    You got my name right. :) Thanks so much for this first impressions video. I'd love to see more shorts like this of other things you discover in C64 OS. And I totally dig the red breadbin. The original color stripe you left is also very nice.

      We found where you said it so we could pronounce it correctly! Much thanks for the wonderful OS and the extra help. Taylor picked out that red and painted it herself. (It looks even better in person.) We are thrilled you like the video!

    I've been thinking about getting this after watching Retro Recipes video on it. I do have a C128 with GEOS 128 that I really like though. Y'all should really get JiffyDos for y'all's 64. I have it on my 64 and 128 and it is just way faster loading anything. It's also a period correct upgrade. I got my JiffyDos from Retro Innovation. I just got the ROM images and programed my own EPROM. They do sell the IC with a switch on it ready to go plug and play too. It's really inexpensive. There is also an adapter to use a PS/2 mouse with with the commodore. I think it's called PS/2 to 1351 adapter or something like that. I think you can find that adapter on eBay. Y'all ladies keep up the great work keeping the retro/vintage computers alive!

    I applaud efforts toward trying to make an interface similar to a GUI... However, a text based menu system that doesn't require a joystick and moves between normal operations easily would be better. Interactive System Productivity Facility (ISPF) on the IBM mainframe (TSO) allowed users to jump between so many functions and with practice you could "fast track" from one menu several layers in to another several layers in without traversing the menus. It's so useful it's still in use. I feel that GUIs and the like impede the development of better command development. Since BASIC 2.0 was bad enough, almost any file loader would help. Those included in BASIC 3.5 on the C16 and Plus/4 or in BASIC 7 on the C128 are vastly better - but it prompts the question, with the Super Expander 64 and Simons' BASIC, could better choices have not been made? The entirety of of the past UI of the C64 is called into question when a modern product like this one comes along, and we ask ourselves - "What could we do better?"

    Brilliant that people are putting so much effort into making s/w of this calibre for an old 8-bit… they’ve (Greg?) has managed so much there you have to wonder where all the horse-power of a modern machine goes… well, apart from the pile of gigabyte bloat mainframe-style terminal app that is your average web browser these days.

    Yaow! Great to see another retro computing channel with female host(s) - I've literally seen only one before this, I stumbled on this video seeing it in UA-cam's recommendations, and watching it I almost instantly subscribed and enabled notifications of new videos!
    Unfortunately, even though you nowdays see more females in tech and in tech podcasts, they are still too under represented - and one big reason is that because of cultural reasons many females were duped into thinking that this wasn't for them; and they were not always welcomed with open arms either. Despite the fact that one of the most important pioneers of modern computers, a person who could see the potential, visionary who thought of computers that would show images, etc. at a time when the very early computers were *mechanical*, not electric, despite that this person was a woman - I'm of course talking of Ada Lovelace! \o/
    And the paint job on the breadbox is so totally balls to the wall awesome!! \,,/_[>

    • @fractalMD
      @fractalMD Рік тому +1

      When we surveyed the land before starting this adventure, there was definitely a sad lack of female representation. Still a loooooong way to go, but we are happy to be doing our part. Even if one person realizes she can do this cause she saw us we will be happy campers.

    Really need ot use a mouse with it. But I still don't understand how this will make C64 better? Unless there are app and games that take advantage of this new OS then there is little point to it.

    • @fractalMD
      @fractalMD Рік тому +1

      It's still so new. I think the rest will follow.

    • @robsku1
      @robsku1 Рік тому +1

      That's a fair question. The C64 OS has some very basic applications, like you would expect from the OS itself - of course it also has an API for 3rd party applications.
      I remember in the early latter half of 90's when there was a OS war between Windows (95, then 98) and OS/2 WARP 4 for who gets to dominate end user desktop OS market. I was betting on OS/2 because of it's technical superiority (and it ran old 16-bit Windows applications better than both 16-bit Windows itself and 32-bit Windows 9x) because I was young and naive and still believed that obviously the quality of OS would determine the winner. I mean, everything else is just bananas, but apparently the world doesn't run on sanity.
      Lack of new software for end user market caused OS/2 to lose and in less than year I very reluctantly moved back to Win95, which I had already learned to hate.
      There's no such war on C-64. GEOS does exist, as does the Contiki C-64 OS with graphical windowing desktop UI, but not many are making software for it. The author of the OS can't alone create a software collection for this OS and I'm sceptical whether there will be enough developers interested in creating C64 OS applications instead of just making regular standalone applications, but that's just probability guestimation on my part - in the end whether there will be enough applications to make this a viable choice for at least some C-64 users will depend wholly on developers interest on creating applications for it.
      For this to happen, I have to say that the best thing that could be done to increase it's possibility of success would be to give away the software for FREE - and only require payment for the physical package, with manuals, SD card, etc. So that the digital download of the software and manual would be cost free.
      If it was me, I would view it more important to try improve it's chance of succeeding than insisting on getting paid for every (legal) copy of the OS - especially when at least at this point of it's life it's not going to create enough income to live off it. But then I'm also a FOSS developer who is not motivated by profits, and the C64 OS developer has full right to decide how to do this, and it doesn't seem that he is interested in releasing it as FOSS, or even as Freeware. Sadly I don't think it will have that big chance of becoming big with limiting the number of possibly interested developers to those who are willing to spend money on this product that's chance of success they might not see as a big one.
      I would love to be proven wrong more than anything and I encourage all developers who are willing to buy this product to try and develop application for it.
      But this is just my lengthy view about this. I hope it will be able to generate at least moderate amount of developer interest.

    I seem to be missing something. Why should we have to get Jiffy DOS and an SD2IEC? Gregory should play nice with Evie so we can boot it right from BackBit. It's currently out of stock on his website but us BackBit users could do an online order to get the files and manual instantly. In modern times, EVERYTHING should be BackBit compatible. If any readers here haven't used one, your missing out :) I think the BackBit and this C64OS could be the most essential accessories for any every modern C64 user. Everything else can get in line.
