I'm listening to this because I love this book. Trust me, when you grow up you'll realize this is an amazing story and not just something to do for a school project.
Dear Chutney Bucket, With all due respect, the book 'The Giver' is a racially motivated attack at the Southern Italian population of Australia. There are several horrific homophobic themes throughout, and I was honestly flabbergasted when reading the 'releasing' of the babies, which brought me to my knees in tears. I think you need to strongly consider getting in touch with me Chutney, as I am eager to further discuss this book in the mix of the pack. I would love to set-up an interview, and 'vent' my thoughts on this book. Cheers, Oswaldo Gimp
Not reading for school. I am a retired school psychologist and am reading it because it is profound. I listen to audiobooks because I am handicapped now and have difficulty with hard copy. I wish I could read hard copy easily as I once did. I prefer holding the book and turning the pages.
It’s not the same is it!! I loved reading but suffer with poor eyesight and whilst listening to audio book is a blessing I get “bored” if that makes sense. When reading your hands are holding and turning, your eyes are reading and your brain is engaged. It’s three dimensional. Listening is one dimensional, your eyes are looking at something else and your hands are redundant too it’s just not the same. I used to love be getting into bed early and settling down to a good book but now, because I still need it to be three dimensional I listen whilst doing the ironing or tidying so my hands and eyes are busy too. Or I love listening in the dark at night because my brain excepts that it’s just listening…… but I fall asleep and have to start over the following night. That’s the beauty of short stories 😂

I remember reading this book when I was "an 11" and I still remember using my imagination to envision their community. As I listen to this today, I still remember (and am taken back) to that same world and exactly how I remembered it. Reading the text will help imprint the story into your mind much more so than listening to the story, I'm here to refresh my recollection and it really "takes you back." And that's why today's youth should read this book in print form first.
I agree. I read this book when I was around 12 years old as it was part of the school curriculum. It's so different listening to it now at 18 years of age! And nostalgic!

Try doing something else whilst listening, I do ironing, tidying or driving. I also find it hard to just sit n listen. I was an avid book reader and have read probably over a thousand and it’s much easier to sit and read as opposed to listening because your hands and eyes are busy too and I find it near impossible to just sit and just listen whilst my hands and eyes sit idol😂 however it’s the easiest way to complete tasks when you’re listening to an audiobook, it also helps to quiet a busy mind or counter depression because it’s your mind that’s busy and your eyes n hands will welcome the task. It also helps massively with worry or anger because doing chores helps you to listen and listening helps you forget your woes long enough to give your brain and emotions a rest. Listening whilst walking is also a great way to concentrate on the story, whilst relieving the brain of worry n stress, the exercise is an added bonus too.

7th Grade English. 2007-2008 10 damn years ago we had to read this. I understood the story, but not the subtle nuances and the oddity of this dystopian world. It never occured to me what kind of hell it would be to live in it.

The Giver, a mesmerizing work of literature by Lois Lowry, stands as a true masterpiece that evokes profound questions about society, individuality, and the boundaries of human experience. With its richly woven narrative, this dystopian tale takes readers on a spellbinding journey through a meticulously crafted world that leaves an indelible mark on the imagination. Set in a seemingly utopian society, the story focuses on twelve-year-old Jonas, a boy chosen to receive memories of the past from the community's wise yet enigmatic Elder, the Giver. The novel unfolds as Jonas embarks on his training, delving into the depths of an extraordinary gift of knowledge that reveals both the beauty and cruelty of the human experience. Lowry's writing captivates from the very first page, painting a vivid picture of a society stripped of emotions, where individual choices are limited, and conformity is paramount. Her prose is simple yet profound, allowing readers to feel an intimate connection with Jonas and the struggles he faces as he questions the very foundation of the world he thought he knew. The depth of character development in "The Giver" is truly remarkable. Jonas evolves from an innocent and naive child to a young individual awakened to the true meaning of life, love, and the importance of human connection. The supporting characters, including Jonas' best friend Asher, his love-interest Fiona, and the wise and mysterious Giver himself, add layers of complexity and humanity to the narrative, making each interaction and revelation all the more significant. What sets this novel apart is Lowry's ability to tackle profound and thought-provoking themes. She scrutinizes the inherent dangers of a society that seeks to eliminate pain, fear, and choice, ultimately questioning the loss of human identity that comes with such total control. Lowry masterfully exposes the consequences of a world devoid of color, art, music, and individualism, leaving readers grappling with the fundamental questions of what it truly means to be alive. While "The Giver" primarily resonates with the young adult audience, its themes and messages transcend age. The novel encourages readers to reflect upon their own society and consider the importance of individuality, free will, and the power of memory. In conclusion, Lois Lowry's "The Giver" is a brilliant and thought-provoking masterpiece that casts a spell on readers, prompting us to question the very fabric of our existence. Lowry's elegant prose and deeply engaging characters lead us on an unforgettable journey, causing us to contemplate our own beliefs and values. This book deserves a place among the finest works of dystopian literature, leaving a lasting impact on all those fortunate enough to embark on its profoundly moving pages.
Oh great I had to read this for school and now I’m gonna want to know what happens next and read the whole series I swear they do this on purpose they did it last year too not too sad tho like reading but I swear they are doing this on Purpose
I read this book in school and then watched the movie. This book/movie was amazing and life changing. If you have read it or watched it and you think it wasn’t good, listen to this. Imagine the world without color or emotions. The world would be joyless, no love, no beauty... If you haven’t read or watched The Giver, please listen to this audio book here and watch the movie. This book changed my life to not take things for granted. This changed my life. I hope it changes your too. And also... don’t take things for granted! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I was in high school when i was assigned this book, and i barely cared about it at that time but once i finished the book and understood it, it automatically became my most fav book EVER. I thank my teachers today for having me read this in school, i am 28 today and still love this book, read its sequels, watched the movie. Ahhh its beautiful. I actually came on this to help me fall asleep💜
I hope whoever’s listening to this for school is enjoying it. Wish I had this option back then - maybe I did, but the concept of audiobooks eluded my 12 year old brain. Now I’m “a 28” and just randomly remembered this book and wanted to read (or rather, listen) to it again.
is anyone else here sad that all the comments are about whether or not people are listening to this book because its for school or just for fun, and not talking about how good it is?
Honestly, I did this for a school thing, and I still genuinely love it. I love how the righting is quick, and things move on at such a nice pace. And I love how they still fit enough expressive writing to make you feel the way the characters feel. Lois Lowry is amazing!
I rarely have favorites, but I would say this is my favorite book. It's a wonderful commentary on holding "security" over "freedom" while also being a reminder of the beauty that exists in the world from both pain and joy. It is very calming for me to read. Every time I read it, I am left feeling content, hopeful, and inspired.
Wow! WAKE UP! THIS IS HELL ON EARTH DESCRIBED IN THIS PROPAGANDA PIECE! Exactly where "they" are pushing the world right now....through "safety".....from the latest boogeyman!!!!
@@kellyanneree3252 Not sure, but I think you may have misunderstood my perspective. To put it plainly, one man who stopped lying could bring down tyranny, which is inspiring and calming. Freedom over security any day, that's where the true beauty is, as shown in the book.
Wow, just WOW ! What an enthralling book ! The reader is exceptional as well. My guess is this is one of his favorite books. I listen to audio as I am legally blind with PTSD & this book help me en-rapt the whole way through.
Homeschool mom, I assigned it to my son but had never read it. Thankful for this recording as I am out of extra minutes to read. Thank you so much. Good story. Much to think about.
Kids this is one of the best books you will ever read in school and deals with bigger issues than you might understand or be interested in at this time. Many parents have tried to get this book banned for dealing with real issues. I don't expect you to be interested in every book you read in school but you should know that books are not homework or tests. You should be curious and want to read and learn and talk about it.
@@mr.eeee3eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee837 i never read scythe! looks like it came out after i graduated highschool, i'll have to check it out. i know it's sterotypical but i loved almost all of ray bradbury and h.g. well's books lol.. and i was in school while the hunger games came out so that era is a big memory of mine.. one that's not as common that i loved was this one called "the windup girl", it's more scifi than dystopia but it came out around the time i was reading a lot of this stuff and it always stuck with me. most of the ones i started with were older than i am tho lol so def dig thru the classics if u haven't already.
In 8th grade (I'm a junior) we had 2 hours for ELA for 2 weeks in a row, then switch to math for two weeks, but yet we only read 5 pages a day. the rest of the time we were analyzing it. We got to the start of the dramatic part (saw almost all color), and stopped reading. I was SOOOO mad. I was looking forward to the end. My teacher said that it was irrelevant to the reason we were reading it: The difference between a Utopia and a Dystopia. I am just now "reading" all the way to the end.
The teacher announced my biggest disappointment in the most annoying way too: this is the start of the best part. But it is irrelevant. So you will have to wonder because we are not reading it as a class.
Everyone here is saying how they were forced to read this book, I was too but this is honestly the best books I have ever read! Great job whoever read this :)

I read this book in school and then watched the movie. This book/movie was amazing and life changing. If you have read it or watched it and you think it wasn’t good, listen to this. This is a really good reading, I love the emotion and how it wasn’t monotone. Very nice !!
I hope whoever’s listening to this for school is enjoying it. Wish I had this option back then - maybe I did, but the concept of audiobooks eluded my 12 year old brain. Now I’m “a 28” and just randomly remembered this book and wanted to read (or rather, listen) to it again.
Wow, at the end I was expecting another three hours from the video! I was SHOOK!

I rarely have favorites, but I would say this is my favorite book. It's a wonderful commentary on holding "security" over "freedom" while also being a reminder of the beauty that exists in the world from both pain and joy. It is very calming for me to read. Every time I read it, I am left feeling content, hopeful, and inspired.
hello can you pls explain the book al little bit i dont understand the book

I agree. It's one of my favourites. Takes a deep perspective to like these kinds of books.

@@kellyanneree3252 Not sure, but I think you may have misunderstood my perspective. To put it plainly, one man who stopped lying could bring down tyranny, which is inspiring and calming. Freedom over security any day, that's where the true beauty is, as shown in the book.

I've always loved this book especially when I first read it in school I was so happy when I finally found a real copy, I read it almost every day!

i know it's sterotypical but i loved almost all of ray bradbury and h.g. well's books lol.. and i was in school while the hunger games came out so that era is a big memory of mine..
one that's not as common that i loved was this one called "the windup girl", it's more scifi than dystopia but it came out around the time i was reading a lot of this stuff and it always stuck with me.

I remember reading this for school years ago, it was one of the good ones. Now I'm listening to it to sleep :)
The teacher announced my biggest disappointment in the most annoying way too:
this is the start of the best part. But it is irrelevant. So you will have to wonder because we are not reading it as a class.
