Your video surprised me so I did a bit more googling around and it seems I'm not the only one - the coolness/warmth of Mars black is not the same across all brands! FWIW I'm using Maimeri Acryclic Mars Black
Mars black is a form of iron oxide. Iron oxide can range from brown to black so perhaps the brown/red colour is coming from residual brown red iron oxide that hasn't been separated out. Also off topic but black iron oxide is magnetic. It's just something kinda cool 😎
thank you mr. wolf for the idea of this black comparison. however, when you used the clear handle brush to add more ivory black to the top swatch using the same clear handled brush then moved down to the mars black (@2:08) using same brush without washing out the other black imho you contaminated the results.
You explained that well. I have Ivory black and noticed it had a gray tint to it. I did a swipe tonight with my ivory black background and metallics foreground. Payne's gray is beautiful I'll have to look for that on my next trip to Hobby Lobby.
I use mars black also but it really doesn't matter in my opinion now I read in an art magazine one artist said he dose not use black paint because over time it will start to fade over time he said he makes his own black paint by mixing blue brown and a hint of grey and I tried it and it works so if you don't have any black paint you can make your own just a thought

thats called the Vanta black, there is possible to buy acrylic version online, It costed me like 30$ together with shipping, for a small bottle lol was really worth to try out tho

I would like to apologize because paint and painting my ignorance is about to be revealed with this question but only because I started playing with it. My question is why did you pick yellow to mix with the black, understand the white, but the yellow? Or did you just want to mix the black with another color and randomly chose the yellow? Also at the start of the video you stated the paint was all the same brand or something but not what that brand was. Could you please share what paint brand you were comparing and demonstrating the blacks with? Thanks
I live in Maine literally can not find payne's grey anywhere locally can you tell me how to mix it out of colors I already have guessing one of the colors would be like ultramarine or phthalo blue
Hello Leslie! Sorry to hear you can't fine Payne's Grey. It's a very blue grey for sure. Best bet is to mix a dab of white with black and add a touch of phthalo blue (not too much). : )

The closest pigment to payne's grey is vine black which is also bluish.

I mix my Payne's Grey with black and dark blue paint, with a little white mixed in. To me, PG looks more like blue-black than dark grey.
Half Mars black and half ultramarine blue is quite close to Payne's grey

you don't test by adding white, ridiculous, brush it out with water or turps instead of bringing in another pigment, useless post.
