EPIC: The Musical Troy Saga -Complete Stage Animatic

- This is the pose-by-pose animatic for the ENTIRE TROY SAGA
This project has caused Blender to crash more times than I can count, and I definitely cannot do all four songs of the next saga all in one file again, but it was SO WORTH IT.
All possible credit to @JayHerrans and his Epic ensemble, who wrote and performed the music.
I imagine the audience applauding for Athena when the curtain comes down like George Washington in Hamilton
That would be awesome
Hamilton is the best thing ever
I like EPIC
That'd be so cool. Also makes me think of the fact that in the Percy Jackson universe, George Washington was canonically a son of Athena.
YESS
I like how the gods appear in silhouette first.
I’m glad you like that, it’s one of my favorite parts too
how did i mistake silhouette for styrofoam.
@ * shrugs *
Jorge actually said that, if he was ever going to do a live performance, it was going to be inside a circus like setting, because it would allow him more freedom whith what the characters can do
Check out my Storm animatic, if you want to see something in an arena-like setting
Arena setting productions are pretty fun, much more dynamic and gives the actors more space to move. On a stage things are a bit more static.
I’d love to do all of EPIC in an area style theatre but tbh I found it to be a bit more than I could manage at this stage of my animation career
This type of stage would be called “in the round”. And it typically is a lot more static and less prop/scene changes because there’s likely little to no backstage. So honestly the classic stage (as this video shows) is much easier for a full scale production like epic which has lots of background and setting changes. Not to say it can’t be done in the round, it would just be widely more actor focused and have less stage design
Greek amphitheater would work too
If this actually gets made into a production, I will pay good money to see it live!
I plan to attend as many showings as I can
I will indeed give all my savings to see this live ❤
This makes hamilton money. Take it to broadway.
There some people made it in Russia
@waersit they are not supposed to do that, legally. That’s not an okay thing
I like how the staging was done. Now we need some dance company to think of artistic styled dancing and stuff :OOO
yes please!
I been thinking of choreography for the ensemble lol you'd need trained dancers for what I wanna do but it's possible! Like Hamilton
OMG how cool would it be if the entire production of the live musical was done by the fans! (AKA the Winions:)@ArianaAshham
I WAS NOT expecting the "you can relax my friend" at the end. That has me almost in tears this was so incredible 😢
Surprise! Thanks for watching it through to the end 😁
@@MydnyteRaven Of course I watched it to the end I'm obsessed with Epic and this was so fun to watch
That song is heart wrenching. (Open Arms) Steven Dookie, the voice actor for Polites, did his job very well. It pairs nicely with the marimba, and is my favorite song in the entire musical so far.
@@jid381 He really did do an amazing job, and its all the more heartbreaking because of what comes later.
I added that bit at the end, to try and emphasize the anxiety that I felt at the end of Open Arms, even when I didn't know what I know now.
0:18 Now they’ll be the ones who *_slayyyyy_* 💅 💅
Oh, hi Percy
@ Hi
Hey Percy
So happy im not the only one who thinks this
@@Son-Of-Poseidon1808PERCY 😡 NO MORE ELECTROCUTING CABIN 1
That last "you can relax, my friend" was so brilliant! Showing Athena's power of Quick Thought and what it does, but also bringing forth the two ideologies that Odysseus is presented with. I love this so much!
Thank you!
I wanted the audience to feel some of the anxiety I felt when I first heard the song. The 4th song in a musical about a Greek myth and it’s telling me to relax? Not very relaxing
This has come a looooong way since watching little cubes shuffling around the stage!
Thank you for your kind words!
But you gotta admit the cubes were pretty funny
Fading to black instead of dropping a fake baby off stage is such a great decision, I feel like the 2nd one could be unintentionally funny if done poorly. Overall this is just so cool conceptually, I’m so glad you’re making these videos! Just imagining some of these scenes on a stage gives me chills
I think a combination would be really effective. Choreograph it in a way where ody is raised on a ledge (like the walls In the beginning of the video) with his back to the audience and visibly raising the baby and then cut entirely to black (or red!) as he lets go. Really I think the only risk of accidental comedy would be if you could like hear the baby clunk so idk just like make someone backstage catch it
@vita_stinky I do have a plan for a redo
No what I thing is that the wall should come back up and off climbs up it while singing “but when does a comet become a meteor, when does a candle become ablaze” (maybe there are stairs) and then while singing “forgive me” he holds a white cloth that looks like it might have a baby it it but no baby or fake baby can even be seen and after “I’m just a man“ it fades to *red* (and then black so we don’t have to see it not actually happen) because I think the lights should turn red every single time someone dies. Then there’s some transition music to give us enough time to get into “full speed ahead”
@@drpigglesnuudelworte5209 you don't like the baby cube? /t
@@MydnyteRaven 😭😭im just thinking about potential ways to have the baby dropped off the tower and some ways to bring in color metaphors so there doesn’t have to be blood on stage
Ok but the transition between just a man and full speed ahead was genius
Loving this, as my mind is already moving through my own minor adjustments like having Ody walk to the back with the baby and let it go over the back wall or hving Zeus circle him. these set designs and plans are great!
So many minor adjustments to make, for sure. I've learned so much since I made this, about both staging and the myth
Here me out idk how possible this is for most theaters but having a circle stage that can spin would be so great for scenes like him giving orders, or when Zeus appears, or Circe circling him
i was thinking a plate in the centre of the stage that rotates would be a good addition (think of how it’s used in hamilton, very versatile)
Or when Polites, Ody’s mom, and Eurylochus sing in love in paradise!
I think a silhouette of people holding baby Telemachus would be awesome to have in that background somewhere
5:19 I just love this scene, you can feel the emotions with the movements. When he holds the knife above the crib and just always stops just to try again, I just love it LOVE IT, combined with the amazing music to it it's just *chef's kiss*
Thank you for watching! Just a Man is my favorite song so far, so I’m glad you enjoyed my interpretation!
Making + choreographing an animated sequence for a song when creating a musical animatic already takes a crazy ammount of time and effort but for a hypothetical STAGE PLAY with lighting, props and all?! Holy shit dude! Huge props for the dedication, effort n creativity done for all the stage animatics youve done for this musical so far! Wonderful job!
Bonus: When seeing the dummies that are meant to be lotus eaters i pictured them handling puppets similarly to broadway's the lion king n frozen, made the sequence a lot more fun to imagine in an irl production
Everyone else was doing it like an animated movie, but I thought: It's going to eventually be a live production, why not experiment with how that might actually look?
The first time I listened to The Horse and the Infant, that sequence with the wall opening and the crib moving forward was the first thing I could visualize in my mind SO CLEARLY I had to animate it. It wasn't a choice, it had to happen.
Love how at the end it returns to the last line of Open Arms
“You can relax my friend…” *stress*
Thanks for watching it through to the end!
I LOVE THIS
You did a great job!!! those men fighting? and later the winions?? AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE HOW YOU ENDED IT!!! Like how Athena ended quick-thought and the flashing light, and she was gone and the Polites "You can relax my friend"
AMAZING JOB!!!!
Thanks for watching all the way through to the end!! I’m so glad you liked it!!
@@MydnyteRaven Of course! I remember watching it when the warriors were just cubes 😂
It’s been 4 months of work, but totally worth it
My gods. It looks incredible.
Thank you for watching!
This looks awesome! I love the use of shadows to make the gods larger than life
Thank you! I think it gives them an air of mystery 😊
so many people have said this but god this is so cool how you imagined how the stage production would look like!! i cant wait to see more!
Even though many people have said it, I still really like to read it. I put a lot of work into it. Be sure to check out Polyphemus, and I’m actively working on Survive
A M A Z I N G
omg, it's incredible, hope Jay see this
I hope so too! I hope he likes it
I literally teared up while watching this AND it's just the first saga!!! 😭 It felt like I was watching the whole musical live production already AAAA You're so amazing!
Thank you for the kind words! I worked hard on this, and hope to continue with the next saga
This is incredible! I didn't think anyone would do something like this, but that's so amazing! I genuinely am just picturing all of the characters as either their actors or what they look like in other animatics and this is so incredible! There's some real dedication there. May I also just say that I love how you incorporated Warrior of the Mind? Fantastically done. Jay would love this
Thank you so much! Someday I might have models of the actors on the stage, but, for now they’re just color coded. (They are scaled to their appropriate heights tho)
@@MydnyteRaven I hope you do eventually. It would be EPIC (pun intended)
It’s in the works! I have a lot of clean-up work to do to get it to work though. Some of the early poses are especially rough.
This is really amazing! There are some logistics that need to be worked out like some blocking (and especially exits without making it look too abrupt or awkward ) and how certain stage pieces are to be moved.
I’ve been thinking about how this would play out on stage as well. And I have some thoughts and opinions on each song, if it’s ok to share.
The Horse and the Infant: phenomenal. fight scenes can be hard to choreograph without making things look messy and you did amazing keeping the focus on Odysseus.
Just a Man: This is very similar to how I imagined this playing out. Very minimal set pieces with the only piece of furniture being the crib. The main difference would be that at time stamp 08:16:33 (6:05), more of the flood lights turn red so that the stage appears completely washed in it.
Full Speed Ahead: All of your transitions so far have been so smooth. Like butter. Absolutely gorgeous. I love a good transition. The only thing I thought was that there wasn’t much to look at in this scene. Considering there are 600 men but we don’t see any of those men doing any sort of work on the ship. The actors for the men could double as the crew that moves the ship. Maybe the ship could be on a track or wheels with a pulley system to pull it onto and off stage? I’m just spitballing to work out logistics.
Open Arms: God! These transitions are *chef’s kiss*. I love the Lotus Eaters coming out from behind the pillars! There would need to be a way to smoothly bring the pillars on stage without causing too much delay tho. If it becomes too difficult, an alternative could be to layer 4 cardboard tree/forest backdrops (2 further back on the sides and 2 put together further in front so it creates an extra exit/entrance on upstage right and left, and an entrance for the boar from upstage center by pulling the 2 front pieces apart.
Warrior of the Mind: I loved how you used a full black out to get Polites and Odysseus off stage. Regarding getting Athena off stage without her having to awkwardly walk off after coming out of Quick Thought, would be to have the spotlight focused on her but keep the area where Odysseus and Polites are sitting blacked out. Instead of having Athena so up close to and following Odysseus, you could have her continue to downstage left to sing her last lines out towards the audience. This way, she can make a quick exit before the lights come back onto Odysseus and Polites.
I also really like how you gave Polites one last “you can relax, my friend”. It really emphasizes the juxtaposition between the two mindsets at war in Odysseus.
Thank you for the feedback! I’m still learning so much of the staging and animation processes, and any advice is welcome.
Thank you so much for watching!
I hope Jay will see this, looks amazing
I hope so too. I have tagged him in the video’s description so, I hope he will see it soon
this was AMAZING to watch, I've been thinking of how these songs (especially the ones with gods and monsters in them) would play out on stage, I think using shadows for the visions, or what Odysseus would hear them say in his head (?) is genius, kudos to you friend
Thank you my friend! I appreciate you watching!
I would love if the crew were walking around energetically while hes assigning the roles. But I love this staging
Noted for when I’m better at walk cycles
Well this is fucking amazing! I love the scene changes. And how the gods!
I especially love Zeus and the introduction of the prophecy. I haven't been able to visualise how it would be done on stage but your reveal is so perfect!!!
Thank you for the kind words and for watching!
Ikr that part was so cool!!
What ? This is incredible! I can't imagine the work needed to achieve this result. I love the kind of stop motion aspect.
Thank you for the kind words and for watching!
honestly this is an amazing storyboard for future POSSIBLE theatre productions holy shit good job!! :D
Thank you! I tried to keep it feasible, though my budget is "How much can I do before my computer crashes?" so it may be a little over-the-top :)
4:15 im sorry but the infant just being a brick is cracking me up so much
Behold, my rudimentary character modeling skills at work!
I’ve learned a lot since making this, and I do have a baby bean to use for the remake but I lowkey kinda wanna keep it for the giggles
This is incredible! I can tell you put so much effort into this project and the result is definitely worth it!
My favourite touch is the way you introduce the God and Goddess, as we hear their voices we see the large and frightening silhouette before we could see their face, which shows the distance between a God and a man visually.
Thanks for watching! I am really excited about how I introduce the gods. Poseidon will be lots of fun.
this is absolutely amazing and i cannot put into words how impressive this entire video is but the people just zooming onto the screen at 1:31 made me laugh so hard 😭😭
When Odysseus starts telling each person what to do, I’d like to think another spot light shines on the character he is talking about as they get into formation, I dunno I think it’d be cool
I LUV HOW you made zues walk around than a random voice
I think that’d be more fun for the actor as well
Wow this is so cool. I have been wondering what this would look like adapted into a screenplay, this provides a nice idea.
I know they want it on the stage, and that Jay has written a script, but I haven't seen it, so this is just what I had in mind. I hope it helps you!
I would love the first show (if that's his intention) to use the cast that made the EP possible
@@philspence3073 I know that Jay himself wants to perform as Odysseus for at least a little while, but I'm not in that circle to know what's actually planned. There may not actually be plans yet, its still early days.
OH WOW THIS IS NEW I love it! I am going to watch all of the musical through you.
Thank you! As soon as there are more sagas, I hope to add more to the playlist.

Thank you!
You need this to organize a play.
Me for Athena in the stage production, trust. But seriously this is amazing, I would freaking LOVE to see this as a stage show I am praying this happens one day.
the end! Chills. Literal chills. It so cool to see how well versed you are to interpret and reimagine the mythology and obviously the music is a work of art. You really brought this saga to life. With such quality I’m prepared to wait, but I can’t be the only one waiting for the next instalment ❤❤
Thank you for watching all the way to the end!
I’ve had a little help with some of the mythology, but the music does a lot to make the story clear.
I am very excited to share the next piece of this musical.
I hope Jorge sees this. This is incredible
Very well done... I've been looking for this musical in order...I really hope you continue with the cyclops saga
Thank you! I am actively working on the first song right now
I love how Zeus walks around the crib at first, but I personally would have him continue moving, not really looking at Odysseus, because he's (ugh) just so above Odysseus.
In just a man, the baby gets yeeted off the tower
Whaaat! No one’s ever told me that!
@@MydnyteRaven in monster is specified I believed
And I’ve specified in many many other comments exactly why I made the decision that I did regarding the blocking for this scene, and that I have a plan to fix it.
@@MydnyteRaven oh, sorry, I didn't notice!
This video has been up since April 2023, well before the Underworld Saga dropped and it hadn’t been confirmed yet whether or not he actually DID kill the baby and it’s lots of work to change it, so I’ve decided to keep pressing forward rather than go back and redo something I’m genuinely pretty happy with. I will go back and redo Troy and Cyclops with my new models and the new recordings one day, but for now, I was simply being facetious with Luke.

I love the transitions between each song! I always wondered about the transitions between just a man, full speed ahead, and open arms, and you did them so well!
the transitions are some of the most fun to do, because you only get to see them in the full compilations
This is amazing! 🥹🥹
I have a critique, more of a nitpick, but I think in the scene with Zues and the infant Zues shouldn't give Odysseus a dagger. It gives off the vibe that Zues is forcing his hand rather than telling him a hard truth that, if he should choose to not see it through, he will be doomed. Odysseus also already has a sword, so the dagger becomes a bit of a redundant prop.
Another thing that could have been done differently is during the final part during the build to "I'm just a man" Odysseus should be climbing a set of stairs with the soldiers staring up at him and at the end of the final "Forgive me" he would be standing at the top before he drops the "infant" prop right as the lights cut off. One of the soldiers at the bottom would catch the prop in the dark.
I have a plan for the remake
When he says "Penelope" for the fiest time. here should be some sort of thing like a balcony above and have her walk along it like the balcony in hamilton 😊 and the same thing for Zeus when his voice apears
By all means, stage it how you’d like. I currently don’t have a balcony
Uff I already choreographing this whole thing. Love it!
Why is this so good?!?? I love it 😍
Thank you!
Stuff that came to my mind while watching this
0:06 Instead of them jumping after Odysseus I think it would be best that they jump as their names are called and go to the designated positions, just like Teucer did (0:44)
1:08 when he starts talking about Penelope everything else starts to move slowly and when the chorus is back (1:24) they go back to moving normally
I just fell like Odysseus would be sad and go to the corner and as the lotus eaters started talking about the cave he would slowly go back to the center of the stage
14:38 I think It would be nicer if Athena popped up from the other side, showing us the Odysseus didn't actually saw Athena
I love this so much!!! And pls keep in mind that English is not my first language
this definitely deserves more views
it’s gotten lots and lots

I have good news, I can tell you for a fact that he's seen this one
Gods, I can't imagine how much work this was! This level of work and the number of props would certainly be difficult to replicate on the stage, but it would be a dream to see something like this actually made reality.
EDIT: Also, I'm loving the shadows of the gods showing up before they 'manifest' on stage - it definitely makes them feel 'larger than life' and gives them that air of power and influence which Odysseus doesn't get. Also, I love the boar - realistically it would be a person/people in a costume, but it makes me wonder how you'd interpret Polyphemus and the other monsters Ody will encounter through his journey.
EDIT 2: And now I'm realising you've already released the start of the next Saga, my mistake - I'll be watching those now XD
Thank you for watching! I imagine the boar mask would be puppeted by one or two people, but... I'm lazy and didn't want to animate the puppeteer.
I'm glad you liked the gods' shadows. I am particularly proud of that concept :)
This is so underrated
Thank you for finding it!
That must have been a pain to render, especially because of the high quality
I once rendered in high quality and noticed a mistake and ended up taking 6 hours because I had to rerender twice
I am actually using Blender’s real-time renderer Eevee, which resulted in about 2 seconds per frame. I did render it over the course of a couple of days, but in total it only took an hour or two.
The nice thing is that there are settings that you can set where-if you make a mistake- you only need to render those mistake frames. (Happened here, actually, in the first render Odysseus’ sword was completely invisible)
There’s still a lot I would change, but overall, I think it turned out pretty cool.
I would love to render it with cycles, but I think that may actually melt my computer-and it would take about a week
@@MydnyteRaven Yeah I usually render in Eevee when I do an animation because I have an old computer, and this thing starts lagging as soon as I open Blender. Or Firefox. And rendering something in Cycles is...well, as you know really painful. So yeah never did something like this stupid 6 hour render again (it was one single frame)
I feel your pain, my friend. Keep at it though and good luck with all your renders!

Ce serait super un film qui illustrerait ces chansons 😍
There are many incredibly talented artists working to make that happen ☺️ I’m merely one of them
6:18 - WHAT WAS THAT?! Now he did or didn't?!
Anyway, is that offical? There aren't speech?
But this is amazing dude/girl! Amazing!
for 6:18, I left it ambiguous on purpose,
and its not official, its just fan-art and a concept of what I would like it to be. To my knowledge there's no dialogue outside of the songs
In most retellings, the sequence of events is even more chilling: Baby Astyanax is killed by Achilles' son... by being thrown from the walls of the city. I've seen pottery where Neoptolemus even kills Priam (who is praying at the altar of Zeus) by bashing his head in with the baby's corpse.
The idea that a child will grow up and destroy Greece was folded back into the _Aeneid_, where one of the fleeing princes' descendants (the Romans) eventually do come and conquer Greece, adding to the futility, tragedy, and pollution of killing Hector's blood
@@arianedealswithsocialanxie8170 that’s very informative. I didn’t know a lot of that.
I mostly went with the knife concept in Just a Man because I felt it would play better on stage, it’s also symbolic of the knife over Odysseus’ head (or Greece’s head, as it may be) should he fail.
Plus… when I first heard the songs I wasn’t sure he actually killed the kid, so I left it up for interpretation 😝
@@MydnyteRaven I'm just now discovering this music through your work, so thank you for making all this! Wow!
