- This is the pose-by-pose animatic for the Cyclops Saga
Staging the Cyclops was probably the hardest thing I've tackled so far... from modeling the monster to rigging to figuring out how to get that club to land where I wanted it to.
I hope that you enjoy it!
All possible credit to @JayHerrans and his Epic ensemble, who wrote and performed the music.
The thumbnail was inspired by @that.drawer.mircsy.
There is a distinct viewing spike at 5:47. You masochists.
I love how the entire fandom agreed for Polites to have a lil headband (sorry if i got that wrong idk what it's called) in every single animatic that he's in and to have Odysseus place it on his wrist when Polites dies i wonder why but it's adorable and i want one
I agree and yeah, we just call it a headband. One artist did it, then we all went with it.
And yes, Ody’s gonna keep that headband throughout it his adventures, tho as things get a bit more stressful it’ll move to his head.
I am working on learning tablet weaving to make myself one… slow process
@@MydnyteRaven if you are able to make one i BEG you make a tutorial so i can wear it the rest of my life
What I love even more is that everyone agreed "what the heck, rectangular glasses existed in Ancient Greece because Steven is too cute with his"
And most illustrative animatics portray him to resemble Steven himself
@jid_no I do have a design for Polites, he’s just sort of… dead rn, but check out my community posts for a pic of him and Odysseus
So polite of the cyclops to just stand there while they have their little pep talk
I’m glad it’s not just me who was thinking the same thing😂
Jorge Rivera said he was inspired by anime too, guess it shows in these moments 😂
I just picture Athena disappearing via a cleverly placed trap door and the audience going "woooooooo????"
For the cyclops, I know that it will be puppeteered, but with it going up and down is gonna be the hardest. As he still has to get back up and nnmone of it needs to be tangled for it to do so. Including the club part, maybe a flash of red lights will show how much damage it actually really is doing. But the spot light of the cyclops looking over all of them is beautiful! Even if keeping the stage dark, a spotlight into the cave and then showing orange lighting mixed with red to show that the caution and uncertainty about him finding them.
Ngl, this got my theatre kicking in and i've never been so happy to see this planned out so well 😭😭😭
Thank you so much for the kind words! I don't have a lot of practical theater experience so I'm glad this has reached so many theater kids who think its neat.
There was a giant Kong puppet on stage that was 2000lbs.
I don't know if that would be needed nowadays with 3D printing, but still, you can get pretty impressive things with puppets.
I think this video has the cyclops a bit bigger than it actually will be. The cyclops is around 15 feet tall, or around 2 1/2 Odysseus. So it would be a bit smaller and easier to control than the one in this video. They can also always make it a touch smaller (like 10 feet tall) and it would still work out fine.
The club swing is exactly how I imagined it, Odysseus is just frozen and can only watch it happen, as his men are just crushed by it. If anything the Cyclops kept his word, he did say he'd leave Odysseus til last so he takes out the people around him.
I always saw the cyclops as a grey character, like, he came home and some dudes had killed his favourite sheep and planned to steal from his home then had the audacity to say they meant no harm. Like fair enough they tried to hash it out but still, from the big guys pov he's caught you mid robbery and you killed his dog. No wonder Cyclops went all John Wick on them. Then he gets blinded and Odysseus metaphorically slaps him in the face by sparing him, I would have told on him too. My father would definitely be hearing about this.
Epic’s depiction of this event is particularly cruel of Odysseus. In the original, they didn’t kill the favorite sheep, and only blinded him after Polyphemus had eaten six guys pretty much out of the blue, and trapped them in his cave for 3 days.
But this way, they did get some sheep out of it… and I don’t think they’re gonna be worried about food for a while… bigger fish n all.
Nice try, you ain't slick with that last sentence Malfoy.
Thank you. Thank you, THANK you for having Odysseus wrap Polites' headband around his arm! If this ever gets a stage/live action/animated show, they HAVE to include it. I could imagine you could buy a headband before you go into the theater to watch the show, or could bring one with you, and then all of us wrap it around our wrists with him, and all throw our fists in the air and scream "Remember them!" right back at the actor. I WILL find a way to go see this if it ever gets a show.
Cyclops confronted robbers who shot his prized pet and got poisoned, blinded, and robbed making me feel sorry for a monster. Well done.
Tbf, Ody did try to apologise after they found out the sheep belonged to someone, and tried to end things peacefully.
The cyclops was already being threatening from the get go, so Ody tried to sedate the cyclops before things could escalate.
Unfortunately, the lotus took too long to take affect.
We don't really know what the end outcome would have been if his initial plan had worked.
If they would have left with the flock or left it and tried to scour for food someplace else.
The moment Odysseus declared his true identity is one of my favorite moments in any recent musical because it's both an epic moment, musically, but also objectively a bad idea that is guaranteed to kick him in the teeth later on. And it does. In... well, epic fashion.
I read an analysis recently that the genius part of the monologue at the end of Remember Them is that, when he calls out his name, there ISNT any musical backing at all, just this ominous hum and the creaking of the ship. It's not an epic moment at all, but an empty one. The narrative and the music does not support his decision.
In terms of props Atena should definitely be holding a shield and spear and at points where she is emotional vulnerable, she should drop one or both.
noted
Knowing how Epic the Musical is gonna go story wise, the cyclops saga is without a doubt the HARDEST to put on a stage. But you did really well!
Thank you for the kind words! I put a lot of effort into these. There is still Scylla and Charibdis to face, so, we’ll see if this was the hardest.
@@MydnyteRavenCharibdis could maybe be a projection layered over a sculpture?
I have a concept that I’ve been thinking of, we’ll see
@@youraverageshitposter9083how big are these guys anyway?
The plan is: big enough to take up the whole stage
The detail of the stage falling apart in My Goodbye is amazing. That would look so cool in stage.
Thank you, it took a lot of fiddling to get it to go at the right speed and not look INCREDIBLY dangerous
Eurylochus trying to stop Ody from doxxing himself and the hug at the end were such great decisions. One thing I think could be cool is when Athena says “Just a Man,” the soldiers that died to the cyclops can come in as the chorus for a moment, since the gods can summon choruses at will. They get a spotlight for their line then back in the dark
hear me out. a plushie of this version of the cyclops
He’s not too blocky and awful? 😂
@@MydnyteRaven he is perfection
Yay, now I can hug the one who killed my favorite character and made me SOB
Now the question is, will the plushie be blinded?
I think it’s possibly an option
This is so good! Although I do really wonder how aspects such as the club, the cyclops moving, and Athena would be handled in a stage production.
I can't wait for a stage production to actually happen one day and see the BTS of it!
Staging the cyclops is possibly the most challenging thing I’ve had to tackle. I do wonder what sorts of ideas the official team has on some of this.
One thing I’d inside is they use some kinda shadow and light effect to give a huge silhouette the feel of the cyclops. They could use some costuming to give the cyclops a physical effect and use lighting to contrast when the prop is being used to when it’s being “animated” by shadows.
I’ve been using shadows for the gods
Personally I was imagining it much more abstract than you’ve shown; an eye and maybe a club being the only props to physically enter the stage. In my experience, plays often leave more complicated sequences like these to the imagination / suggestion of the audience; think the sequence in Hadestown where Orpheus sneaks into the underworld. It’s less important to actually show the sequence than it is to convey the feeling of it.
Of course a part of why I thought this was because I wanted the cyclops to feel enormous, like, wouldn’t-fit-on-the-stage kind of size. This is more of a personal preference, though.
The trickiest thing with this (and I think in any production actually) would be getting the right feel for the club; I was thinking relying mostly on lighting to convey the impact, maybe even to the point of only introducing the actual prop when Remember Them starts.
@TheBasikShow interesting. I might think about this concept a little on the redo. (The new theater doesn’t have any walls for the Cyclops to hang on)
I first saw this when my teacher showed it to the class and ever since I was addicted to this video
My video?? Your teacher showed MY video??
Yeah she was explaining Greek mythology and found a animatic video and played it and it was your video
oh wow! I’m so flattered. There are so many amazing artists out there doing animatics of EPIC, like wolfythewitch, mircsy and Gigi, just to name a few, I highly recommend checking them out!
But I like yours the best.
That makes my heart really happy🥰
Impressive, the direct interactions between mechanism and people/props would be really difficult (picking up the wine, using the club, etc.)
It was a *Struggle* getting all the props to interact properly in blender.
For the “real” thing I was thinking magnets and both objects would actually be *extremely* lightweight, almost made of paper kind of lightweight.
That is so good! Love the idea of the big cyclops in the back. If I did it however, I would try to make Odysseus stand towards the audience somehow. You loose a lot connection to the characters when they are looking away from you especially in a conversation like this. Not that it's not possible ofc, this take on the scene is simply fantastic. Well done!
Thank you for the feedback!
I was looking for this comment! One way to get around this is to have the audience see Ody's side profile when he's adressing the cyclops, but also position Ody's men more towards the audience so that he is facing the audience when he interacts with the men (e.g. shared looks while the cyclops is talking, gesturing to bring the wine, "look out!").
Btw this is an amazing video and I loved so much about it! I especially loved Polyphemus's gaze being shown with the spotlight - gave me shivers!
@Tan-whippie I do plan on turning Ody around for the redo with the remastered Saga, it’s just gonna take a little time to get there, thank you for your advice!
This is a masterpiece! I hope this is what it will look like in the actual musical.
That’s really flattering, I do wonder if/hope that they might take some of my ideas
Mostly practical, the biggest difficulty would be the Cyclops. The spotlight head would be the best option, but the weight of it would make it difficult to move. I am not an engineer, but I think you can see where I am coming from. Obviously, someone smarter can solve this while keeping both simple enough to avoid accidents and not be a financial burden.
i could see them using shadows to do the cyclops or a projector, it allows for more movement
@@danyul8578 a projection would allow for more movement, but, 2 things: I know that Jay, the creator of EPIC wants some kind of armature/set piece for the monsters, to make them more solid and intimidating and 2: My computer isn't quite beefy enough to do projections of any sort. (My OG plan had projections of ground textures on the stage, and while I have set up a projection system in the file (available on my Patreon), I can't render it with any sort of fidelity)
It's a shame this doesn't have more views. Loved your first one and instantly clicked on this. Completely drawn in for 14mins. Ocean and Circe Saga need to com out just so we get more of this!
Thank you for the kind words! I’m so glad you like my work!
Circle saga? You mean Circe Saga?
that would be the autocorrect coming to bite us all
@@MydnyteRaven damn autocorrect the curse of us all I blame Zeus
Wow this is amazing. I think that during Remember Them, there should be more Cyclopes heads opening their eyes one at a time to emphasize how bad the story could have been for Odysseus and his men. Additionally, I think it would be nice if we saw Polyphemus smile while Odysseus sails away like Jay said, so that perceptive members could recognize that Polyphemus isn’t done with Odysseus.
I have no right to be saying this and critiquing something I can’t begin to construct myself, but great work! I’ve always wanted to see this visualized ever since I heard the album, and you have done an amazing job!
Thank you for your kind words and your suggestions. I will keep them in mind for when I do the remake!
10:00 I was wondering how you were going to transition from the cave to the ship, and I think that this is a really cool way to do it! It just feels like such a Broadway thing to do and still looks great!
apparently i fumbled hard and never subscribed after seeing your block out horse and the infant, so imagine my surprise that i come across the FULL SAGAS in video here! love the effect of the cyclops's eye being a spotlight. once again, this is excellent with such basic models- you intrinsically understand a production animatic, doing what's necessary to communicate timing, basic lighting, and prop placement. the little red headband pointing out polites is such a charming little thing! my only critique is that maybe "less is more" would have been better for the cyclops, both from stylistic constraints and thinking from a stage production perspective. reducing him to only a visible eye would remove the need to block out the cyclops, remove the possible safety issue of a large club prop, and the question of what he's doing when the other actors are singing. that's my only real thought, and it doesn't hinder my enjoyment of what you've done at all. an animatic is for visualizing, so pretty much everything i'm saying would only be considered in a later production stage.
on a side note, i internally imagined the sheep as lion king broadway style puppets lmao
I also imagine the sheep as lion king style puppets.
I am working to redo these with human models and some changes to the set in which I am gonna be taking everybody’s feedback into consideration especially about the cyclops
From the words of thorfinn, "you have no enemies".
That’s reassuring
i gotta say, i ADORE how this looks like its meant to be a stage production of the songs and not just an animatic within the universe itself
this looks so fun i love every second of this, but having it look like a stage play is GENIUS
Thanks! I keep being tempted to try something more cinematic and comments like this help keep me motivated to stay on this course
broo just realized there was a little violin moment in the begining that sounded like “Captain! Captain!”
That is the “Danger” motif 😊it repeats often through the music
Im picturing this like they did DreamWorks movies for a bit like Prince of Egypt and Treasure Planet
The dreamworks style would really suit EPIC
I absolutely adore the effort put into this, and i cannot imagine how long it took. I think honestly having a more minimalist approach to the cyclops would also be cool. Something like just a terrifying eye and arms from above the stage, and have the actors still face forwards. That, or have like many puppeteers (ha) come on with separate parts that combine to appear as a cyclops, similar build to like the hyenas from lion king, but combined.
The character acting of Eurylochus and Polites during Polyphemus-- you are a master at work
AND POLITES PUSHING ODYSSEUS OUT OF THE WAY??? MIRRORING THE BOAR FROM THEIR CHILDHOOD?????
Polites pushing Odysseus out of the way of the cyclops????? Mirroring the boar from their childhood??????? Hello?????????? /vvpos
And Eurylochus hanging his head after Ody says his name........
THE HUG I'M GONNA DIE
The cyclops saga was all about background stories. The set doesn’t change over the course of 3 songs, so I took the time to try to work in background stuff about the crew and especially Eurylochus and Polites. These are Ody’s closest friends, they’re his brothers, and I wanted to showcase that.
You know I worked on a few small musicals. I wonder if they'll make a cyclops puppet and hook it to a flight rope rig. Move the arms, and the head since the system I used had up down left and right movement. Spotlight for the eye placement for audiance ease.
that’s fascinating, i’d love to hear more
That is incredibly well made and insanely good, bravo. There’s clearly a lot of effort and time in it, all the details and ideas where great, I loved the acting and the messages within the stage and the figures and how they behaved, and overall an incredible masterpiece, I love it
Thank you for watching and for the kind words!
This is amazing! Somebody needs to ping Jay and share him these!
I did manage to share a preview of this one with him 😊
@@MydnyteRaven did he like it?
@@alakazamlover4908 He did! He said it was cool, and called me a bada** so… that was a win!

I’ll admit to having not heard the whole thing.. I’m waiting impatiently for the saga to drop (mostly cuz I know if I listen to the snippets I will animate them and then I wont want to fix it to make the transitions smooth! which is what makes my saga videos so satisfying (to me anyway))
So many fantastic little touches, this is brilliant!

This is really good, it's like those puppet in the movie, i hope more people's see this
I love this! My only criticism is that the actors should face the audience, otherwise you lose that connection when you can't see their faces or expressions.
Yes I plan on correcting that for when they actually have faces
Yo I saw someone recommend that when an important character dies, Hermes be the one to carry them away because he guides souls to the underworld so maybe you could include that?
That’s a neat concept

Oop bye Polites
oop
did you intentionally have Ody cross himself when taking Polites' headband at about 7:42? or was that an accident?
Cross himself like the catholic hand motion? Or was he clipping onto himself? Or is it a theater term that I’m not super familiar with?
I intended him to be holding the headband to his heart, one final moment of sentimentality before he goes all battle-mode again
@@MydnyteRaven yes, the Catholic hand motion is what I meant
