Ijohn Allison t really was like that. The grandstands shook with the stomping and the crowd in unison: Pre! Pre! ...I ran with him at Hayward Field twice during his workout; he was sprinting! for many laps; I could only hang with him for half a lap!
I was there at that race. Perhaps time has magnified things, but I recall Shorter taking off sooner and building a larger lead, perhaps 40 - 50 yards, and Pre winning by a substantial margin.
@@jacobsecody4288 I'm having second thoughts about the Pre chant. Maybe not. The Hayward crowd was pretty respectful, and Shorter was well liked. I may be confusing chanting with the rhythmic clapping that became prevalent at Hayward in later years. That was 50 years ago.
I was looking at the race lineups on the scoreboard (in the movie) and I remember every single one of the guys listed there. Tom McChesney being one of them. It's always bothered me that Pre died in a car wreck and then later the next local Oregon product (who actually broke Pre's 5000 meter record) and Tom's younger brother Billy...died in a car wreck.
I'd argue that he refused bc he knew he'd have absolutely no chance if he took the wind for another lap. His only chance was to sit back and draft off of Pre. Otherwise, Pre would've crushed him on the final lap.
Steve Prefontaine made Frank Shorter a better marathon runner. Loved them both.
"Pre's People" documentary tells story of Pre's roots in Coos Bay. Sheds light on what made him great!
RIP Pre. Great movie
such a tragic end to such a great young man's life - go pre!

I became a champion in running because Coach Navarro, Coach Wellman and Coach Adame. Always admire Pre
All time great movie scene

Did the crowd really chant pre?
@@jacobsecody4288 As I recall, the crowd always chanted, "PRE!".....at least for the home stretch.

I thought I saw you there.
This race is an amalgamation of the Finnish meet and the restoration race
This movie is amazing. The music and sound editing are both incredible.
RIP Steve Prefontaine you are beating running records in heaven now ❤
Ladies and gentlemen. Pre.
That's all that needed to be said ❤❤❤❤
I’m still pissed they didn’t give shorter a mustache. Highly inappropriate
Lindgren!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mistake at 3:10 - The stadium clock at right, "Duration Time," makes it seem like they're only 59 seconds into the race.
Lap time clock. Just to the left of the 59 only has a single digit option so it can't be total race time for the events. I love the movie.
My mistake, I had a look at an earlier part of the film and it was the race clock. Good call.
Great athlete.. just remember. Don't drink and drive.
Hey it was the 60s-and in OR. A different world than
😢
@Brad Ewart It's called County fair
Showed Tom McChesney he died tragically too.

Where is the black singlet?
what is this song?
Joe Walsh, County Fair
at 3:11 does Pre challenge frank or does frank refuse to take the lead?
Refuses
Naw pre challenges frank because pre is too proud which causes bowerman to smirk cus he knows how proud of a son of a gun he is.
Refuses
I'd argue that he refused bc he knew he'd have absolutely no chance if he took the wind for another lap. His only chance was to sit back and draft off of Pre. Otherwise, Pre would've crushed him on the final lap.
Where the Nigerians???
Sprinting, maybe?
The Nigerians did not make the U.S. scene till a few years later.
Kenyan's said 25 years later "hold my beer..."
