We love Kindergarten Math with Confidence and plan to use it again next year. It’s so practical and based on real life that I feel like Charlotte Mason would approve ☺️ it sounds like you found a good solution but just wanted to throw the idea out there for any other moms that may be struggling with math curriculum.
I’m happy you made this video even though I’m seeing it a year later! 😅 I’m a CM leaning homeschooler and have felt a certain level of pressure or like I ‘should’ use the Elementary Math series but I just kinda felt in my gut that it wouldn’t be a good fit and now I KNOW! I did not release it was a spiral approach. We started with spiral math and it does not work for my kids! They need more repetition to cement the concepts and I agree with them needing their facts memorized. After doing spiral math (TGTB) through 2nd grade we use the MATH U SEE AIM program for addition and subtraction (mostly used the addition portion) because they didn’t have their basic addition and subtraction facts memorized and it caused so much frustration for basic math! My 4th graders are using Apologia math (they used it for 3rd grade as well) and my preschooler and 1st grader are using Math With Confidence. They are both a lovely blend of mastery with review and hands on (manipulatives) and worksheets!
So glad this was helpful!! I know there can be pressure to be “all in” with the CM method, I’ve felt it also, but the beauty of homeschooling is that we can taylor our curricula to our children and make changes as needed. We know our children best! ❤️ Thanks for sharing about other math curricula. I hope it helps more people who are looking to switch out their math. Have a great homeschool year! ❤️
Thank you for this video. Its given me some pause for thought. I love SCM and use it, but I come from Rod and Staff math and have continued using much of what they've taught me through their teacher's guides alongside Elementary Arithmetic. I don't think I ever would've realized this without having watched this video. You may appreciate the fact that SCM recommended Math U See before their series came out. (other CM groups recommend it too - like Ambleside Online). Don't forget Charlotte Mason's students did have recitation so they would've reviewed their math.
We switched from SCM to Right Start. My son is twice exceptional and he was somehow managing to always get the answers right with SCM while not learning new concepts, and we both dreaded it. Now he asks to do math. It’s so refreshing. I’m glad you found a solution for your family too.
Thanks for sharing!! Hopefully that will help other families who are looking to switch. I have some friends that also use Right Start and love it- I’ve only heard good things about it. So glad your son is enjoying math now! It’s such a huge win knowing they WANT to do it!
Every child is different. ♥️ I'm making the opposite switch! Our oldest is HF ASD ( Asperger's) Math U See manipulatives are so distracting for him. He obsesses about why are they different colors. To the point where I have to switch to old school math.We are doings Rays arithmetic now. Yes, it's okay to switch it up! Teaching textbooks is awesome as well.
I think purchasing the videos on how they teach it, would’ve been helpful for you. It certainly was for me. CM math is a mastery program, not spiral. Perhaps the book isn’t very good in explaining that in itself. Just wanted to share another perspective ❤ I appreciate your time & opinions!
I noticed they’ve done a lot of work on the whole program recently! That’s wonderful. I love SCM and still recommend be who schoolers to look into them. I think there wasn’t much information on this math back when I purchased it. Thank you for clarifying that it’s mastery- it seemed to me to be spiral when I was using it. Thanks for commenting and giving your perspective! ❤️
Did u get teacher guide they provide? I've seen people change it up but instead of just following book questions and instruction, bring in game type teaching by using objects in the house to create fun practice. But fair, it is more simple and gentle than most maths curricula available. It's definitely more for a minimalist, slower approach I think.
I didn’t purchase “Mathematics: An Instrument for Living Teaching” because from the sample it appeared to be more philosophical rather than a guide on how to teach their math curriculum. I could be wrong on that assumption. It’s definitely very gentle and slow which is great for some families I’m sure. Math-U-See has been a better fit for us, and I’m finding that it still contains a lot of the “living” aspects of the Charlotte Mason method with the word problems and the application sheets. I still absolutely love Simply Charlotte Mason and use a lot of their curricula!

We started with SCM math for the school year as well. It was a lovely book but it just wasn't bringing joy to our homeschool either sadly. We needed more hands on and way more color to engage my kiddo.
@@peggystarling we tried several but ended up going with TGTB despite our initial hesitancy. It's not a popular choice but it's working for this year. I feel the fluff may become a distraction eventually and the older grades use online stuff. It's been neutral, but I'd like a more like minded company but finding ones that align more with reformed faith are hard. generations needs to make one :)

Thank you for sharing! 😃 I haven’t heard of that one, but it sounds like something worth looking into for sure.

@@peggystarling, Math-U-See was a top contender too. I think they’re both solid options.
Good job mama! It's hard&holy work we are doing! 🙌♥️
Yes it is! Thank you for the encouragement. ❤️ I hope your school year is going well!
We are using primer, alpha, delta, and pre algebra this year. We love this math curriculum.

Very helpful video! I can totally relate. I just purchased MUS and can’t wait to dive in! Thanks for sharing!

I agree that it truly is lovely. I hope they continue to improve it. What did you end up switching to?
