      That's funny! Is the black paint for the same painting that contains purple? Lol! 😀

      Chris Breier No, I finished that one, lol. I was playing around with black paint the other day and I find that Golden Fluids Carbon Black really makes a dark black, and flows easily and smoothly

    That was 5 minutes well spent. Quick, to the point, with all the relevant questions covered. You might want to leave the ends screen for a few more seconds. I had to rewind the previous video and watch the commercial again because I wasn't fast enough to click on the video after you were done talking.
    Thanks again. Actually answered an issue I had with an ivory black painting that looked warmer than I expected.

    Interesting comparison, and well done Chris! But I think it would have been more conclusive if all three were the same brand. Some Golden acrylic colors have been tested on YT and shown to have more pigment than Liquitex. This might have influenced the results a bit.

      Good point! In my video about mixing pink I briefly talk about how much alizarin crimson varies between brands.

    Exactly what I was looking for. You may have made an auditory type when you said that the ivory black was cooler in one of the experiments.

    Wouldn’t the carbon black be considered having the strongest shading strength?
    The titanium tints the black but the black would shade the white and any colors it gets mixed with.
    Otherwise I was today’s years old when I learned Mars black is magnetic.

    • @ChrisBreier
      @ChrisBreier  3 роки тому

      Yes, I think in the video I say the Carbon Black has the highest tinting strength.

    Golden also has a black called animal black, how does it compare to the golden carbon black?

    • @ChrisBreier
      @ChrisBreier  10 місяців тому +1

      I couldn't find animal black in Goldens color charts, but they do have bone black which is made from charred animal bones. The pigment code for bone black is PBk9, which is the same as the Ivory Black from Liquitex. So I would think it would be very similar….there’s so many different black pigments to keep track of! 😅

    Im yet to make up my mind on OPEN Carbon B vs Ivory B. I feel like the Ivory is best for mixing, but bad for the excess transparency (open ivory is semi-transparent as oposed to regular HB ivory black which is semi-opaque). My gut feeling tells me that carbon diluted with + open medium should be the best overall, to be opaque and good mixer... But idk

    • @ChrisBreier
      @ChrisBreier  4 роки тому +1

      In the OPEN line of acrylics, I decided on the Carbon Black instead of the Bone Black . Another option is to mix your own black, the transparency/opacity will depend upon which colors you start with. In another video I demonstrate 11 ways to mix black. ua-cam.com/video/ZlMXp2WSy4s/v-deo.html

    What about Golden Bone Black ? Also, what about Holbein Lamp Black?

    • @ChrisBreier
      @ChrisBreier  Рік тому

      Ivory Black and Bone Black often have the same pigment number which is PBk9 so I think they're probably the same thing. There's some overlap between Carbon Black PBk7 and Lamp Black PBk6 too. They're both made from burning gas or oil. I looked up the acrylic color chart from Holbein and their Lamp Black is made from PBk7 which is what Golden uses for their Carbon Black...so I would assume they're similar.

    Which one is more glossy though?

    • @ChrisBreier
      @ChrisBreier  2 роки тому +1

      Liquitex seems to have a consistent sheen, Golden varies by each color. I think all three black paints were similar but I’d have to check the samples though….

    Nice Video Chris! What are your thoughts on using black paint vs mixed black (like Ultramarine Blue + B.Umber), for acrylics? I don't have black paint, but only because I didn't thought I need it and I'm pleased with my results using a mixed black. I live in Brazil so ordering online takes time and a lot of money, so generally I only order what i'm certain i'll like, if that's even possible, lol. But that said, between those 3 options, Mars, Ivory and Carbon, I would stick to the Ivory cause its the least tinting strength, in other words, easiest to mix and not get a lot of black all over. Thanks

    • @ChrisBreier
      @ChrisBreier  4 роки тому +1

      renatonf - thanks! I usually mix my own black, I like being able to leave some color in it and it’s one less color that I have to squeeze out on the palette. I sometimes use black paint as a shortcut if I need a large volume of black paint and I don’t feel like mixing it. I agree that it’s easier to work with pigments that have a lower tinting strength. Phthalo Blue has high tinting strength so a small dab of it can easily overpower a color mixture. Carbon Black is kind of like that. As for saving money, it depends upon which colors you use to mix black. In the professional line of acrylics the black pigments are usually in the cheapest series. 🎨

    • @renatobfa
      @renatobfa 4 роки тому

      @@ChrisBreier Yeah, exactly. I agree. I also push the black in some direction too... I was tempted at buying a tube of ivory black just because I almost always paint dark to light, so I usually start a painting squeezing UB+BU, mixing a black, and as the painting goes, i usually push it a little towards blue, or burnt umber, or even red or green, depends on the subject.... But, the fact is, i do use mix black to start with, and I usually have to mix some more as the painting goes. But, I don't have any experience with the handling properties of mixing pure Ivory Black with other colors, in comparison to the handling properties of mixing UB+BU with other colors. Does it behave differently, or is it more or less the same thing? BTW, i'm also planing to use the OPEN acrylics, they are already on their way! Maybe you could compare those 3 Blacks with the popular mixed black from UB+BU. Thanks

    • @ChrisBreier
      @ChrisBreier  4 роки тому +1

      Interesting question! I just tested it, and the mixture of Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna is slightly lighter than Ivory Black. I then tried mixing Burnt Umber with Ultramarine Blue and it’s just about as dark as Ivory Black, I mean the difference is very slight. I also tried a color mixing test-I mixed Ivory Black with Napthol Red LIght and it created a nice brown. I got the exact same shade of brown by mixing the Utramarine/Burnt sienna mixture with Napthol Red LIght. So I don’t think you’re missing out on anything. The process you describe makes perfect sense to me. Open acrylics definitely changed the way I paint. They stay wet long enough so that can create smooth gradients and soft edges. It may take awhile to get used to them. I may make a more in depth video about how I use them.

      @@ChrisBreier Chris, let me ask you another question regarding OPENS. Do they have noticeble color shift as other acrylics? I'm having terrible color shift in mine, but thats because i'm still using the liquitex basics. But, compared with other artists grade acrylics and golden HB, how does the OPEN compare in this regard? thanks

    • @ChrisBreier

      In the video, I compared these 3 black pigments and they all have about the same darkness. I checked Golden's website and they say "Mixing Quinacridone Crimson with Phthalo Green blue shade will almost magically produce one of the deepest blacks imaginable." I just tried mixing these two colors myself and it doesn't really look any darker than the 3 black pigments I tested in the video. Keep in mind that gloss black will look darker than matte black.
