I imported a “97 Prado 3-door like yours last year and I love it. Of all the various JDM vehicles I’ve personally imported, this is my favorite and part of that is because of the great parts of interchangeability with vehicles sold in the US. (i’m tired of chasing parts from overseas). This Prado uses the same frame as the 3rd generation 4Runner. In fact, the front suspension is identical to the 4Runner. So super easy to get suspension parts anywhere. That also means it suffers from the same lower ball joint weakness of that generation 4Runner. The lower ball joints should be replaced as a safety measure with only OEM Toyota ones as a preventative measure. The Prado’s rear suspension is basically a Land Cruiser 80 series. So again, most rear suspension parts are available in the US.
    When I selected the Prado, I wanted to import I wanted to make sure the Prado I picked had an engine that could easily be serviced in the US. So I went with the gasoline 3RZ 2.7 4-cylinder engine because that was used in US market 4Runners and Tacomas. This gas engine actually produces more horsepower than the turbo diesel (but less torque). It’s not as powerful as the gas V6, but does get better gas mileage.

    • @hokz7283
      @hokz7283 6 днів тому

      Same control arm(upper/lower) ball joints as the 1st gen tacoma and 3rd gen 4runner.

Also, all of them have manual transmision and that´s a plus.

    Capacitors usually go on the ecu around this age and they crack heads easily. 1kzte is quite zippy but the oil gets dirty instantly even with egr blocked

    • @Jimports
      @Jimports  8 днів тому +1

      Head cracking is a known issue with the 1KZ-TE, but it’s often preventable. Deleting the EGR system early (before 100k km) helps a lot, as it reduces heat buildup that stresses the head. Intercooled models, like mine, are even less prone to this issue since the intercooler lowers intake temperatures and adds to overall engine durability.
      As for the ECU, capacitor failure is common on vehicles of this age, not just the 1KZ-TE trucks.

    The overheating issues you talk about relates to the oil and engine cooling system being integrated into one radiator. This is the J series achilles heel. Especially while towing. The oil from the gearbox literally boils the engine coolant when the vehicle is pushed hard, and this is what leads to cracked heads. Before you waste your time blanking the EGT, replace the radiator, even in a low mileage vehicle. It's common practice not to replace gearbox and coolant liquids, and this can lead to pitting and wear between the two systems resulting in coolant in your gearbox, and vica versa. The autos are not great tow vehicles!
    Some more interesting facts are that these were/are commonly used in Ireland because no respectable Irish farmer or fisherman would be seen dead in a British Land rover. Something to do with some 'troubles'? 😉 Alternatively they are cheap in the UK because of brand loyalty to LR. But their prices are steadily increasing as Brits realise their reliability.
    Something else worth mentioning is that they could be ordered with a rear diff lock, which makes them phenomenal off road vehicles, and arguably just as capable as a 70 Series. Otherwise I think they came with a LSD?
    Another few things worth mentioning is that an aftermarket suspension, like OME or Tough Dog, transforms the ride, and makes them more capable vehicles off road. And lastly and probably the jewel in their crown for fuel saving, is that they can easily be transformed into 'selective' 2x4's, because as you correctly mentioned, there are a lot of interchangeable parts with a Surf/Hilux/4Runner, by replacing the front knuckles with 1st gen Surf/4Runner manual locking units. I've looked into this but haven't done this myself, so stand corrected here?
    And lastly James, please don't mention Ravs in the same sentence. They are good for wet, icy roads, and don't stand up to the rigours of Outback or African bush trails. They are more akin to a Honda CR-V!
