- Lisa Gade reviews the HP ZBook 17 G6, a very powerful 17.3” desktop replacement size mobile workstation with optional Dream Color wide gamut 4K display and up to an Intel Core i9-9880H or Xeon E2286M 8-core CPU. The MIL STD ZBook 17 is available with NVIDIA Quadro RTX 3000/4000/5000 graphics or AMD Radeon Pro W5500 dedicated graphics. It has 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports, easy access internals with several M.2 SSD bays, a 2.5” bay and tool-less 95.6 WHr battery removal. And yes, it even has a Blu-ray drive.

This thing's a beast. I'm amazed that you can just take the battery out and swap it with no tools.
Then again - that was a standard feature on laptops fifteen years ago.

@Sebaka & Co. A bit of extra thickness is fine as long as it's not too heavy, which this doesn't seem to be.
I love mine! You can carry it in a backpack, with no problem.
Might be an HP thing, my basic HP laptop has that feature.

Considering that you likely open a laptop 1-2 times a year, this is more of a security liability than useful feature especially as you can't properly clean fans without using screwdriver anyway. So, you got a laptop that still requires use a screwdriver to clean cooling, yet at the same time allows stealing memory module from your laptop without the need for any tool and without you even knowing that it happened as it can be done so fast in laptop lacking the need to remove screws for access and the fact that computer can run on single module too, thus you may not even notice theft long after... Perhaps this has value for people that would want lug around spare batteries for some field engineering in places without electricity without the need to use field generator or abusing car's engine just for laptop charging by using a portable solar panel that charges the battery while you using spare in your laptop, but that's a feature for likely less than 100 mobile workstation users around the world...
Personally, I would add few screws and made fast bottom cover takedown optional after removing screws, not something that is the only option, as you can't really leave such laptop around strangers even for a moment as you may like to do when living in shared college housing regardless of using Kensington lock to make outright stealing of the whole laptop harder.
I spent more than a year researching different mobile workstation and gaming laptops before settling on a ZBook 17 G4 with Xeon CPU and Quadro GPU. Best equipment decision I ever made. It runs all my Adobe and Autodesk programs without issue. Even though I plan to run my G4 for at least another year maybe two I am certain that my next machine will also be from the ZBook line.
By the way, one of the criteria was that the laptop had to fit inside a Pelican 1495 case. Not going to spend that kind of money on a machine any then stick it in a soft sided messenger bag. The ZBook was the only one of the units that not only fit the case but allowed space for it's power supply, an external ssd (backup), my 3d mouse and trackball. It was also more than 3 pounds lighter than the other candidates.
Thanks for this as reviews of hp zbook are rare! A beast of a machine built to last. The tool-less bottom is awesome. I wish zbook weren't much more expensive than comparable Dell and Lenovo offerings which often get discounts
I'm a sales and marketing specialist for an IT company, InfoSys Associates, and I can attest to this review. Absolutely a phenomenal machine. Spreadsheets, virtual meetings, video editing, I use it for everything.
Got mine this week. Sails through Davinci Resolve. Annihilates anything I've ever had.

Great review but I see that HP are not moving with the "design" times, it's a powerful machine and I appreciate that it's aimed more at workstation users but the screen bezel is huge, surely they could either have increased the screeen size or reduced the overall size of the machine?
There is definitely something to be said for old school notebook design like this - easy disassembly, removable battery, upgradable memory/storage and the ability to get to and clean those fans. Professionals understand this all too well.
I'm all for performance too, but I think another good approach would be to offer this with consumer Core i9/i7 and RTX graphics for folks who don't specifically need the perks of a Xeon and Quadro. Brand it the Omen Ultra. HP are you listening???

I’m attending Full Sail University for the Online Game Design Program and this is the laptop they give us in our launch box and it’s definitely a beast.

Thanks for reviewing the ZBook 17 G6. I thought HP advertused the G6 Dreamcolor screen as being able to cover 100% DCI-P3 AND 100% AdobeRBG but you showed it covered 91% DCI-P3 which just like my ZBook 17 G5 Dreamcolor screen?

As usual, the comprehensive and state-of-the art review that we expect from Lisa. BTW, Lisa you can act any age you want. You are always so much fun to watch and learn from.
Impressive system. I built a similarly specced desktop PC in 2015, for a bit less money. Since it is in a PC case it is about 9 times taller and like 13 times in volume. Got to love technology.
Two things I would change, make it so the full bottom part is easily accessible, those fans must be losing performance having that thick piece of plastic over them.
Also, make it look (thicker of course) than the other HP laptop...Specter or something. The one with the gold lines.

Menawhile, Apple figure out how to make their "Pro" laptop 1.5 mm thinner and remove a port or two in the process.
While not a big fan of Apple laptops, you can buy two low-end Apple laptops for the price of single low-end ZBook 17, Apple is for people in need for portability and longer battery life, you can't have it all, at least not for a reasonable price...
If you comparing with 17" Dell Precision line or Lenovo mobile workstations, on the other hand, you got some serious competition for Zbook at reasonable prices, though included optical drive and decent repro in Zbook 17 G6 will still be essential for some users using discs on a daily basis wanting complete package laptop with decent repro for presentations and content consumption making Zbook 17 G6 only plausible choice for such buyers of well build premium mobile workstations...
@UCZ2DG0lKynu6klsAA-_peEQ They are not in direct competition, no (actually Apple has nothing at all for these users), but it was more a simple complaint at Apple for not concentrating on making a powerful MBP, a slim MB and a cheap MBA but instead make a slim MBP, a slim MB and a slim MBA.
How many were using the 2015 MBP and saying "this pro model is too thick - I wish they nuked most ports and made key travel moronically short so it could be thinner?
@ How many people wanted iPhone or Tesla cars before they were introduced? Customers don't know what they really want because most of the customers did not understand the tech in the first place to make a good list of upcoming features they want in a next-generation product, they are good at telling manufacturer what did not work well and how it can be improved, but your average customers will hardly tell you where next mainstream car or laptop design should be heading. As Apple sells a lot of laptops, they likely know better than you and me what a large portion of customers actually want... Good keyboard travel, plenty of ports, or inclusion of optical drive may be interesting for tech enthusiasts like you and me that know what they want and why they want it, but for the average customer using only a very limited part of laptop's full potential, it's a worthy trade-off for something that is easier to use and easier to carry...
@@IonorReasSpamGenerator I see your point, but can't help thinking that the 2016 and onwards MBP were selling well based on earlier reputation. The butterfly switches was a flawed concept and as their inability to make the keyboards not break down through three (four?) iterations was beginning to hurt them which is why they reverted back to the normal design for the new 16". When people spend $3k on a laptop they will be very disappointed when the keyboard won't work.
As for them removing ports, sure the USB-C w/ TB is the future, but when the first MB with a single USB-C came out, the USB-A wasn't obsolete. It was still around when the next generation MB came out so why couldn't they make the life of the users a little easier for a generation extra?
I know I am happy my Matebook X Pro has an A-port along the two C-ports everytime I need to connect a USB-stick or need to connect a cable to charge a phone from it. Most people still use USB-A cables to charge their phones, you know.

I bought it in Bangladesh From A Recondition market in 2023 and it has been 10 months still no issue i am surprised it can smoothly run my All Adobe App's And Still Can Play most Of Heavy Games. i just came Here to watch peoples comment At That Time .

Great review as always, and I love to see reviews of these not-exactly-consumer devices too! We have several of the previous generation smaller models - zBook 15 G5 - for work. We maxed them out with i9s, 3x 1TB SSDs and 128GB RAM and we run tons of virtual machines on them with excellent results! Of course, we got the 6-core i9s, and by the time the order had made it through our corporate systems, wouldn't you know it, the machines had been refreshed with the 9th gen 8-core i9s!! Aaargh! :-) Regardless, they're great machines.

Man - I miss being able to switch out batteries on the fly. My old Dell work laptops had that - I always ordered another battery so I could quickly swap out and leave my charger at home. I was thinking of doing that with my XPS 15 but there's just too many screws!
@TheGoat I do that with a 60w power bank. It's really good for today's laptops. But theres always loss when you charge due to heat, even when keeping it DC. That means more battery is needed in the power bank so it's more weight. it takes a while to change. A battery change is instant and you aren't thethered

Why do workstations have such big bezels? You get the power but the looks only go to the slimmer models?
I'm impressed. Seems to have fewer caveats than a TP P73. And I've been dismissive of HP largely due to their corporate incompetence of late (well, last 2 decades). Their HW is still worth considering!
Rmb seeing a zbook at work years ago, a single stick of 32gb ram and a 6gb quadro gpu. Never knew technology for laptop came that far.

As people have said, this thing is a beast. I have installed a couple of the G5 15 and 17 models. These things are LARGE. Mose of the ones I have installed for "power users" in the finance sector mainly wanted the 17" screen and the slightly larger keyboard. That said, I would recommend the ZBook 15 for every day use if you are getting an i7. The problem this laptop has is weight. As a desktop replacement, it requires the Thunderbolt + power dock. (Dell does it better by just using 2x TB full power ports to deliver power and data instead of 1 data only TB port and 1 regular power adapter). Overall, a good laptop that people who both have a corporate purchasing program AND would need the specs one of these offer. For me, these are priced too high and I'll stick to a Lenovo or a Dell.

Great review. teh power brick seems small, I missed those thinkpad ones in which, and I quote, "you can kill a rat with the powercord". I am surprised they could power the RTX 5000 with that brick.
Could be using Gallium Nitride ICs which have massively shrunk down PSU sizes. A traditional Silicon based PSU could not power that monster hardware.

We have a G5 at my office and lemme tell ya; if you buy one of these you should absolutely make sure you get them with at least a baseline level of RAM and SSD space, as upgrading the internal SSD and RAM modules requires removal of the system board. I'm not sure if this design persists in the G6 but buyer beware that while this is a powerful laptop with a bunch of upgradeability for those with money to spend you should absolutely make sure to do some research into what parts are compatible. That is of course unless you have the budget to get a tech from HP to do the upgrade for you.

How is HP compared to Dell in terms of reliability?
In the high end sector, HP and Lenovo usually exceed Dell. Dell's XPS and Precision line has a lot of widespread quality issues that just aren't very common the HP and Lenovo's Pro machines. In the lower end, they're about equal. I personally know people with high end and low end Dell machines. The ones who have the Inspiron laptops are more satisfied and have them longer than the ones who have/had an XPS.
I'm getting one for my game development class from full sail University but they didn't give me the specs yet but I'm drooling over this.

Really great review - an amazing amount of detail thank you. Please - Can we have your excellent eyes look at an comments on the newer ZBook 17 G7 Fury model? I am very curious to see what is different from the G6 apart model from smaller bezels - I want to buy one or the other - i.e. which is better - G6 or G7?
In a couple of years when these start showing up in the renewed/refurbished/off lease market I'll be tempted to spring for one. Just wish there was an option for an Nvidia non-Quadro graphics card.

Hello Lisa, I really like your reviews. I have a question, if you could have the zbook 17 g6 or the zbook 15 x360 g5 touchscreen, both fully loaded, which would you prefer? I haven't seen the 17 as x360 or touchscreen. Is the 360 a big thing? I mainly want it for autocadd but for fun i like making videos when I play paintball. So far I do all my video editing on my note 9 and they come out amazing. I would personally like to know which of this 2 laptops you liked the most. Is the 17 g6 something for "on the go?" Is the 15 as great as the 17 as a workstation? Thank you for your time in advance.

I really wish someone would make a laptop with a Xeon E for ECC memory, a mid-level discrete graphics to support high res external display but otherwise not gaming performance, and an NVMe SDD. I think all this could be done in the low-mid $2K base. Not having ECC memory is just stupid for anyone doing real work. Sure, Intel charges extra for Xeon E + chipset, but that's no reason to go overboard on other features.
@@Andrea-Zerg : right, if an OEM build high-end business systems (not gold bricked workstations) substituting the Xeon E and ECC memory for the comparable Core/non-ECC, it would cost about $100 extra. When I build desktops from components, I might be spending $200 over a Core system built from components, and perhaps $300 more than an OEM pre-built system.
The problem is in laptops, in which Xeon E is only available with over-the-top gold bricked workstations. I am typically seeing $4K when $2.5K of components would meet my requirements (high res but not extreme performance graphics)

Yes the Dreamcolor screen is 10 bit (8 bit + FRC).

Hey, I've got question. I cannot decide between buying the HP Elite-book x360 1030 G3 (700 nits FHD display) with an core i7 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD or the Surface Laptop (gen 1) with an i7 (+ Intel plus graphics 640) 16 GB RAM and 512 GB. They both go for 999 Euros. IO is not that important for me (i don't need USB C Thunderbolt) as I only use USB A of which both only have one. So that's a tie for me. And the 360º hinge is nice but i wouldn't use it at all as i don't use the pen. (I'm a student). Plus, I love the color burgundy and in general the surface laptop design (much more than the one on the hp). The surface Laptop has my favorite keyboard in any Laptop. I'd also like to play small games form time to time (e.g. Minecraft), but i think both are good enough when it comes to something like this, right?
My zbook 15 is so much sleeker. But just internal graphics

I have two HP Zbook G6 notebook with a dvd-blu ray player. With the loud volume the speakers distort with some sounds and songs, the dvd player is noisy. It's normal?

HP Z line is as good as expected. But these days, intel... well. I would wait for Ryzen 4000 series or look somewhere else.
@TheGoat That is a problem. Tough it reminds me of those old times when Intel created all sort of obstacles to their competitors. One may remember the chipset issues, the MB shortages and now these VMware and their "uncommon" licensing conditions. Time will tell how this story unfolds. But new computer power creates new software approaches.

Quick question for anyone out there . . . third year architecture student looking for a new laptop, since this one is tailored (in price and features) for professionals, can anyone make a recommendation on any other laptops - workstations or not - that would be more suitable for a college student? I work mostly with Autodesk applications as well as 3D modeling in Rhinocerous and rendering in Vray. I appreciate any help!

I worried about that, but got used to it in a day.
I've been a long time viewer of Lisa's reviews but the phrase serious content creation is becoming cliched and tiresome. A vast majority of DCC and CAD applications don't require ISV certification to function flawlessly and to be honest i have no idea if it even makes a difference in GIS or medical visualization. I'm also astounded by the fact that they have decided to add a 2.5 inch bay and an optical storage drive in 2020.
I'm saddened when computer manufacturers launch products which detract from a positive and fluid user experience. This laptop would have been a great design in 2009-2010 not in 2020
