      That sounds like a great project! A well-designed heater can definitely make your garage much more comfortable. Just make sure to follow all safety guidelines, especially if you're using it for an extended period. What kind of heating setup are you planning to use?

      That idea would be good, but I would suggest enclosing it and having a chimney to let out any carbon monoxide and using a heat exchanger with a fan to disperse heat ... it can easily be done with some old pipes and a few extra sheets of steel... also, if you design it well, you can also cook on top of the enclosure like you would on a woodstove... this is one that I've actually been wanting to build for some time now myself...

    Let’s all make one, cos I,m sure we all have welding equipment in a cupboard somewhere just in case we have a one in a million chance to make something. I think mines under the sink next to the plans for building the Borg motherships.

      Haha, sounds like you've got quite the stash of "just-in-case" equipment! It’s always fun to think about those ambitious projects that seem a bit far-fetched. Who knows, maybe one day you'll find that inspiration to build something incredible! Until then, at least you’ve got a good sense of humor about it! What’s the next big project on your radar?

    Does the oil need be new oil or used oil? Can you also heat a small area with this? Would it need to be pipped?

    • @lmtn
      @lmtn  3 місяці тому +2

      Used oil can be used for heating, but make sure it is free of harmful impurities. This device can heat a small space, but needs good ventilation. If you want to use ducting to distribute the heat, this can help to heat more evenly, especially if connected to a radiator. Make sure the system can handle the temperatures and materials involved.

    Everything is muuuuch easier. High pressure (oxygen or so) steel cylinder, cut in chimney on top, air inlet 10 cm from bottom, service cutout to clean it, steel or copper pipe on the half height for dripping fuel to the centre of the cylinder. 30 min with oxycut and its done.
    If it is for clean fuel (kerosene, duesel) it will work by itself, on chimney draft. For waste oils (food or lube) air supply blower required. Enjoy. Proven Soviet era solution for Arctic conditions, where is really cold and nothing handy beyond very basic industrial parts like cylinders and pipes.

    • @lmtn
      @lmtn  3 місяці тому

      That sounds like a clever and practical design! Using a high-pressure cylinder really maximizes efficiency, especially in harsh Arctic conditions. I love how you've adapted a proven solution to modern needs. Have you had any personal experience with this setup? I’d be interested to hear how it performs in real-world scenarios!

      These types of burners require a powerful air blower to inject copious amounts of oxygen to increase the burn temperature, this creates a cleaner flame too, without a blower you'd basically have a chip pan fire (if you could even get it hot enough to self sustain)
      Traditional oil burners usually have a thick steel block which requires pre heating with a blowtorch to attain the flash point, from that point the oil supply valve is opened up to provide a steady thin stream of oil directly onto that heated block.
      Once ignition has begun the air supply is switched on and it becomes self sustaining because the flames heat also preheats the oil before it makes contact with the steel block (it's the same principle as a blacksmith's furnace, they all need air injection to raise the temperature and burn cleanly).
