It really does help us old punks. Never heard the phrases "TV Girl" or "male manipulator" in my life. In fact, I have a theory that NeoPunkFM make up a couple of pieces of slang every video, just to keep older people confused and angry.
Tv girl is actually known to be openly being cynalist and most of the songs are kind of a reflection, To give an example, the chorus of Birds Don't Sing explicitly talks about how his ex left him without warning or explanation. On the other hand, the verses clearly show him being an asshole and not listening to her, giving us the explanation behind their breakup that the singer has failed to grasp. So to me, the song is really about how it's hard to see your own flaws sometimes and it's much easier to pretend that the people who "wronged" you had no reason to do so, and there was nothing you could've done to prevent it. A song criticizing its own protagonist. I genuinely thought this was intentional.
I also think that's similar to "Song About Me" where the first couple verses make it seem like the guy suffered a terrible breakup and the girl was an asshole, until Maddie's verse where you find out it's all a narrative he's built up inside his head to make himself the victim

The "problematic" word lost its original meaning. Now people just throw different accusations on any public person, without any investigation or proof. It is bad in the sense that it’s just another promotion of listening to music digitally rather than going out on buying the album, which would actually benefit the artist. For example, often it’ll just be one or two really random “outlier songs” from an album that get big (or even just a clip from the songs) rather than the album becoming popular, and because people are hearing these individual songs on tiktok and then listening to those individual songs on Spotify or SoundCloud, the artist isn’t benefiting because people aren’t listening to their whole discography and buying the music. But it can be a good thing if someone actually likes their entire discography after discovering the artist through tiktok, and then decides to buy the music. So it’s complicated I guess

as a very avid tv girl listener, tv girl kinda feels like a sarcastic take on misogynistic men's worldview. i've listened to tv girl for years and have loved their music through and through edit 11/7/23: ty for the likes! i want to offer a bit more of an explanation into my thinking, i keep checking back on this comment randomly and getting surprised im still practically the top comment anyways, im autistic, sarcasm isnt usually something i understand well. HOWEVER, the misogynistic character of tv girl isnt exactly, just, sarcasm. the main 'character' throughout the songs is just that, a character, not just a sarcastic joke. this is a trope being portrayed through music that has people that fit the trope in real life. its like watching a movie almost but in song. other autistic people might understand where im going with the movie thing LOL but ya, its like recognizing all the patterns / tropes in a movie and knowing whats going to happen in it because of that. you can just kinda tell at some point that the tv girl character is a misogynist after listening to their music long enough. i dont really see how you can overlook it edit 12/7/23: checking back up on this comment again, agree with the first replier's edit :]
It's like the kids can't understand irony these days, it's so confusing. Did we pass through too much post-irony that sincerity is the only thing people understand?
that’s what i thought! in songs like Every Stupid Actress or Not Allowed the lyrics are so blatantly or straightforwardly misogynistic that it’s clearly ironic/sarcastic
I like when people have a similar music taste as me but in terms of dating that's a red flag, I listen to too much turnover and balance and composure, 90% chance you're a crazy person if you listen to the same
I'm sorry but listening to certain music does not define what kind of person you are. My lanky history teacher who only wears sweaters, stands in perfect posture and is always polite and sensible only listens to death metal.
It depends. Lots of people who listen to Summer Walker, Sexy Red, etc are living the lift style they sing about. Death metal is notorious for people of all types liking them, so it’s not a good comparison compared to other genres. You really think Taylor Swift fans aren’t living the life she sings about? The reason why many of these artists have fans is because they connect to their music. Wither because it sounds good, or they relate to it.
i feel like people at least at a surface level understand the misogyny present in the weekend’s discography and world he’s created. tv girl is not as opaque with its depictions of women and its joking philosophy on intimacy and dating present throughout their music. i could probably give a dissertation on every example of misogyny and misogynoir in the weeknd’s music but tv girl lore is comparably a little bit more difficult to grasp so people toss the blanket statement of male manipulator music over it without dissecting it further

i feel like tv girl actually has more fans who are women who complain the music is misogynistic. i’m under the assumption it’s satire and people are just afraid to admit they like music that is “problematic” without writing a thesis on why it is as they give money to the artist by using their audios. just like how lana del rey and marina also had satirical albums and the point flew over young female audiences heads. or courtney love, who has an entire “riot grrrl” tiktok fanbase who claims to hate but dresses exactly like and will not stop talking about her.
another case: i've always said that the 1975 is to men what taylor swift is to women. the taylor fanbase might kill me for this but hear me out. (im excluding matty's actions outside of music) the 1975's music is often called misogynistic but taylor's music is hardly ever called misandrist even though they both aren't. the 1975 is just the teenage boy experience. yes, teenage boys are horny and make bad decisions, they're not like taylor swift's girls who are conserved and indulge in classy poetry and going through heartbreaks. but if im nitpicking through both of their music, i can easily take a lot of lyrics out of context to make both of them look bad. especially lana del rey, my god. i love all of their music though, and none of them deserve to be called misogynist or misandrist.
I like what you used to build your point but its NOT the same thing , Have you seen the history books ? Men have a bad reputation Any “satire” against women just feels way too literal and its simply put unfunny.

As a long-time TV Girl listener, I’ve always viewed their music as satirically intuitive, suggesting that they’re aware of the sarcastic yet often true nature of the lyrics. Every TV Girl song tells a story, one about love, loss, and/or misfortune in romance. What I find appealing about them is that they are an all male band whom writes about relationships from the man’s perspective.
Isn't that kind of what tv girl means, seems as though every song is a plot line of the episode of a sitcom from the dudes perspective dating a tv girl, just a bunch of stuff happening that gets embellished
According to Brad on a Twitter post from 2021: "Please do not call me a misogynist. I identify as a nihilistic misanthrope and i ask you please respect that." Kinda comical
Ya know. I don't think its a question of is it for boys or girls but rather are you getting the message behind it or not. I don't know a terribly lot about this band, so take this with a grain of salt but this whole thing reminds me of Fight club. That films message is interwoven with the story being a satire of hyper masculinity, yet a lot of people (in this particular instance: especially men) don't get the message and repeat the same toxic quotes as if they are devoid of any underlying message, ultimately making it the exact thing it was trying to condemn. If you like the lyrics for its misogynistic content you are ultimately missing the point. But id argue that both men and women are equally as capable of getting versus glossing over it.
Nahh I was tryna find out thru the comments if many lyrics are misogynistic or not and had the vid playing and just kept reading and reading, the vid took such a detour
i got so emotional recently listening to one of their songs because of how misogynistic it was because it made me realize my ex viewed me that way (esp since he's the one who introduced me to tv girl 💀) but honestly you can tell from the subtle and not so subtle bits in their songs that it really is just satirical and the singer is acutely aware of his own flaws and immaturity. in "song about me" there's literally a whole verse where the girl is calling him out on his shit and talking about how hypocritical he is, and in "birds don't sing" it is sooo obvious in my opinion that you're supposed to realize the singer is treating her horribly and not listening to her. i also think that women tend to be the subject of their music but not always the message. "cigarettes out the window" has a chain smoker as its subject, but the underlying theme is about the emptiness of life, and "the blonde" talks about a girl who is a natural blonde in the lyrics, but the song is actually a commentary on beauty in society. the lyrics definitely come off as whiny, "she left me so now i hate women," incel-y, male manipulator bangers, but i think the artists themselves are self aware and are portraying a flawed character.
I agree. Most of the time the lyrics come across as "She doesn't know what she wants, I know better, I break a lance for her yet she still fs up, she has double standards, she only wants to use men for pleasure but hurts herself while doing it because she is weak" which really... Isn't an accurate depiction of women at all and doesn't paint a nuanced light. If it were one kind of a song about one girl that would make sense, but they all are like this, which is why it doesn't come off as nuanced or realistic anymore. So maybe either the singer's dating/singing about a very strange kind of woman every damn time and dates them even though he knows they upset him or he/his character, the common perpetrator in all the scenarios, may partly be at fault, in contrast to what is sung about. It's highly likely that they're aware of that. I read in an interview the singer likes to vent about frustrations in his song he knows that are wrong to say to somebody irl. Thing is in my opinion if you have/have to vent these views of the opposite gender in the first place and don't have a nuanced view of relationships and why a man/a woman does what he/she does, then there might be some issues with your thinking you'd have to work through.
i just like the sounds, sounds and rhythm, and that's how i pick my music. Its good to appreciate art (music in this case) no matter the artist, and no matter the fan-base. Stray away from gatekeeping, and love music. also i love this video, keep it up NEOPUNKFM
I just wonder if y’all would keep this same energy if it was Neonazi lyrics or calling for genocide. I just find it interesting how everyone says they don’t care about lyrics but the only examples given are the ones that are hateful to women.
@@quietman208that's because basically no one ever comes across neo Nazi lyrics in songs. Most songs are about romance, however, so you do see a lot of gender politics at play. You listen to artists with problematic lyrics and/or behavior too, so don't get to eager to climb on a high horse and ride off into the sunset.
I like how its literally the complete opposite, MOST men (especially "alphas" and shit like that) are so starved for a woman's attention they'll literally change their own bodies to get it.
ive been a tv girl fan for over 3 years, the fandom is almost nonexistent, its just the people who say they like tv girl music use the relatability of the lyrics as a means to their greed, other than that, it has nothing to do with the band since this is mostly an audience issue, "male manipulators" lurk in other fandoms or audiences of similar artists as well, due to their resonance to the female audience, such as the smith and alex g which were mentioned in this video. other notable ones are deftones, the cure, radiohead and weezer. its the "losercore" that draws them in. much love to tv girl tho!
So the band's fanbase is smaller than most people think right?. I think this tells why TikTok doesn't translate well to the real fanbase. I guess it's similar to what happened to Steve Lacy (where most can't sing a whole song).
@@gx1tar1er I think it has to do with the broader trend of how music is being commodified these days because of streaming services and platforms like Tik Tok. Far more emphasis on the smallest, most easily digestable/marketable units of music whether that be singles (since everyone listens to playlists and not albums) or even just 10-15 second long soundbites (like the chorus of that Steve Lacey song you mentioned), both of which demand a lot less interaction with the artist, so its harder to gauge what it means to be a "fan" or have a "fandom". Tons of people have flocked to a select few of these bands like TV Girl or Deftones because they get packaged with another marketable image or identify (goth, alt, ____-core), but it often doesn't reflect a lasting interest or materialize into further engagement with the genres of these bands. That's my rant.
Never realized that TV Girl blew up. Got to see them years ago supporting Elvis Depressedly and it was one of my favorite gigs don't think I could see them now with the toxic fanbase lmao.
“Men don’t listen unless they’re gay” 😂 I felt so seen. I enjoy TV Girl not from the manipulator angle at all but from the acceptance and loss angle of some songs like Song About Me and Heaven is a Bedroom. I’ll agree it’s not the healthiest music and some songs are inappropriate but some songs are touching and catchy.
I dont use tik tok and I found it on apple music and it was an awesome album. I dont really get the manipulator aspect but its a solid album to feel emotions over a song.
As a simple 26-year-old girl who barely listened to Tv Girl because of "Not allowed", I'm going to say: "these kids lack street." But seriously, I know that the kids who appear in the video are still zoomers who have too much to live, but even I at that age would find it laughable to assume a person's personality through their musical tastes: it's like that old boomer myth that "you are automatically a genius only if you listen to Mozart after half an hour". In Latin America we have some artists like Romeo Santos and Ricardo Arjona who are known for their quite questionable lyrics due to their content that is considered misogynistic today, and although it would seem that it seems dedicated to "manipulative and misogynistic men" in general they are mainly listened to by ordinary ladies and housewives who only put it on in the background while they do their chores.
I dont think anyone you interviewed is very educated about what constitutes as misogyny and what constitutes as good faith arguments. It feels like nuance was thrown out the door but then again you interviewed literal teenagers off the street that get their music taste from tik tok. TV Girl's lyrics could be misogynistic whether ironically or genuinely, but these people taught me nothing about that.
@@vixenvxce1063it’s definitely not out of nothing, there is a problematic nature to the lyrics but this video tells us nothing abt it and the ppl saying it was a problem couldn’t really list an actual reason why
@@audreyharper1234 because there really is no reason. yes if you take the lyrics at face value it looks problematic but TV Girls whole shtick is creating songs with problematic lyrics with it all being satire. its like saying rap songs are problematic because of the lyrics that seem to promote the use of drugs, overdosing, alcoholism and murder because they take it at face value when its all just trying to tell a story.
@@audreyharper1234 Making songs with lyrics addressing heavy topics doesn't make them problematic. That's like saying it's "immoral" for Hozier to make a song about domestic violence, or that Future is "controversial" for making a song mentioning drugs. He sings songs about being in a mutually empty relationship with someone. I just relate to the shit that I relate to and then laugh at the sad and sarcastic misogyny our pathetic singer uses as a coping mechanism.
I think it is purposely misogynistic for a reason. Society is inherently misogynistic but no one usually looks at it or listens. It's kinda how "Hey Ya!" by Outkast in the way no one listens to the lyrics but they love the music.

I'm using charcters from shows and movies as examples but I'm also including a lot of TV Girl and Lana lyrics (diet mountain dew, death of a party girl, and every stupid actress), because I think that they showcase how beautiful, sad, lonely, and mistreated women/afabs are still seen as mysertious and intriguing. I used to be in a really bad place and when I discovered TV Girl, I became easier to feel bad (in a way that I still can't describe), but also, listening to TV Girl turned into a coping mechanism for me to just get through the day while going through traumatic events. as a very avid tv girl listener, tv girl kinda feels like a sarcastic take on misogynistic men's worldview. i've listened to tv girl for years and have loved their music through and through
edit 11/7/23:
ty for the likes! i want to offer a bit more of an explanation into my thinking, i keep checking back on this comment randomly and getting surprised im still practically the top comment
anyways, im autistic, sarcasm isnt usually something i understand well. HOWEVER, the misogynistic character of tv girl isnt exactly, just, sarcasm. the main 'character' throughout the songs is just that, a character, not just a sarcastic joke. this is a trope being portrayed through music that has people that fit the trope in real life. its like watching a movie almost but in song. other autistic people might understand where im going with the movie thing LOL but ya, its like recognizing all the patterns / tropes in a movie and knowing whats going to happen in it because of that. you can just kinda tell at some point that the tv girl character is a misogynist after listening to their music long enough. i dont really see how you can overlook it
edit 12/7/23:
checking back up on this comment again, agree with the first replier's edit :]
This is what I thought, his tone sounds so sarcastic I thought he was playing a character
Edit: I agree with the original commenter's edit lmao.
THIS!!!
I haven't listened to a single song by them, but if it's not ironic, isn't it similar to what Taylor Swift songs are?
I truly don’t understand people that fall in love with someone JUST based on music taste. I pray for them.

But id argue that both men and women are equally as capable of getting versus glossing over it.
exactly!!
i love fight club
THIS!! exactly that. I think people gloss over the perspective and how the lyrics are written to tell a story
so this video did not clear anything up i love it
i thought it was just me 💀💀
Nahh I was tryna find out thru the comments if many lyrics are misogynistic or not and had the vid playing and just kept reading and reading, the vid took such a detour
i got so emotional recently listening to one of their songs because of how misogynistic it was because it made me realize my ex viewed me that way (esp since he's the one who introduced me to tv girl 💀) but honestly you can tell from the subtle and not so subtle bits in their songs that it really is just satirical and the singer is acutely aware of his own flaws and immaturity. in "song about me" there's literally a whole verse where the girl is calling him out on his shit and talking about how hypocritical he is, and in "birds don't sing" it is sooo obvious in my opinion that you're supposed to realize the singer is treating her horribly and not listening to her. i also think that women tend to be the subject of their music but not always the message.
Yooo, my new song “outtamydreams!” finna blow up soon trust 🔥 ❤
You wrote this perfectly 😭 I agree with all of this
Yeesh what a chatterbox 🥱💀👹
Thing is in my opinion if you have/have to vent these views of the opposite gender in the first place and don't have a nuanced view of relationships and why a man/a woman does what he/she does, then there might be some issues with your thinking you'd have to work through.

most female attention is not attention but wanting attention from the man. Women ask and don't give.
This video somehow managed to say everything and nothing at the same time, impressive
Why?
ive been a tv girl fan for over 3 years, the fandom is almost nonexistent, its just the people who say they like tv girl music use the relatability of the lyrics as a means to their greed, other than that, it has nothing to do with the band since this is mostly an audience issue, "male manipulators" lurk in other fandoms or audiences of similar artists as well, due to their resonance to the female audience, such as the smith and alex g which were mentioned in this video. other notable ones are deftones, the cure, radiohead and weezer. its the "losercore" that draws them in. much love to tv girl tho!
So the band's fanbase is smaller than most people think right?. I think this tells why TikTok doesn't translate well to the real fanbase. I guess it's similar to what happened to Steve Lacy (where most can't sing a whole song).
@@gx1tar1eraint even much of a fanbase to begin with. I really love their music but cant talk about it or anything else

When she said that I died a bit inside
As a simple 26-year-old girl who barely listened to Tv Girl because of "Not allowed", I'm going to say: "these kids lack street."
But seriously, I know that the kids who appear in the video are still zoomers who have too much to live, but even I at that age would find it laughable to assume a person's personality through their musical tastes: it's like that old boomer myth that "you are automatically a genius only if you listen to Mozart after half an hour".
TV Girl's lyrics could be misogynistic whether ironically or genuinely, but these people taught me nothing about that.

not to be rude but the girl at 4:44, it's the double standards for me. so many female artists or bands literally sing 99% of their songs about breakups (yk like taylor swift) and that's okay but the second it's a guy it's not okay. also, as an avid tv girl listener, trans, and bi guy it's not misogynistic, i can sing most of the songs word for word line by line and most of it is actually about more than just a guy who wants to f*ck girls but can't. a lot of them can be interpreted differently or in a non-sexual way
some examples:
lovers rock - about how love can be fleeting but great in the moment
blue hair - can be about seeing change in yourself or others and not knowing how to feel
the blonde - this one is literally a song about how people feel the need to change themselves to be more likeable
loving machine - being afraid of losing people or being betrayed
safeword - literally about safe sex
it almost worked - honestly this could be about self improvement or suicide and failing at it
better in the dark - being self-conscious way

I thought a male manipulator was a manipulator... who is a man... You're telling me there's a whole aesthetic too ?
This felt like a post judge Judy Court interview
🤣
I feel like i just got brain damage
can we not enjoy music now without being accused of something
eh…
fr like idc i just wanna listen to whatever tf i want pls 😭😭
no. music is a satanic influence. lyrics are magic spells that will brainwash you. They should have banned it in the 80s like Tipper Gore planned.
i dont even listen to the lyrics it just slaps
a group of toxic relationships all linked to tv girl or another male manipulator band would be a good plot for a south park episode
2:13 bro is manipulating us in real time
Being a neopunkfm fan is like being a neopunkfm fan
I found out about so many different artists thanks to this channel. First Semetary, now i rly wanna give TV Girl a try

Listen to "one of these mornings" like holy shite it's great
I often forget how dumb and shallow young people are. I finally understand my dad's disappointment.
For real, they all talk in internet language just repeating the same stupid thing they just said because they're disingenuous people trying to act cool for a camera, you can tell whos a try hard on camera when they speak and who isn't, internet has truly rotted some of the young gens brains
lmao fr , especially the one girl. im guessing shes around my age and i do admit im a bit young and dumb my self, but she has such a shallow callous way of thinking
@@Fuhknelan"the one girl" bro there's like 10 ur gonna have to be more specific
@@potatoman7594 one with no chin thought itd be obvius since she seems to be the most shallow one
young people are always dumb. but a lot of these girls in the videos were like abused or groomed so it's not that hard to see why.
3:03 I love that reference so much honestly
I don’t even know if it’s figurative or not but I’m all for it
6:14 She does not know what guys really think
I don't blame her, if all you're confronted with is misogynistic garbage then it's easy to think that that's all there is. At the end of the day we are all limited by our own perspective and live in a world where the majority of people are incapable or unwilling to communicate their emotions properly. Add some internalized misogyny in there and you have a recipe for... whatever this video is lol.

Edit: lmao nvm I changed it to Cassandra

As a TV Girl fan of maybe 2 years (not from tiktok), I really enjoy seeing takes about TV Girl's lyrics and the band's possible misogyny, so thank you for this video. I'm currently doing reserach for a presentation about media that perpetuates the mindset of a toxic internal loop that women/afabs might have during a traumatic period in their lives. Nowadays, I'm just incredibly familiar with the music (not too sad anymore, yay!) and haven't really stopped listening. But anyways, I think that the ability of the people you interviewed to just tell you their experiences with male manipulators shows my point. Super interesting video! :)
you should have listened to 'Funkytown' by Lipps Inc, or other groovy music. Also you keep misspelling 'arab'.
@@heinoustentacles5719 actually they weren't trying to spell 'arab', they used the acronym 'afab', which stands for 'assigned female at birth' referring to someone who was born a female but may not identify as female.
as a trans male who listens to TV Girl, I am now officially scared of becoming a male manipulator
One of us, one of us
As a women anyone can be a misogynistic or manipulative just because you are man who listens to it dose not automatically makes you a male manipulator. Sometimes people like the music just because of the melody (me). People ignore that girls can also be manipulator and misogynistic. I think that the songs are from personal exspeirences or from made stories. Like reflecting on your own charecter, not bashing on women as a whole. Also gatekeeping music from guys saying that there are a male manipulator but when women who say this stuff enjoys T.v girls music, dosn't that also make you manipulator and misogynistic ???? It is not that deep smh
basically my point:
6:26
Yeah, Tiktok lobotomites lol. But when have women ever been misogynistic or manipulative?
I’m a female and never thought their music was misogynistic, there’s a story behind each of their songs. People’s lack of critical-thinking/comprehension never ceases to disappoint me
2:07 no way she just dissed all skaters
how can that girl in the beginning claim that an entire group is for women only? 💀
am i the only one who didnt find tv girl through tiktok? i found tv girl through shorts 💀
nah i found about tv girl through omegle 😭 i was asking for music recommendations in like 2014 and got recommended tv girl
Fr
i know for a fucking FACT that tv girl is manipulator music, because the only abusive partner i've had was a huge tv girl fan. although funny enough, it was a female manipulator rather than a male manipulator
So that one thing that happened to you applies to everybody else? Got it.
