  • Encompassing over 1,000,000 acres, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is in peril from a proposed toxic copper mine on the park’s boundary. Patagonia ambassador Nathaniel Riverhorse Nakadate paddles through the northern Minnesota wilderness to give voice to a silent, pristine place.

Beautiful film. Truly breathtaking. And what a heartfelt narration! You could really hear his weathered soul, and the depths of his serenity in that natural environment. I find it hard sometimes, to come to terms with the fact that so few seem to value the natural world, so few recognise the power of nature to heal us, and connect us with our roots as individuals and as a species. We need nature, its coarseness, its unforgiving, unsympathetic exterior humbles us, keeps the hubris of mankind in check.

Beautifully filmed. Been to the Boundary Waters and Quetico a dozen times and look forward to many more trips to nourish the soul. The thought of it being polluted just breaks my heart. If you feel the same please align with “Save the Boundary Waters” and/or “Boundary Waters Action Fund” to stop the mining

The BWCA is the crown jewel of my home state, Minnesota. If you have never been, put it on your list for must visit places. It's one of "Nat Geo's 50 places of a lifetime" for a reason. This place is medicine to the soul. HUGE thanks to Patagonia for bringing light to what's going on in terms of Mining efforts!

Watching this was like a salve for the soul. The importance of protecting the Boundary Waters cannot be understated. I have been fortunate enough to experience the Boundary Waters in all of its beauty on two long trips - it's a sacred place, and one worth far more to the world than a thousand mines could ever make in a lifetime of revenue.

Reckless mining should never be allowed to happen. Before condemning mining though, we all must ask the question, "Where do my products come from and what processes were necessary to make and/or operate them?" We, as consumers, are providing the insatiable demand for copper and other mined materials. We all have cell phones. We all have a vast array of electronic devices. This guy in the video just amazes me. He drives into the area in a Range Rover. He has a flashlight on his head. He even lights his fire with a butane lighter. If he didn't drive from his home, then he probably flew there. Absolutely everything that he has done or used has been mined or produced in some fashion using mining or oilfield technology. And what mined metal do they have the most in common, the very metal that they are against having mines for, COPPER.
What a hypocritical stance. Patagonia has tried to put the blame on President Trump, when the true problems lay with us as consumers. They (Patagonia) have the same policy as most "Modern Environmentalists" do, "I've got mine, you can't have yours, because I know better than you." (That was paraphrasing Michael Criton from his book "STATE OF FEAR". A book that everyone should read, especially in the present time frame.) From the entirety of the drones being used to capture the cool overhead shots to the electrical lights used to navigate the waters before dawn or after dusk, they are made entirely from mined resources. The headband on his headlamp is probably synthetic. Even the canoe is partly synthetic. I watched the video from start to finish. People don't realize what their products are made from and what processes were used to make them. We need to all ask these questions, “Do I really need the newest iPhone or all my state of the art, electronic gadgetry? Do I really need a new car when mine is presently working just fine?” We all need to be part of the cure and not a contributing factor in the need for mined materials.

    • @mauricioleiva2450

That's a really good middle ground stance of realistic. Right in between pessimistic and optimistic. The fine line where yin meets yang. The universe operates in contradiction, light/dark, hot/cold, cause/effect, positive/negative...etc. I'm glad that there's people out there that can see the predicament we're facing as time goes on. We're living in an era where we've exposed the convenience of immediate, effortless gratification. As consumers and producers of waste, we have the hardest challenge ahead of us in the history of our humanity. Can it be done? Hell yeah. Is it going to be easy? Fuck no:)! Easy is what got us into this detriment. We are all locals of the same small dust pebble of a pond rock disco balling through this space and time. From a distance, our best is our worst, but if we can improve on our worst. Our best will naturally follow. So how do we convince the masses to invest in what's right? Inspiration over instruction. Appreciate the recommendation (book). Keep winning. Stay samurai. Sentients unite.

While i agree with not putting a mine there, i think if you’re going to make a video like this you should walk the walk as an environmentalist instead of cherry picking the easy stuff. The boundary waters are your paradise. Someone else’s paradise was destroyed to make the gas for that truck you’re driving. Someone else’s paradise was ruined by the meat and dairy industries that supplied your dinner. And even though you let that fish go, i bet it had a worse day than you. We should attack saving our planet and its animals from every angle, regardless of our convenience.
And btw, this is a complex issue. We NEED copper mines because we need electricity to triumph over fossil fuels (EVs use something like 5-10x as much copper wiring as gas cars). Of course a copper mine shouldn’t go there, but if it doesn’t go somewhere, we’ll never get off fossil fuels. Just something to think about.

    • @ryanlamont4417

Absolutely 100% correct. I love how people think all the precious metals on our phones and equipment used to produce this very video just came out of nowhere. NO!! It came from another MINE in someone else’s paradise. Out of site out of mind in this generation. Ignorance is bliss I guess. I love how people refuse to look at the bigger picture. Only what they are spoon fed because it seems most need to be told what to think and how to think about it. This is a way bigger issue than a copper and nickel mine.

@@ryanlamont4417 so what are you saying? that all mines are justified? that we should exploit every natural resource on this earth? That our natural resources don't matter and development takes precedence over everything? It is you who is ignorant. The only motivation for people like you is money because your minds are limited. You see no beauty in the natural world. To you life is cities and cars and fancy clothes and diamonds. To explain to people like you that life is so much more than material things is out of your comprehension.
