Most M62TUB44 engines I have worked on have a relatively loose oil pump chain like this. I only adjusted the last engine I did because I adapted a BMW X5 engine to a 540i that had a bent valves engine. I adjusted the chain to be relatively loose like this, perhaps a hair tighter but still plenty of slack. The engine oil pump differs between X5 4.4 and 540i/740i 4.4, and I believe the chain for the X5 is a link shorter. I wouldn't rush to remove my oil pan to adjust my oil pump chain after watching this video, but that said I applaud the creators excellent efforts to help people who like to work on their vehicles themselves, be they mechanics or hobbyists or forced due to economics. My experience only, TL;DR: Don't worry too much if the chain is a bit slack, all of the ones I have worked on are too. The 10 MM is recommended, I believe it also allows for +2mm more if needed. Unsure if it allows for only 8mm (+ or - 2mm, 10mm being the target) for the total "side to side" slop. I read the manual as well on this and I read it the same, 10mm or so side to side slop. I have never seen a BMW have a failed oil pump on an M62 but perhaps it happens. Source BMW mechanic 5 years independent.

Thanks very much for your post spencer. You know your stuff and I appreciate you commenting. I would say the major reason to check the M62 series oil pumps are the infamous loosening oil pumps. While there makes sense to adjusts the chain if needed. If following a TCG fail it makes some sense to attempt to retrieve debris from oil pickup screen. I have also heard that the metal tube (looks like an open straw) in picture can get clogged so should be checked to make sure it is open (run a length of wire up through it).

What a great video. Thank you. Never new there was an adjustment there to be done prior to replacing the guides and tensioners

Did you have rattle noise before you went ahead and did this? I'm getting some chain rattle from the lower part of the engine when hot and I'm suspecting I have the same problem - slack in the oil pump chain so might give it a go and tighten it a bit if I can.

Op. Is it same for 2001 e38 740i? I have taping noise only when car is warmed up. What are thr symptom of lose chain with oil pump? Mine Sounds like lose chain or lifter when warmed up. Car sounds fine when cold start. Some tells me to do plugs and coil. Thanks

Does that oil screen come out by itself or is it part of the pump? All kind of things can get in there specially plastic from the timing guides. I want to clean it if I take the pan out

Do you only need to remove the lower oil pan to have this kind of access? Or also the upper oil pan?

      Just the lower oil pan.
