    I had a P0021 in my 01' 740i after doing a full timing guide replacement. I used the cheaper kit. As you probably already know, Bank 2 is driver side (in a LHD car). I removed and replaced the valve cover about 15 times, making small adjustments each time to the cam timing wheel/cog. Finally got this thing to work. I removed the torx in the front of the timing cover and a little at a time rotated the timing wheel, reassembled, cleared codes, started it, restarted it. If you have a P0021, you don't have to re-time it entirely (unless maybe you're off by a tooth, though not sure how you can really do that). I put a long punch through the timing hole (torx bolt hole in upper timing cover) and my correct timing was just on the right margin of the hole in the timing wheel. So, in other words, the punch was just right of center of the hole in the timing wheel.

    Nice to see these tools and how they are set up. I bought the G.A.S. set and have bought all the parts to do the job on my 2004 range rover but the boat shop has been nonstop and no time left for my own car, might have to wait until the end of the season to get the time. The guides have not blown out yet just that annoying vanos knock at idle I'm hoping every thing will hold together until it get the time. Thanks for the video.

    You know. Watching this video I realized why people don’t give more videos thumbs up. (I am definitely not insulting your video at all) most of the time when we make UA-cam videos we’ve done these jobs so many times we forget that people that have not done this job don’t understand it because they’re not doing it.
    I like the way you take the time to explain things. And I certainly do the same and my videos as well I like the video very much God bless keep up the good work

Thank you . I'm not trying to be rude

    Hi Nathan. I have a 2003 E53 X5 with the 4.4 litre M62TU engine. I have just replaced the spark plugs, fuel filter, valve cover gaskets, CCV, the radiator, the alternator diode rectifier, and several coolant hoses. My engine now idles rough, and has low power under throttle. INPA diagnostic software states that I have a misfire in cylinders 1, 2 and 5.
    Since putting it all back together, and getting rough idle, I have cleaned the spark plugs, put new spark plugs in, tried moving ignition coils around to different cylinders. The fault does not move with the ignition coils. Cylinders 1, 2 and 5 still have misfires. I have tried running the engine with the MAF sensor disconnected; engine still runs rough. I have tried spraying brake-parts cleaner on the engine manifold and vaccum hoses; I cannot find a vacuum leak.
    Any suggestions?

I took the connector for the tank vent valve I swap it with the vanos ...the vanos start working but now code for the tank vent Valve is on..I'm getting no power from the vanos wire connector..is that an ECU issue

    Thanks a million for all your excellent videos on BMW's. you have helped me save thousands over the years. But I am curious as to your experience, what is the longest time and most mileage ever recorded before chain guides wear out. I recently had the death rattle on 03 X5 4.4 on cold start only, so changed cam tensioner for first time and it cured noise. While I did valve cover gasket, I checked upper chain tensioner guide and saw no wear at all. I was considering doing chain guides since I had valve covers off, so given no visible wear, chain was tight again, I got curious as so many seen to have failures at half the mileage I have on mine which is 230K. Does not use more than half a quart between 7500 oil change intervals I use since new. Also, no valve guide issues of smoke on cold start which also seems common at half my mileage. So anyone have any input on this question?
    Thanks, FREE100KSECRET.com

    Nathan at 1531 you are torquing down the camshaft sprocket bolts. I saw a timing tool set that had an extension on the blocks that swung over and screwed down into the spark socket. This would guarantee no block slippage. My tool set (german one) does not have this spark socket contraption. Is it better? Do we need it to help hold down the blocks?

    have you ever figured out what that little removable plug is right above the cam sensor is for besides looking to see if the disc is lose?? It sure looks like we should be able to use it for setting the timing ! Well ...did my guides and everything else using the China kits..ran great for about 500 miles and then loud ticking, loss of power and P0012 code. Checked Vanos solenoid with 12v, works, swapped both cam sensors, disconnected each cylinder coils, RPM dropped but ticking still there.. checked the lifters all seem to be springy ..no sign of wear on cam lobs...so Auto solution kit is on its way and I ll be doing this again.. I dont have continuity test on the M62 for the 4.6is..I also rebuilt the Vanos seals, maybe bank 1 slipped ...be checking that too...I hope P0012 is related to the loud ticking.. as i have no lifter/cam lob clearance.. China kit anyone? lol I have one for sale...prob would feel bad selling it..

    I just completed the timing procedure and it runs but it sounds like it had a knock. Also the code is reading bank 1 intake over advance. I know the intake cam shifted slightly when I removed the blocks. So you think that is the issue? Others have suggested a position sensor

    Just used these GAS tools last night. Worked beautifully. The procedure is actually quite easy. Thoroughly cleaning/drying those torx cam bolts and their bores, then using Red Loctite IS very important. This is the best M62 timing How-To I've seen to date. Nice job!

    Nathan I have my pile of new parts for my e39 540i, and much of the engine and accessories are apart. Before I go further, I need help on the known problem areas on a 540i, at a dead stop; 1. Upper oil pan gasket will likely get torn for the exposed section, I bought an entire new gasket shall I cutout the section and replace the exposed section? 2. Jesus bolt, I bought the crankshaft pulley holder tool and a 3/4" large breaker bar. Confused if I should insert the locking pin before we pull hard on the bolt, or remove the bolt first, then insert the pin? RISK is shearing off the locking pin or bending the flywheel? Help. 3. Cant get the darn power steering pump out of the way properly. Some procedures say to move it aside, some remove the pressure hoses at the banjo bolts? What is best with least risk and mess? 4. I heard aligning the valve covers with the upper timing covers is a nightmare causing VCG leaks. Ideas? These are all show-stoppers for me, I want to ensure the timing and reassembly is done right the first time. Thanks!

    • @NathansBMWWorkshop
      @NathansBMWWorkshop  6 років тому

      The crank bolt has locktite on it so you will have to heat it up a little with a propane torch then it will come off easy, you wont break of the crank pin by prying against it, if the oil pan gasket rips just cut it level with the block and use sealer, if it dont break you can still reseal it with sealer, remove the whole power steering pump and be sure to use locktite when you reinstall the bolts or they will back out and snap the pump off

    Hey Nathan. So I have the timing chain tools. Bought them off of Amazon. Are you saying they will most likely cause a check engine light or is that only if you set them up incorrectly?

      What's do you think about this? Before removing the bolts on the tone rings, checking to see if the alignment tools are set correctly. If they aren't then you can adjust the vanos tools, retighten them and put them to the side until you're ready to set timing permanently. Just trying to come up with solutions for people that have bought these tools already. Your take?

    Hi Nathan I'm having a problem just finished putting everything together won't start .I had a problem every time I remove the lock off the vanos cam it moves a quarter turn I haven't seen you do this or show y the intake cam turns on its own tbrew the timingboff and 50 psi compression..I put the nut with the pins in and it moves back and forth almost a quarter then tbe exhaust cam finally starts to move what is causing this

    • @NathansBMWWorkshop
      @NathansBMWWorkshop  6 років тому

      The cam will snap back when you remove the blocks, that is normal, if it wont start check the fuse by the ecu in the small 5 fuse holder

      Nathan's DIY Garage so your saying that even if the cam moves off almost 45 degress its ok. But once its catches the exhaust csm it throwa the timing off then again im not removing the torx bolts so i gotta do that first ive been trying to remove them with cast impact torx but uts a long one im losing leverage whats the best way to put the chain on
