Bowerman's wry smirk and nod when he shows Pre the time is scarily reminiscent of the look my coach would give me when I ran a PB.

Amazing that Pre did this at only 21-one of a kind talent, great heart and the wisdom of Bowerman to coach him--George Young was no slouch either, a seasoned 3 time Olympian and medalist from 1968...tragic that he died so young.

What was Pre's last 800? Last 1600? I lost all my T&FN from the 70's in a basement flood. :(

I don't get why the negative splits wouldn't also wear pre out

He was trained for it. If you practice workouts that incorporate negative splits (as well as 'fartlecking' and solid speed work/sprinting workouts) then it's very easy to do this in a race. I did it a lot in the 3200m back in high school. Since I was naturally more of an 800m/1600m runner, I always ran the 3200m as a negative split race because the natural 3200m runners I was up against weren't used to the speed I threw in during the second half of the race. The only guys who were able to beat me were the few guys who were already well ahead of me anyway. But since I had the leg speed, I could easily chill for the first mile and then literally run away from everyone else during the second mile.
