Thought it would be smarter to make this camera full frame, so Nikon don't need to go head to head with fujifilm and their pretty awesome aps-c lenses lineup.
But there's a rub. If Nikon managed to produce a Full-frame mirrorless system for the retro form factor, it will be practically impossible to make the system compact. I'm of course speaking for myself here that I would not wish for a bulky setup, especially if my camera is a retro styled one. For instance, consider the Fujifilm 56mm f1.2, which is solely designed for the crop sensor size and see how its built relatively small compared to a Sony 85mm f1.8 Full frame lens. I feel that if size becomes obtrusive, it destroys the purpose of a walk around camera for which I reckon it is particularly intended for.

An Ff with IBIS and User settings (U1,U2, etc.) at a reasonable price (unlike the Df), OR offer it at an unreasonable price IF it was Made in Japan. It'd be the "perfect" retro camera and sell like hotcakes.
I was trolling some pentax ricoh pages and groups about a Pentax K1000 or a Spotmatic digital mirrorless...I hope it happens...we need a comeback for vintage design
Ordered mine straight away with the 28mm. So many people have asked for this including me, the FM2 is my favourite film camera. Looks like Nikon have done a great job.
Love that Nikon is trying something different. It worked for Fuji and makes a easier transition for newbies into the mount and also pros who shoot on the Z mount can have this as a personal/backup camera.
The aesthetic isn't what makes Fuji popular. It's the features per dollar. X-S10 has IBIS (this same-price NEW Nikon camera doesn't, neither does the more expensive Z50 and IBIS is a HUGE feature) and it has F-LOG internal video recording and can output 10-bit through HDMI. Z50 has none of these things and neither does this. X-T4 is the cheapest 4K60 camera at APS-C and up. And if you add the ability to shoot flat 10bit internally, the cheapest period, even if you include crummy micro four thirds cameras. And Fuji's weather sealing is the best out there. They don't even want to advertise the X-S10 as weather sealed even if it's better than the Z50 which Nikon brands as "entry level weather sealing". Nikon has just fallen from grace, I used to shoot exclusively Nikon APS-C but waiting for them to pull their heads out of their behinds and make something good in the mirrorless age is making my teeth itch.
@@Vinterloft that didn't use to be the case that long of a time. The AF used to be really not that good. So were popular because of the design as well as the film simulations. With the X-T4 and X-S10, they started to be best at APS-C.
@@petouser True, Sony reached the high end of the AF game faster than Fuji but Fuji fixed their rolling shutter first, and still has a massive lead in rolling shutter/ sensor read-out speed
@@Vinterloft micro four thirds isn't crummy wtf. The $1000 (when I bought it) G9 is a fantastic 10 bit video camera with great IBIS. The XT4 is incredible as well, but they each have their own advantages. Crummy is like Sony cameras that overheat during normal use. Or the R5 that has a barely usable 8K video capability. I say this as someone who owns the A7c, btw, so not hating on FF. M43 has its place like Fuji as a company does.
If Nikon adds a 10-20mm zoom for vlogging and few small primes of 28, 35, 50 equivalent focal lengths, I'm buying it for street photography and vlogging.
I too shoot a Df, as my daily driver when not shooting film. I would have already rep-ordered this if it were FF. Except it would probably be around three grand like the Df was.
This would of been a much more compelling camera and unique in its retro-styling sphere had it been FF rather than APS-C. As Fuji has gotten the latter covered admirably!
@They Caged Non I’m a Fuji user too (Canon as well) just saying Nikon could of had more of a unique selling point in the retro-styled camera market, if they’d gone FF. As much of the current retro competition is already APS-C or 4/3 anyway. And Nikon need a win! They’re on the brink of not being around anymore.
Thanks and congrats on them naming it for you. You deserve it. Just ordered mine (black and brown versions as I'll decide when I receive). I have the Z 6ii but I really love the lighter and smaller size for those trips I take where can't take all my gear or want to be more discreet walking around. AND I can use the Z full frame lenses I have if need be. I also agree with you that more like the silver DX 16-50mm lens would just make this a killer option - for newbies or oldies like me who like the old style.
Make a retro-looking 10.5 fisheye lens for it and that's all I'd need. Of course, with the adapter, I could use my current 10.5 lens. Better yet make a 16mm equivalent fixed lens version.
Really cool camera but launching with that full frame lens it’s like Nikon saying “don’t expect a good small prime lens line up like what you get on Fuji”.
@@TaipeiGeek I think they will make a handful as they did with G series DX glass but it would be wise to invest in FX Z glass anyways for obvious reasons.
Yeah, definitely crop lens lineup is not Nikon’s top priority right now, it’s more likely to come within a few years doe so. Right now, the priorities are getting the Z9 out to compete with Sony’s A1, getting the super teles out to compete with Canon’s RF stuff, and apparently putting out this Zfc to get a piece of the retro styling pie and compete with Fuji and Olympus. They’re also effectively refreshing interest in the 16-50 and 50-250 lenses and probably sold off a lot of Z50 stock with a slew of recent sales. I don’t know how you feel about it, but I’m sold. It’s not exactly groundbreaking, but it has tactile appeal and Nikon image quality and lens compatibility. For that matter, it also has pretty darn good Canon EF and Sony E lens compatibility, and it’s an argument for adapter companies to invest in making a Fuji X-Nikon Z adapter, which would be terrific. Nikon is obviously going to continue supporting their DX format, and if this sells well a Fuji X adapter would probably be popular as well.
Have you googled: X100 leaf shutter flash? Those are some compelling reasons to have a non-interchangeable lens camera (not necessarily an X100 but it helps, especially now that Sony no longer puts flash hot shoes on their 1 inch compacts). A portable TT350 flash is plenty bright, even in daylight, when coupled with a leaf shutter - with an ILC you'll find yourself lugging at least an AD200. I've had great fun traveling with an X100T and a pocket flash, right now downsized to an X30 for the same purposes while I'm waiting for covid pricing to end to buy a used X100V - maybe yours if you never use flash. :)
I just got an X100v in April, and sold my Coolpix A. Honestly, if I was going to to a Z mount camera, i would want the bigger body and full frame sensor. Word on the street is that the X100V is selling used for list price or above due to supply issues... so sell it now if you want out.
Entirely possible and easy for Nikon to do they already have the tooling in place for the Zfc they only need to modify the mainboard and sensor for FF. If they add IBIS I would be willing to pay a bit more perhaps 1200-1300 USD.

By the way, I think Nikon was brilliant coming out with the APS-C camera - many comments below that they should have gone straight to FF. 1. Many young people moving up from iPhones and the $999 price point makes a huge difference (can't get FF with these options for that), 2. 99% of people buying FF or crop are not going to make money using them nor are they going to print anything larger or need full screen resolution so APS-C is more than adequate, and 3. This camera with the 16-50mm lens is 1lb. 3 oz. That offers so much flexibility for all ages and interests. If more people take the camera with them and are taking photos, then that is the whole purpose. If this sells as well as I think it will, a FF will be out by Christmas I bet so those with large printers will be happy.
The Df didn't fail because it lacked video. It was a much more expensive camera that appealed to an older audience. The Z fc's much lower price will appeal to those who want to get their first camera and like the retro aesthetics.
How refreshing! Nikon is giving a good jump into the camera world with “old school” classic style! Thank you, Nikon! Ps: This camera reminds me a little bit of Under Fire/1983 with Nick Nolte.:)
Yeah I‘m disappointed. It looks good and all but Aesthetics aside there is nothing that draws me to it. I feel like Fuji makes Cameras for oldschool photographers while this is for „hipsters“ I guess. More like genZ but this is already a mouth full I just woke up.
Well done Chris! Very informative! I just can’t get used to EVF. I still love my D800,D300 & D300s plus, I just got an F4s because of your Cameras of yesteryear video. It got me reminiscing about the one I had from 1989 - 2001. It got stolen in the media room at the Mtl. Jazz Fest. I looked into it & got one delivered from Japan for $150 + $25 duty. Amazingly it was brand new & never had batteries or film in it! I fell in love all over again! Thanks!!!

Thanks for the video guys.
Im a Nikon fanatic. I own the majority of the Z line up. I have been wanting to get a fujifilm x100v to use for street photography and as my edc to photograph pretty much everyday life. I have been set on it but ughh this Nikon makes me change my mind… I’m still undecided on which to get.
My thought as well. I would have been very interested in this if it had been full frame. I could have adapted my film era Nikkors and kept their field of view and they could have made a retro styled adapter to match the vintage lenses to keep the vintage aesthetic.
Very interesting camera. And reasonably priced. The only competition is the Fuji XT30. But I prefer the look of this. I’m a big fan of classic SLRs and this is the best looking mirrorless camera I have seen. It’s a shame there isn’t a small grip. I imagine they will improve things with later models
Yeah, but they did mention it from the point of view of lenses for an APS-C sensor vs the aesthetic (though I still think FC stands for "Fuji Camera" and not "For Chris".
Were this an FF sensor.. I'd definitely buy it. A FF Z fc model for 2k€ and I'd ditch my Sony A 7III..and stick to it and the rest of my Nikon setup. Thanks dor the video, guys ;)
Then they kept mentioning it and even put it next to one as a comparison. It's very obvious who Nikon is going after with this camera, no need to hold back on that.

As an old Nikon guy who experienced the magic of nikon f cameras and owner of a xt4 and xs10 along a bunch of fantastic lenses I was almost sold on the nikon Z fc ... untill I saw the price to understand one more time that Fuji is definitely the king of apsc world. I am sorry for Nikon but for that price you can buy an xs10 which by comparison is a far superior camera... However seeing Nikon giving a try on its retro style gives hope for the future. Thank you guys for another great content. you are addictive :)
The 16-50 is actually quite a sharp lens for what it is, I found. Of course it's probably not as sharp as your FF S-lenses, but for a DX lens to be used on an entry-level DX Z body, it's not bad by any means. It's quite sharp throughout the zoom range. Bokeh may be a different story, although still mostly pleasing to look at, but probably not the same as the FF fast primes. But it's a compact 24-75mm equivalent lens that's good for vlogging and general usage. I think the ideal travel kit might be their new 12-28 and 18-140 DX lenses that were just released a few weeks ag o (maybe even get the 16-50 for light duty). I don't know if I 'd agree that Fuji felt video was that important -- up until maybe a few years ago with the X-H series and now that the X-T series has full 4k capabilities. I remember with my X-T2 I could only do about 10 minutes of 4k30 video, so it seemed at that time (which was around 2017) video wasn't really a priority for Fuji, and I still think that's somewhat true today. They put it in most of their cameras, but they aren't as equipped as their FF counterparts from Nikon, Sony and Canon, which now offer things like 4k60 and both mic and headphone in on their more expensive models. Even Fuji's more recent X-T3 and XT4 models I feel still lag behind the competition in video, so I feel that for Fuji, #1 priority is still stills and vintage look, video is #2, whereas with CAnon, Sony and Nikon, video and stills is both #1 with aesthetics being #2.
@@Joelsfilmer I think this body is a z mount though. And in retrospect If nikon did release crop mirrorless lenses... they would be expensive either way

Great preview guys, love Chris not wanting to share his toys haha. Gorgeous design. Hoping the MKII version will offer ibis making this a complete system. Personally I'd love it if they would make a rangefinder style like the SP, complete with a silver nosed 50 1.4!
It depends on what you want in a camera. For photography this is everything you need minus the IBIS. Keep in mind, this is the first itteration and just like fuji things weren't always perfect with their first X cameras... I know because I am heavily invested in the Fujifilm X system since 2012 coming from Nikon F and DSLRs. This camera is a long time coming.
@ Same was said about Fuji, and look how successful their cameras are now. Nikon has been making optics and cameras for a century now, I think they know what they're doing. Honestly I am sad that I will leave Fujifilm but I started with Nikon just over forty years ago and their cameras Never let me down outside my own negligence. I have yet to make a bad buying decision and I have LOTS of cameras of different kinds, I have a good feeling about this one and what is the future of it. I did not have that feeling with the Df and I'm glad I didn't buy that one looking back now. I am at the age where I only just want one ecosystem and the Z mount both DX and FX are compatible with all my F mount lenses [to a point] which means I no longer care to have separate bags for each camera system.
I was very close to purchasing a Fuji x100 series as a street camera to add to my Nikon full frame family. Now I'm in the wait and see mode....good timing Nikon.
Maybe a FF sensor would have made more sense, so you can use the old 35mm lenses without a crop. In Apsc Fuji rules, but a classy looking FF would be really interesting. Also a dedicated adapter would be nice, designed for AI-AIS lenses.
This will probably sell very very well regardless of being a crop sensor and nikon might work some of their magic and release a full frame version in a couple years.
This is enthusiast level camera to carry around always and take amazing photos. No need for FF. Some of my best photos are on the D90 I used for nearly 9 years.
I love Nikon dearly, but you're absolutely right, Chris; they need to follow it up with proper looking and functioning DX specific lenses. They walked into the ring to compete with Fuji, and now they need to go five rounds and make some competitive lenses.
All camera's should have physical dials for shutter speed and aperture. Especially aperture. If you aren't going to give us manual aperture lenses give us a dial
I thought the control ring could be remapped to aperture, but I could be wrong. Notice they call it a control ring, not focus ring. I believe it can also be ISO or EC.
@@RiposteThis I don't know, I would never update to a newer camera that's so thoroughly beaten by a direct competitor at basically the same price just because I had a handful of lenses. They have the fastest processor which is owed for their lack of rolling shutter something Sony, Nikon and Canon STILL struggle with, all their cameras have F-LOG video internally and all can record 10-bit at the very least over HDMI, they were the first to develop a small and strong enough IBIS system for a camera as small as the X-S10, and the X-T4's IBIS is the most potent IBIS mechanism of any professional camera, only matched by the prosumer Panasonic MFT cameras. The X-T4 offers 4K60 up to 400mbps which no other APS-C or better camera does anywhere near its price point. Fujifilm has the best weather sealing of all camera manufacturers, so much so that they're not even advertising the X-S10 as weather sealed despite being more weather resistant than the Z50 which Nikon says is "entry level weather sealed".

Well, I would say that it is more comparable to the X-T30 (weight, size, one card slot and - I think - no WR), the X-T3 is clearly better. And at first glance, the X-T30 still wins (better burst and video capabilities, with a bigger sensor and a better suited lense selection) whilst being a bit cheaper... But maybe the Nikon will have better autofocus with a good IQ and/or better ISO perf and/or DR that will allow it to compete?
@@showdaKOs and that kit lens for the Fuji is awesome. 18-55mm f2.8-4. Down under in Aus I can pickup the X-T30 with the 18-55 for AU$1350.00 or the Nikon Z fc with 16-50 for AU$1799.00. Pretty easy choice.

Yes, I love the aperture ring on my Fuji X100V. But it has a fixed lens. The problem is that Z-mount lenses don't have aperture rings. I was trolling some pentax ricoh pages and groups about a Pentax K1000 or a Spotmatic digital mirrorless...I hope it happens...we need a comeback for vintage design
virtually everything extra he said he wanted, fuji has
It wouldn't be a contest. Fuji has a complete lens system and multiple retro-style bodies in different form factors and price points.
fuji beats this camera by a lot. even the X-T2 is better than that camera
You can tell Chris wants this camera, he even put the strap on it.
Ha! Nikon provided it with strap attached. But your point still stands because I didn't proceed to cut it off with scissors.
Thanks Chris. Doing a preview with an injured foot in the middle of a record breaking heat wave and doing it well.
Been waiting for this from Nikon for 15 years, looks great, but I will stick with my excellent Fujifilm X-H1 for now.
If Nikon adds a 10-20mm zoom for vlogging and few small primes of 28, 35, 50 equivalent focal lengths, I'm buying it for street photography and vlogging.
As an active Nikon Df user, I would buy it if it was full-frame. For APS-C, I’d stick with the Fuji system. More native lenses at present.

Lack of Ibis is the glaring problem. Aperture rings on the lenses would be nice too. But the styling looks great.
Make a retro-looking 10.5 fisheye lens for it and that's all I'd need. Of course, with the adapter, I could use my current 10.5 lens. Better yet make a 16mm equivalent fixed lens version.
You wrote a bunch , then changed your mibd🤷
Really cool camera but launching with that full frame lens it’s like Nikon saying “don’t expect a good small prime lens line up like what you get on Fuji”.
Of course they won't, because Full frame lenses are superior, and Nikon's core business is full frame, not crop like with Fuji.
@@shlawchablaas you make a good point. Maybe I should hold off on getting rid of my XF glass and just sell the X bodies I have.

I used an FM2 as a work camera for years. Sooo tempting to buy this!!
As a (primarily) Nikon shooter, I am looking very hard at my X100v at the moment…
I want Zf with Full-Frame Sensor for the same price as Z5.
That's not possible
I'm with you Firuz, everything is possible.
what else ya need ?😋😝
Entirely possible and easy for Nikon to do they already have the tooling in place for the Zfc they only need to modify the mainboard and sensor for FF. If they add IBIS I would be willing to pay a bit more perhaps 1200-1300 USD.
Reminds me of my Nikon Fm3a. Which I still use. Film rules!

Nikon take my money!!

@@Eikenhorst i didn't mean the secondary screen function of the X-pro 3 but rather the way the main screen only tilts upto 90deg facing up
Buying it. I’ve been waiting for a crop sensor Z with great autofocus and flip out screen. The styling is awesome too- Beautiful like my FM2n which I still shoot regularly.
Throw a noct on this thing and you’ll have the perfect street photography camera 😆
Great video as always guys. Can't wait for the review. 👍
Cool, it’s almost as nice as my Fuji 😂
I kinda feel that a big part of the value of fully articulating screens is that it's easy to keep the screen safe when you're not using the camera. My older 5D camera had many scratches on the screen
Same here. Should have been that way from the very beginning. Scratched up smeared screens make a great camera look like a worn out cheap phone camera.
Until they bring back the film rewind crank and make it so that the photos on the card are wrecked if you open the card door before you have fully rewound the crank, I will remain unconvinced.
LOL...You must be as old as me...
@@scottslotterbeck3796 I do remember those days. In a hurry to load film quickly when shooting an event and some exciting action is about to happen, and you pop the door open before rewinding? Wrecks your mood in a hurry.
@@smithcon I only did that a couple of times; thinking I'd rewound the entire roll only to realize...whoops!
One nice thing about film (besides the best color still not equaled), you chose your shots more carefully. I shot primarily landscapes. I spent a lot of time getting just the right exposure (maybe bracketing), composition, lighting, and the like. It was, frankly, more rewarding.
By the way, for your viewers in the U.S., Nikon USA customer service says that you can get the full range of colors if you pre-order your camera from their site. The authorized dealers can only sell the black body. Some sites said they are only available in Japan, but Nikon USA makes them available here.
I'm worrying about Nikon at this moment. They could revive their rangefinder S-series cameras, full frame etc., with a much less price than Leica. But this feels like latecomer copycat of Fuji.
I love it. Having the dials on top is what I've been waiting for.
Doh, Fuji has been doing that for years
@@jimmason8502 I have 7 Nikon DX primes and zooms.
Big mistake: A camera like this with a lens without aperture stops looks very ridiculous. With aperture stops, there is no need for the little LCD screen.
Yes, I love the aperture ring on my Fuji X100V. But it has a fixed lens. The problem is that Z-mount lenses don't have aperture rings. I guess Nikon could make special lenses for the Zfc, but that would limit the number of Z lenses it could use, thus removing one of its competitive advantages against the Fuji X100 series. As for me, I'll be using both!
I'm a Sony user, so really don't need this camera like at all, but at the same time that orange one looks so DAMM good! I don't need it, but I want it
Why would you get this instead of a Fuji? They could have at least made it ff...
Chance was blown away, Nikon should've made this FF
Lovely camera but YIKES aps-c :/
I really love it but I demand full frame! I hope it comes and that they also make the same kind retro design version of the upcoming 40/2 lens.
