I love the format and arrangement to an American jazz big-band style. It fits the aesthetic of the game perfectly, and it makes a huge jump from the (severely limiting) chip-tune to fully-fleshed music.
Since I want to become a VGM composer, I've been considering moving to Japan since.. well, they appreciate this kind of music more than West does in general.

I don't think its so much the audience, but the huge number of homages that Mother has. Seeing that the frankie boss fight music is an homage to Chuck Berry's Johnny be good, not to mention the Tonzura Brothers being based on the blues brothers, and knowing how unappreciative some artists are in this country (not to mention how stingy copyright laws are in the US). In japan you can get away with it by just saying your game is not based on anyone or anything, but here it's another story. =/
I absolutely LOVE mother music - but i have to say this is pretty poor in my opinion. Not to say people can't like it :P It's just not for me. It sounds too clumsy - and almost sleazy. Looses the innocence of the original games.
But they're very racist in terms of jobs. You won't find one over there. I've heard so many say they'll "Go to Japan" to get into the gaming industry, and it never works out. Just a heads up buddy.

I've always thought of the Mother games as only making sense using sprite art as the graphics, but claymation would actually suit them rather well.
