    As someone who edits all their own videos on both a budget and (now Im definitely not on a budget) I can say you can literally get away with a super cheap or even integrated GPU.
    Even a cheap 4gb GPU is WAYYYYY more than enough.
    CPU on the other hand you can get away with an i5 6 core for most things. If you're doing just cut and stitch and a little txt and a little graphic overlay on sub 15 mins videos then you're good. If you think you'll be doing some involved projects with many layers then maybe look into I7 or Ryzen 5+
    Idk why he says get a 400-500 dollar GPU. I literally grew to over 100k subs on a 500 ENTIRE COMPUTER with hickups only on my very involved videos.

    For people not used to building their own systems, keep in mind that you can't just buy a new 6 or 8-core CPU and slap it in your existing machine...you need to also buy a motherboard that supports it...and that also affects what kind of RAM you can use. Also, any time you buy a new motherboard, you usually have to buy a new Windows license. So, changing CPUs can be a major investment beyond just the cost of the CPU.

    very nice and clear speaking. I mean also the way, pronounciation is perfect. much appreciated. do you think it is worth the money to spend on 1070 over 1060? And the STRIX over the DUAL setup? It seems there is just minor difference between strix and dual but the first one has higher consumption and is much hotter..the purpose would be 4k editing and scaling to FHD. I am interested in your thoughts. thanks in advance.

Will adding like a gtx 1050ti improve it significantly? Thanks!

    This was helpful. Currently trying to decide between two 15" 2015 Macbook Pro's.
    One of them has the 2.8GHz processor with the stock graphic card. 355 battery cycles. $1560.
    The other is the 2.5 GHz and and an AMD Radeon R9. 37 battery cycles. $1950
    I really only do video and audio editing with Premiere and Audition, not much After Effects. On top of that, you said to spend more money on the processing and I have a chance to get better processing for less money. I think I'll go with the 2.8GHz :) Thanks!

    Thanks for explanations! :)
    So, I was wrong by focusing 100% on GPU (ignoring CPU entirely), I can get better rendering performance. But, yeah, as you said in the video, CPU takes bigger role in video rendering.
    That makes sense as I recently got stressed when rendering around 3 minutes of video, I still have to wait around 15-20 minutes to finish. Turns out, after upgrading to GTX1050, now I realized, GPU only helps on playback, not the entire encoding.

  • @JeremyWilliamson

    GOOD explanation... my 4gb of VRAM for GPU 3D rendering in After Effects with the CUDA drivers is RIDICULOUSLY fast. If i used my CPU for 3D-ray tracing, even though i have 4.0ghz per core... it's SLOW without that GPU help. Now for just editing and such... the cores pay off as well.
    It's all basically just like EATING properly. It's not good to have just carbs, protein, essential fats, or water, you want a good balance of every category.... same with Graphics Card, Processors, RAM, HDD speed. I dig how you explain it too! *****
    The BEAUTY of Adobe now is Creative Cloud being able to work on the SAME project in mac and/or windows! Things are amazing these days!

      so gpu helps in video renderring more than cpu?

    • @JeremyWilliamson
      @JeremyWilliamson 8 років тому

      ProAppleTech It does for 3D ray tracing rendering in After Effects... it does some for rendering in Premiere Pro, also! the Mercury something or another.. cant remember what it's called haha BUT... it makes 3D rendering like making a bowl of cereal! for real! haha If you have a descent Graphics card though.

    • @MuhabHasan
      @MuhabHasan 8 років тому +1

      Jeremy Williamson sorry, but imma bit confused. do you need CPU for video editing or 3d renderring or both or u need cpu for one of them or both or is there some that need that and others need this

    • @JeremyWilliamson
      @JeremyWilliamson 8 років тому

      ProAppleTech I actually use BOTH... but GPU (4gb VRAM) for 3D rendering, and CPU (4.0 - 4.4 ghz) for non-3D rendering.
      GPU video rendering isnt really a common thing, though many do it because Nvidia has the CUDA plug-in driver for AMD graphic cards in the newer iMacs.
      So, instead of my 4gb of VRAM going to waste, only being used for screen's, pixels and stuff... I can use that RAM to help render 3D graphics in After Elements using Element 3D and things like that to be SOOOOO MUCH FASTER! Make sense?
      My iMac is a 27" 5k screen.. so I set it around 2560x1440 (mid-setting), use hdmi for another HD monitor for editing, and then use just VGA connectors for extra monitors only being used for extra space to have my Finder App open for accessing any files that I need, and whatever else... web-browsing, emailing, etc.

    • @MuhabHasan
      @MuhabHasan 8 років тому +2

      everyone is saying the opposite coz i've heard that 3d rendering needs cpu and video rendering needs GPU (sometimes cpu) is that right or CPU for video editing (sometimes gpu) and 3d rendering always gpu?

    Nice one mate .. you sound like an Ace! The think that you confirmed for me is that a 1070 is good for video editing .. I used to wonder if the gaming cards do not do well in v.editing as they are more geared to churning out fps? I guess the more cuda cores the better for v.edits as well .. but to what extent the GPUs get used compared to the CPUs seems to be a mixed bag? Cheers.

    Great video. Quick question. I'm considering getting an imac desk top with 4k retina and with a quad core i7 processor. My debate is to stay at 8 gb of ram or upgrade to 16 gb of ram. My main purpose is to edit music videos (my own basically) and promotional documentaries for myself as i'm a singer songwriter. The only multi tasking I would do while editing video is maybe looking at the video footage in a separate player like quick time to double check the footage. So with this knowledge, what is your recommendation for my use of this. 8 gigs or 16 gigs of ram?

    I have the top of the line surface pro (it's battery is horrible when doing anything too video intensive) and now looking to build a new computer. Preferably I'll do what I did with my last computer build, best cpu and a basic gpu, then upgrade the gpu, upgrade the ram, but probably start with the fasted and best SSD so I'm not having to change OS in an upgrade. I figure buying elements bit by bit will work better than buying everything in a lump sum and saving bit by bit instead. That way I can use a machine sooner, and just upgrade it over time.
    Do you think that's a sound strategy?
    I'll be using it for video editing, recording of game play, and also visual and graphic art, maybe a bit of 3d animation too down the track.

    Hey Roberto, the CPU I use is an Intel Core i5 4670 processor with 3.4 GHz and 4 cores. I use this processor for video editing. My motherboard is capable of going to an i7 but I chose i5. Do you think my CPU is too slow for video editing?

    Very helpful video!
    I want to buy a 2nd hand HP EliteBook 8570w with i7 3rd gen. processor and mainly use it for video editing. 4k editing as well if possible, using proxy.
    Specs are:
    i7-3720qm - 2.6 GHz - 4 cores 8 threads - 6 MB cache
    8 GB RAM (upgradable to 32 GB)
    NVIDIA Quadro K2000M (2 GB GDDR3)
    320 GB HDD (7200 RPM) (maybe I'll add in an SSD later to that as well)
    Do you think this is good enough or am I better of buying a new laptop with twice the price?
    Yes, I want a laptop as I travel a lot.
    Thank you :)

    Thanks for all your great videos ;D

      I'm currently moving most of my business stuff over to Bluehost and Recommend them. Right now they have a sale going on!
      If you can't afford the upfront prepay cost then I recommend Hostgator and I'm currently building a Microsite there for web design tutorials.
      Wix is a good starter solution if you don't know how to code and I'm working on something with them especially since for a lot of UA-camrs it would help them because they need a free or affordable website.
      Namecheap is where I'm going to be hosting a few Niche websites I'm developing that will provide free content on specific topics and also help promote some of my videos and some product launches I have planned over the next 24 months.
      If you decided to go with any of these I'd appreciate you using my affiliate links:

    I'm new to video editing and building my first rig and also starting a UA-cam channel . Would a i7 7600 and 1060 be ideal for premiere and photoshop. I can't find that much info on the 1060. Mostly everyone is recommending the 1070. Is rendering really that much slower on the 1060?

    Hey Roberto,
    I've been checking out a few of your videos again. Great content as ever.
    I recently purchased myself a late 2015 27" 5k iMac as an upgrade from my late 2013 Macbook pro. 13". I got the core i5 with 1TB fusion drive and ATI graphics.
    I had originally planned to wait until after the MBP was no longer usable to finance a new Mac, However, with the way apple is going with their thin and non upgradable direction. I decided to do it now so I could get an iMac I could still upgrade Ram later on in.
    I've also considered building my own PC, but being invested in Apple's software, felt that would turn out to be a bigger investment then a new Mac, as I would have to buy new software as well as hardware. Since I no longer need a Laptop I could probably sell this one to help pay off the new mac quicker. I've gone to an iPad for my portable device, it's more comfortable then a laptop for me. FYI, the iMac has a SkyLake CPU with 4 cores. I plan on investigating 4k content more and more as it comes out. I've already got a 4k TV which has been great. Great content as always! -- Clint

    What u need help in is finding a computer for me to be able to edit without any hiccups like choppy playback. I currently have a 2012 MacBook pro with 16gb of ram. Not sure what core but I can't play back smooth video even in 1/4 quality and it just gives me a headache. I was looking into a surface pro 4 i7 16gb ram but I'm afraid of it doing the same since its not a full fledged computer. So I'm also looking into the iMac i7 and upgrade to 32gb ram but if I can save some money then please help me. Would be great. Thanks!

    So I am planning to build a good PC for editing, designing and possibly gaming.
    Will an AMD FX8350 (CPU) and a GTX 970 STRIX DCU II OC (GPU) be good for my PC build? I want my PC under £500($739).
    I just cant find I good budget CPU at around £150 for rendering and designing.

    Great video and explanation. NVIDIA is selling their founder's edition cards at really good prices. This post is pre-Ampere - their 2080S is $700 USD, 2070S $500 and 2060S is $400. Also 32GB of RAM is cheap now, under $200 for 3200 MHz DDR4. CPUs are well priced too - the Ryzen 7 or 9 series (pre TX CPUs). Your video did a great job explaining why the CPU and GPU are important for editing. Adobe's been utilizing a lot of GPU VRAM in their programs now.

    Brilliant! This really helped reassure my assumptions on hardware performance specifically for video editing. Handbrake takes so long to convert my game clips to a constant frame rate and because I want them to be good quality I set my encoding to Slow (under optimise video h.264). So I thought well maybe applying advanced settings to use the gpu (gpu=1) would help speed up the process. It seems that this still primarily uses my cpu. i5-4570 and gtx980.

    Some CGI rendering software like Redshift only use the GPU and can use up to 8, 8 separate GPUs per PC/License and needs twice as much system RAM as VRAM. Also, while not required it is recommended to have at least two threads per GPU for maximum performance. Other software such as Blender Cycles can use both CPUs and GPUs but it is immensely faster on the latter under "most" scenarios. Depending on what software you are using it really depends on whether or not you should be spending more on your CPU or your GPU.

    Hey there! So basically I am thinking of jumping on board with building my first PC in years. The Core i3 7350k is right in my price range. Currently I am running Premier and After Effects on my 2012 Macbook Pro IVY BRIDGE Quad Core. And its struggling especially in AE / Rendering in Premier. Running some benchmarks shows that the 7350k will outrun my 5 year old quad core mobile processor. I will be doing light gaming but really be doing anywhere from 1080p - 4k video editing along with a some light animation with AE. So anywhere from content creation to short films. I guess my question is, with a GTX 1050ti SSDs etc. should I be ok for awhile? Thanks!

    Are you saying you saw 50% gains because adding the GTX 1070 allowed the CPU to focus on rendering? For instance, the GTX 1070 absorbed the OS tasks that the CPU would normally be handling?

    Help me out on this matter for a moment. I used powerdirector 13 for all my video editing needs. My system has an i5 cpu with 16 gb of memory and an ssd, etc. Recently I upgraded from a radeon gpu with 1gb of ddr5 memory to a gpu at 256 bit, 4 gb of ddr5 ram and many, many more stream processors. But this upgrade did virtually nothing in terms of providing smoother editing on my timeline or in terms of rendering. I'm not sure why, as the upgrade was quite significant. Perhaps powerdirector does not utilize the gpu in a significant manner (?).

    Agreed! I'm using HP Z620 Workstation with 16GB RAM, 3.4Ghz Xeon processor. I don't edit 4K more often but full HD editing very smooth in Adobe Premiere Pro CC. I also completely agree with you this CPU & GPU thing. Actually this machine belongs to the company which I currently work for. I'm planning to buy 2015, 13-inch MacBook Pro For my other freelancing jobs. I'm not doing heavy VFX and 3D projects. I assume for my workload and for my budget this Mac would be suitable.
